My Healthiest Relative
How health is defined differs from person to person, what is healthy and what is not is subjective. Some people say that a healthy person would live the longest or a person is only healthy if he/she is physically very strong and active. Some might even say a person is only healthy if that person is mentally strong. In my opinion, health cannot be defined in one word. Although my seventy-six year old grandfather would not be considered stereotypically healthy, he is a perfect example of what I consider healthy.
My grandfather has many health conditions that he needs medicine for. He has diabetes, hypertension, and he used to have high cholesterol levels and he also takes Aspirin for blood thinning. He has been managing his symptoms of diabetes and his glucose levels have been in control as well. Although he has all these conditions, I still consider him the healthiest person as I have myself seen him self-controlling and working
Every day he likes to go to a park within 2 miles of our house. He walks and sometimes even jogs there. He also does a little bit of yoga, which helps him stretch out his body. In Being Mortal, Gawande writes “Whenever I came home, I’d bring my tennis rackets and we’d go out on the local courts. He played to win, and so did I” (Gawande 194). Gawande’s father is very active and loves to play tennis just like my grandfather loves exercising. He also does some laughing exercises at the park, there his friends have made a laughing club where they do some laughing exercises as well as some Yoga. His physician told him that walking around every day actually decreases the rate of a heart attack by a lot, and since then he has been walking every single that to keep his body healthy. His doctor also explained that exercise is a good stress reliever, so it also keeps the mind healthy. He takes his physical and mental as well as his emotional health very
Pate et al. (1995) stated that physical activity is needed for health promotion and disease prevention. They also stated that every adult should do at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise everyday if possible. Moderate intensity exercising includes activities such as brisk walking and cycling as stated by the Department of Health (2011). They also state that regular physical activity will improve a person’s mental health as it will increase self esteem and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Physical wellbeing is also enhanced by an increase in physical activity. The World Health Organisation (WHO) (2002) found that in developed countries 20% of heart disease and 10% of strokes are due to physical inactivity. Furthermore a lack of physical activity is found to cause 3% of all diseases.
Currently, LG takes medication for high cholesterol. She has been informed this is likely genetically inherited from her father and cannot be controlled with just diet and/or exercise. She goes yearly to her primary physician to manage this condition. She has one sibling with bipolar disorder and the other two do not have any medical problems. Her oldest brother and his family provided most of the hands-on care for their father a few years before he died and this has helped LG, her siblings, and all of the family members be more vigilant about staying healthy, eating well, exercising, and getting regular medical checkups. LG stated that her family stays well educated regarding their health and family history and if they have any questions about the genetic problems in the family, they will typically research the internet and follow up with their general
Health is described as “the general condition of the body or mind, especially in terms of the presence or absence of illness or impairments.” Health can also be defined as “the overall condition of something in terms of soundness, vitality and proper functioning” (Oxford, 263). From the definitions of health given, one can either be in good health or in unhealthy.
Being healthy is one of the most important Be Your Best Self aspects because it encompasses so much of our day-to-day lives. To be described as healthy, I not only have to be physically fit, but also mentally, socially, and financially fit. Being healthy has many benefits. Exercise allows a person to be a happier, calm, energized, and confident individual. The same can be said for exercising the brain, socializing, and keeping finances in order. By being healthy I will feel better every day and find fierce determination and discipline in the process.
Healthy diet, according to “CDC-Dietary guidelines for Americans 2010, diet which emphasizes eating foods rich in fiber, potassium, vitamin-D, calcium such as beans, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts and low fat milk and milk products, and also Low in saturated fats, cholesterol, trans-fat, salt and added sugars, within a day calorie need”. This also requires the person to be socially and economically productive in order to be seen as healthy. According to Mildred Blaxter (1990), there are different ways of defining health. Furthermore, disease can be seen as the presence of an abnormality in part of the body or where there is a harmful physical change in the body such as broken bones. So, illness is the physical state of disease, that is to say, the symptoms that a person feels because of the disease. However, there is some limitation of these definitions which is not merely an absence of disease but a state of physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) came up with the most commonly used definition for health, which has not changed for over 60 years. They say that it is ‘’a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’’ (WHO, 1948), therefore meaning there are many more things to consider with health other than just death rates.
What does it mean to be healthy? Health is a state of complete physical , mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease, illness or infirmity. It is important to distinguish between disease and health. Disease is the prognosis of a particular disorder with a specific cause and characteristic symptoms. On the other hand, illness is the existence of disease
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
I think a mentally healthy community would be filled with an abundance of resources and opportunities for everyone in need of assistance. Having accessibility to therapists, crisis lines, social services, physical therapy, correctional facilities, affordable health care, affordable housing, and mental hospitals would be a good step towards a mentally healthy community.

Health is described as physical and mental well-being and freedom from disease, pain or defect. However, such descriptions only superficially define the actual meaning of health. There may be many occasions when individuals are not necessarily ill or in pain but may be overweight, stressed or emotionally unstable. Health is a quality of life involving dynamic interaction and interdependence among the individual’s physical state, their mental and emotional reactions, and the social context in which the individual exists. There are many factors that influence your health, but three major components contribute to general well-being: Self-awareness, a balanced diet and, regular physical activity.
What is wellness and why is it important in my life? Wellness can be broadly described as the culmination of actively making multiple choices that will lead oneself to a happier and healthier life. Other effects that exercise has into the body are normalization of glucose, insulin and leptin levels. In other words not only will it make the appearance in a person’s life to look great, but their entire body will have an extraordinary response. Any individual that leads a healthy lifestyle will say that healthy living is more than just a fad or goal, it’s a way of life. Changing certain aspects of one’s current lifestyle to become healthier is not the final goal, rather, the objective of setting these short and long term goals is maintenance. I decided on this change because I feel that setting a smaller goal that I could easily monitor and execute will expedite future changes to my lifestyle,
