When an individual decides to take the opportunity to attend college, there is many life changes that take place in their current lifestyle. The experience of college is rewarding for every individual. Some college students are "students who work" others are "workers who study". Time management, balancing work, school and personal activities are crucial and can present occasional or ongoing stress. Topics to be discussed include; perceived stress and health promotion practices, financial stress and the economic downturn, and stress management.

In a study conducted to develop a better understanding of health promotion practices and perceived stress among college students, it is observes students with less perceived stress generally practice healthier lifestyles. Lasting behavior patterns which promote long term health promotion practices often times are develped during the college years. Gender is a factor in health promotion practices among college students. Higher level of physical activity, stress management and spiritual growth activities presented in male students in comparison to female students. Measuring an individual level of perceived stress and health practices is difficult, however, gaining an understanding of the relationship between them weighs importance. In a Pacific Northwest university, a study conducted to gain understanding showed lower stressed students were more likely to exercise and have healthier routine lifestyle practices.
