As a volunteer at the Washington Hospital for over four years in the lobby desk and emergency departments, I have learned to advocate for patient needs and to go the extra mile for both patients and hospital workers who ask for my assistance. In addition, I am a Mandarin Labor Coach with the Asian Health Services, functioning to guide my patients through the labor process and facilitate communication between my patients and the healthcare professionals assisting them in labor. Through these programs, I began to understand the great barrier that language presents for many patients in a healthcare environment, and even more so to those who are economically disadvantaged. I want to use my time in college to explore various health-related careers before making a final decision on which path I should pursue. Thus, this program will provide the invaluable clinical or research related experience I need to help me evaluate my future plans. As a labor coach partnered with Asian Health Services of Oakland, I am very interested in the health disparities that immigrant populations frequently suffer from due to language barriers and economical difficulties. I am sure that this internship would offer me much more knowledge and assistance in interaction with more communities experiencing health disparities. This program will push me to constantly learn, facilitate the development of professional skills for my future in healthcare, assist me in overcoming challenges through the guidance of mentors, and generate experiences which I can apply to both my career objectives and my daly life. I want to be part of a program that fans the flames of my passions and helps me utilize it to enrich both my own life and the lives of others. Not only does the public health approach seek to eliminate disparities through increasing the quality of healthcare in disadvantaged communities, but it also focuses on promoting general health and disease prevention, which directly addresses the root of many health problems. A public health approach is preventive and comprehensive in eliminating health disparities, which is more open-minded and considerate to many of those communities and individuals whom it seeks to assist. By determining possible causes or risks in communities experiencing certain health problems, this approach thus facilitates the processes for preventing and amending these problems through various strategies, one of which is health
