In an ideal world an effective and efficient manager would also be an effective and efficient leader. Health Care is such a diverse field comprised of many different specialties, departments, staff and patients. In a world of constant change it is always challenging for any manager to meet the administrative and leadership needs of any team. The need of having a strong and dynamic individual in a management role to encourage their team to stay motivated, up to date with health care changes, and want to come back to work every day is vital to the success of any organization as a whole.

Life took her passion for improving and providing excellent health care services through a different path (Lewis, 2018). Her current role has allowed her to grow as a person, healthcare provider, and manager. It is her experiences as a manager that has molded her into the leader she is now. Even after completing her Bachelors in Healthcare Administration, Charnetta has continued her education and will soon graduate with a Masters Degree in Healthcare and Business Administration (Lewis, 2018).
Healthcare is a difficult field to continually both retain and recruit employees. According to Compdata Surveys and Consulting, the turnover rate in the healthcare field in 2015 was 19.2% and has been rising each consecutive year (Compdata Surveys and Consulting, 2015). Internal factors such as inability to integrate, impulsivity and integrity are three of the top reasons turnover rates are so high in the healthcare field (Bean, 2016). On the other hand, external factors that fuel the high turnover are workload, leadership and growth opportunities (Compdata Surveys and Consulting, 2015). Both internal and external factors can be combined into poor

Another huge responsibility that Charnetta spends about 75% of her time on is administrative work (Lewis, 2018). Part of her administrative work includes, but is not limited to, managing the employee schedule, reviewing the spending budget, addressing interpersonal issues amongst staff, attending leadership meetings, interviewing potential employees, contributing to policy enforcement, processing and ensuring compliance with such policies (Lewis, 2018). The other 25% of Charnetta’s time is spent supporting her team by helping with their everyday responsibilities (Lewis, 2018). She has found that working side by side with her staff has allowed her employees to respect her as a leader because she takes the time to help support her team (Lewis, 2018). Charnetta’s authentic leadership approach has promoted a sense of respect from manager to employees and has allowed her the advantage to learn what matters most to each team member (Lewis, 2018). For any leader in the healthcare industry, knowing what motivates their team members gives them insight to what they can to improve job satisfaction (Buchbinder & Shanks,

A nurse manager plays an important role on a hospital unit. Evans defines the role of a nurse manager as one who makes sure all the needs required on a daily basis are accomplished (Evans, 2011). Evans goes on to say that one primary responsibility of a nurse manager acting in the position of a leader is to “raise the level of expectation and help employees reach their highest level of potential excellence” (Evans, 2011). With this said, it is important to identify potential barriers and problems that a nurse manager would face on a given unit and create or adopt evidence-based interventions to eliminate these problems. When this is accomplished, it will help to foster a work environment that maintains safety to patients as well as staff.
It is important for nurses to be well organized and if leaders are strong in organization, the team will be as well. “Nurse leaders at every level and position must develop organizational and management skills, whether they are managing human, fiscal, policy, time, material or other resources” (Canadian Nurse Association, 2008, p. 9). “Exerting good management skills is part of being a good leader – and leadership skills are necessary for good management” (Canadian Nurses Association, 2008, p. 9). When nurses are able to organize their time, they are able to assess their patients thoroughly. Following these assessments, nurses are able to organize and prioritize which patient is in most need of assistance or immediate attention. If a leader is not well organized themselves, patient care may be affected. Practical Nurses like any other nurses need to have strong organizational skills, especially, if a practical nurse is working on a demanding, fast paced unit. Patient’s health and well-being depends on their ability to manage information and multi-task. It is easy to become overwhelmed and make mistakes if a practical nurse lacks in good organizational skills. Being well organized is even more important when working short staffed. In this instance the practical nurse would have to be able to organize her patients in priority order and be able to divide her time accordingly to provide safe and competent
The purpose of this paper is to describe the role and functions of the Director of Health Information Management and the Supervisor of Medical Records Coder. I will provide a synopsis of what I observed and the activities I participated in during the learning experience. In addition I will provide an analysis of their primary roles and functions as they relate to nursing and patient services. Additionally, I will provide insights I have gained into the leadership behaviors or style as a result of my observations and interactions. Finally I will summarize my learning experience by comparing my observations to sources from the literature that present evidence, best practices, or standards related to this specific role.
Hospital administrators will charge nurse leaders with ensuring that patient positive outcomes prevail while also controlling overhead. Nurse leaders are specially trained just for this task. Clinical Nurse Leaders are the experts that America’s patients will rely on to keep them safe and healthy in hospital settings.
Finally, according to Wilkins there are more than 11 million employees working in the field of healthcare services. To retain these employees, leaders should be equipped to keep these employees motivated. A national study was done in 2003 through 2004 by Healthcare@Work showed healthcare employees have the lowest level of commitment to their job. The study indicated that healthcare managers are lacking the necessary leadership skills that keep employees committed and motivated. The study also showed that healthcare organizations should look deeper into its management culture and rethink the effectiveness of its current leaders. Healthcare@Work found that challenges in the workplace if ineffective leadership and what steps needs to be done to improve this problem (Wilkins, 2004).
The focus of this paper is to explore the role of the registered nurse as a leader and manager in the healthcare team. The role of management in nursing affects almost every aspect of the registered nurse’s daily work. An effective manager requires a variety of interpersonal skills that are both learned and intuitive. These skills are of great importance in the management of clients, family, and other healthcare professionals. Management skills are both learned and intuitive, although practice and experience may be one of the most essential ingredients to effective management. This paper explores a few of the essential skills required to be an effective manager.
During my interview with Regina Martinez, BS RN and currently an Assistant Director of a home health agency, I discovered her leadership style matched the above quote. Martinez had extensive experience in management prior to joining the medical field. As a single working mother, she worked her way up from waitress to manger of a popular seafood restaurant. However, her dream had always been to become a nurse and she began her medical career as a certified nurse’s aide (CNA), while working through college. She graduated from nursing school with a Bachelor’s degree in Science and has been a Registered Nurse (RN) for more than two decades. She quickly earned the respect of doctors and fellow nurses, becoming a Charge Nurse on the floors she worked. She has worked as Medical Surgery nurse, emergency room, and as Director of Nursing for home health and long-term care facilities where she was responsible for over 150 employees.

Healthcare administration provides leadership and managemnt to health care systems, hospitals, and private or public health systems. There are requirements for most professions in the health industry but with the proper education and certification, most entry-level careers are attainable. Healthcare administrators are leaders so one must be able to handle the responsibility of the job. There are characteristics that can be associated with being a health care administrator. My research has helped me learn many aspects of this profession and what it takes
In today’s society, leadership is a common yet useful trait used in every aspect of life and how we use this trait depends on our role. What defines leadership is when someone has the capability to lead an organization or a group of people. There are many examples that display a great sense of leadership such being an educator in health, a parent to their child, or even a nurse. In the medical field, leadership is highly used among nurses, doctors, nurse managers, director of nursing, and even the vice president of patient care services. Among the many positions in the nursing field, one who is a nurse manager shows great leadership. The reason why nurse manager plays an important role in patient care is because it is known to be the most difficult position. As a nurse manager, one must deal with many patient care issues, relationships with medical staff, staff concerns, supplies, as well as maintaining work-life balance. Also, a nurse manager represents leadership by being accountable for the many responsibilities he or she holds. Furthermore, this position is a collaborative yet vital role because they provide the connection between nursing staff and higher level superiors, as well as giving direction and organization to accomplish tasks and goals. In addition, nurse managers provide nurse-patient ratios and the amount of workload nursing staff has. It is their responsibility to make sure that nursing staff is productive and well balanced between their work and personal lives.
Quality health care is precipitously deteriorating amongst the nation’s health care industry. The health industry trends of high turn over rates amongst staff and important key employees are creating a rift in profit margins, decreasing patient quality care, triggering higher expenses and loss of patients (Hunt, 2009). In the “Best Practices in Health Leadership Talent Management and Succession Planning” case studies, presented by the National Center for
Management and Leadership skills in Public Health system: The health care system is a complex of services, organizations, and trained health professional that are engaged in providing health services within an area (Peterson, 2011). Over the past years the health care system,Ministry of health, and other health services are faced with challenges regarding proper leadership and management in the health care. There is a need for proper management and leadership in a work place and studies have been carried out to address these issues and ways to help curb it, there for the focus of this literature is on leadership and management in the public health sector.
Motivators at work are everywhere. “You meet patients that you find connections with and form a bond which can help motivate you to get more invested into projects to reach out and be more involved. Patient care is what gets me out of bed”. Being one-on-one with people helps to learn new things and push you to work harder with other patients.
Motivation is the force that transforms and uplifts people to be productive and perform in their jobs. Maximizing employee’s motivation is a necessary and vital to successfully accomplish the organization’s targets and objectives. However, this is a considerable challenge to any organizations managers, due to the complexity of motivation and the fact that, there is no ready made solution or an answer to what motivates people to work well (Mullins,2002).
