In the Health Scholar Program, I will dedicate not only my time but my goal of becoming a part of the healthcare system throughout the time of service. Helping patients is my first priority as a Health Scholar. However, if I, and other health professionals, have available time I’m also looking forward to participating in various fields of medicine as a Health Scholar.
As a prospective healthcare worker, I will utilize my time in the hospital to learn proper ways of assisting patients, both for their physical and emotional needs. Before having direct contact with patients, the 30-hour training before the start of the program is essential for us to become better caretakers. To ensure I grasp the correct and appropriate concepts of how does the hospital function and how can I help out both patient and the medical team, a careful and a highly concentrated mind are needed during the training. Training is not the only time where we receive information about the field and the how-to’s, but the conversations we have with anyone in the hospital all serves as an educational opportunity for me to learn more about the system.

Sometimes it will not be the patients who need help, but the nurses and health staffs as well. Though it may be as trivial as delivering some napkins and towels or reporting verbal messages to other health staffs, each request is important for improving the working efficiency and better patient experience. Thus, I will always be ready and be respectful, ask, listen, solve and respond to any questions or problems I encounter during my service in the
If I can turn back in time, I would advise my young self to join the Kaiser Permanente volunteering program sooner and to skip the small conversations in meetings. Those talks may seem necessary for the first few times, but this communication method can become meaningless since people do not interact on a personal level. Joining the program had supported me by allowing me to associate with various friends through teamwork and encouraged me to thrive beyond my comfort zone.
D1: I have decided to look at a 6 year old going through bereavement. Bereavement means to lose an individual very close to you. When children go through bereavement they are most likely to feel sad and upset about the person’s death. Children at a young age may not understand when a family member dies. Children may not understand bereavement. For example a 6 year old’s father been in a car crash and has died from that incident. Death is unpredictable and children can’t be prepared for a death of a family member as no one knows when someone is going to die or not. Unfortunately every child can experience bereavement even when a pet dies. It is important that we are aware that effects on the child so we can support them in the aftermath.
The AMGEN Summer Scholars research experience will contribute to my plans to become a M.D./Ph.D. candidate, and ultimately an Oncologist, by helping me develop critical and independent thinking as well as creative skills as they relate to the field of medicine. It will also help me develop a more thorough understanding of biological concepts, how they directly apply to medical treatment, and the ways in which biotechnology fuses multiple fields of science to create technologies to care for others. The opportunity to assist in creation of the technologies that will be used on my future patients will ultimately improve my ability to treat their illnesses in adaptive ways. The opportunity I would have to read, interpret, and be a part of creating
Scholarship, leadership, character, and service are four attributes that define an excellent student. Being in high school, it’s difficult at times to be a leader, show your character, and be involved with voluntary services while being focused on scholarship, but I have managed to do all four numerous times. I am so grateful and excited to have the chance to be a part of the National Honors Society.
For undergraduate students looking to pursue a career in medicine, medical school can be a daunting financial endeavor. The Health Professions Scholarship Program is a military scholarship offered by the Army, Navy, and Air Force that covers all tuition and fees for one to four years at any accredited medical school or other qualifying professional program. The scholarship also gives the student a stipend for living expenses. In return for the aide, students incur an obligation to the military; students must serve one year of active duty and one year of Inactive Ready Reserve for each year they receive the scholarship. In order to be a good nurse, I need to always understand that I am part of a team to help those in need. Born and raised by parents working in the medical field, I have always had the urge to follow up on on a health related career. I am presently studying for my A-levels at St.Aloysius Sixth form in Malta, a college for high achievers.
Scholarship is a concept that can mean many different things to many different people. As nursing students, scholarship is a concept that we began developing before we started our formal nursing education, will continue to hone during nursing school, and will utilize every day as professional nurses. Scholarship is not something that comes from a singular source, but rather something that is the product of many different experiences, ideas, and types of knowledge. For nurses, it is the synthesis of knowledge from liberal education, knowledge from a variety of disciplines, and the integration of ways of knowing and thinking in nursing that promote scholarship, which in turn leads to the promotion of safe, quality patient care.
Nursing is a science and an art (Appleton, 1993). To become a nurse one must gain scientific knowledge and understanding of the human body in order to care for their patients; this is done in the classroom. Clinical settings allow this learning to happen as one gets to experience how important a caring partnership between the patient and nurse is (Finfgeld-Connentt, 2008). A nurse needs to have the ability to skillfully and morally take a course of action to care for their patient, while intertwining a sensitive and intimate connection with them (Finfgeld-Connett, 2008). When this is achieved both the patient and nurse will feel

Health literacy plays an important role in individuals’ decision-making. The scope of health literacy does not limit to traditional medical perspective. There are numerous public health problems that can be addressed in my Southside of Chicago community. Among the several public health problems facing my Southside of Chicago community there are two that are more urgent. Health education or one might say lack thereof is a problem that needs to be addressed. My community is plagued with many of the residents suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and the killer virus known as HIV.
