Jamaica-Southeast Queens Healthy Start is a program that connects pregnant and parenting mother with children under two years old to a variety of resources. Healthy Start is affiliated with three free home visiting programs, which is selectively tailored to the mother’s needs. The three visiting home are Healthy Family, Nurse—Family Partnership, and Queens Comprehensive Perinatal Council. Healthy Start has prenatal educational courses that teach parents ways to adapt to the newborn and how to facilitate the relationship with the rest of the family. In addition, this program also educates pregnant mothers on what to expect in labor and delivery, how to breastfeed the newborns, and assess the mental health of the mothers. This program connects the mothers to job training and employment services, food supplies, and medical care for the mother and the family. Healthy Start also has a “Mom’s Club,” which focus on having a healthy pregnancy, educating on the labor and delivery process, breastfeeding and nutrition for the mother and newborn, adjustment of roles, and planning for the family. …show more content…

This underserved community has many problems such as preterm birth, teen pregnancy, low use of breastfeeding, and high rate of maternal mortality. Preterm birth is highly prevalent in the community, with 15.5% higher than the Healthy People goal of 11.4%. In addition, teen pregnancy is another concern in the community with being the highest in the Queens, New York City and New York State rate. Queens also has the lowest level of breastfeeding compare to other areas in the New York City. Maternal mortality is three times higher in African American in the NYC area than those of other races.
