Weight-Loss Surgery for a Better Health When will be the day the war against obesity is finally over? In the last decade, people becoming obese and overweight has become a global issue. Obesity significantly increases the risks of developing a large variety of health-related problems. Diet, exercise and weight-loss surgeries are the most common solutions to this problem. Many people get tired of trying to change their diets; they lack the motivation to become more active or to get so many medications to lose weight. For whatever reason they may have, they stay on the path to becoming overweight. With modern science and newer technologies emerging everyday, weight-loss surgeries have become one of the most popular and useful tools to fight obesity. As a treatment for severe obesity, weight-loss surgery is an excellent option to lose weight because it can eliminate or alleviate many obesity-related medical conditions, as well as help patients remove a large percentage of body fat and improve the quality of life in the patients. Weight-loss surgery is a great tool to improve or take away many obesity-related medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Two of the most popular weight-loss surgeries are The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and The Lap-Band. These surgical procedures are excellent options for individuals with severe obesity problems. Not everyone is a good candidate for this type of surgeries. Weight loss surgery may be considered only after trying many other treatments that have not worked successfully. When these type of medical procedures are performed properly, it can save the patient’s life. For most patients, these surgeries help to highly improve their health in general. Only those persons deemed morbidly obese and that have been unable to lose weight through diet and exercise qualify for… surgery. Criteria includes having a body mass index of more than 40, which equates to about 100 pounds overweight for men and 80 pounds overweight for women. (Sanchez)
However, you have weighed the pros and cons and decided you are going to do it because you cannot get rid of the fat that has been plaguing you for years and you are sick and tired of trying.

More than 40,000 people a year are so desperate to lose weight they turn to the controversial, sometimes life-threatening surgery such as Gastric Bypass. I will be explaining what the surgery entitles, disadvantages vs. advantages. And most important, is Gastric bypass surgery the right choice when considering the risks. The most common form of “stomach stapling” is gastric bypass. In this procedure, a small pouch is formed in the stomach and stapled shut. The small intestine is then cut and stapled onto the pouch, shrinking the stomach’s ability to take in food. The technique involves removing a section of the stomach and rearranging the small bowel to divert bile and pancreatic secretions away from the food stream. Fats and starches flow through without being absorbed. In order to be a candidate for the surgery, patients must be considered morbidly obese or at least 100 pounds overweight. Before an individual gets the go-ahead, he or she meets with doctors and psychologists to rule out all other ways of help. Surgery may sound like the best option for a morbidly overweight person, but a small figure comes at a high price. There are health risks and the side effects can be fatal. Three people will die during every 1,000 procedures, according to the ASBS. Let me tell you about more disadvantages. More than one-third of obese patients who have gastric surgery develop gallstones. Nearly one in three develop nutritional deficiencies. Patients could also be at risk for anemia, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease.

Obesity in America is a very serious problem affecting many Americans currently and is a problem that continues to grow each year. “Over the past 40 years, the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled in the United States” (Wimalawansa). This issue is known to many but believed not be an issue to care much about but this is not true. Obesity in America affects everyone regardless if they are obese or not. In order to resolve the problem, we can slaughter all the adults that are currently obese in America.
Abraham and Mira warnes in 1988 that health educators and health professionals should weigh up carefully the benefits of weight loss against the risks of inducing psychological disturbances such as eating disorders and adverse physiological side effects such as dieting and severe weight loss…(37)(ajn).
In the larger picture, weight loss surgeries have become “the fast food” response to weight loss demands by the public. In my opinion, many patients are using weight loss surgeries as the weight loss mean rather than their own self-control and self-discipline; instead of for use by those who couldn’t lose weight by any other way. Unfortunately, not all the participants need the weight loss surgeries, and not all receive a long lasting benefit from the surgeries. As obesity spikes nationwide, so does the use (and potential abuse by overuse) of surgical procedures for weight loss.
Cosmetic surgery is essentially not a bad thing. Some people suffer facial and body injuries or are born with a deformity which can only be corrected by plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery can also be a life saver in cases of extreme obesity. However, some people-especially young females- are becoming too obsessed with their looks and body. The quest of finding the perfect body has led many to the operating table, opting for multiple cosmetic surgeries.
After paying $6,000 for a liposuction procedure, there is still a good chance that the fat can grow back, therefore making the liposuction surgery useless. Liposuction is a temporary fix that should not be assumed to be permanent by the patient. Even after the patients have the surgery, if they were overweight before, they are still overweight (Rowland, 1998, p.3). Besides the chance that the fat cells can return, the patient can put his or her health in jeopardy if exc...
In our society today, there are many people that are overweight and want to lose weight fast. Some people consider liposuction, a technique in cosmetic surgery for removing excess fat from under the skin by suction. It is the most popular form of cosmetic surgery, and both men and women are using liposuction. It was introduced in 1982, and liposuction’s popularity increased as they improved the technique, and the recovery time. In 2002, there were 372,831 liposuction procedures performed in the United States, approximately 13% of all plastic surgical procedures. Now most liposuction surgeries are being done as outpatient surgeries, so after the surgery the patient can go back home. To some patients this might be beneficiary, since they don’t have to take so much time of work, or have kids that they need to take care of. The shorter the recovery time the faster the person can go back to their daily activities. Liposuction techniques may be used to reduce localized fat deposits of the thighs, hips, buttocks, Abdomen, waist, upper arms, back, inner knee, chest area, cheeks, chin and
