Hazing at Fraternities and Sororities
Many pledges join sororities and fraternities in search of friendships that will last throughout life. However, quite a few young people get caught in life-threatening situations because they are not aware of the commitments to which they are swearing themselves. The idea behind joining a house is to form a relationship in which the members are one big family at heart, yet many sorority and fraternity members – while advocating status, popularity, and togetherness -- have betrayed the ideals of Greek life. Sororities and fraternities should stress bonding relationships among brothers and sisters, and not allow this idea to be neglected and abused by hazing. Plain and simple, hazing is an intentional action taken by active members to inflict physical and mental discomfort, harassment, and embarrassment upon future members of a house.
Of course, there are Greek houses that do not haze, but in reality, most do participate in this sadistic ritual. How can the discomfort and endangerment of pledges be ignored during hazing? The lack of supervision and responsibility has caused hazing to become a seriously dangerous issue that is not always addressed by members. Students who have gained control of these organizations have gone full speed ahead at making up their own rules. As time has passed, they seem to have forgotten the true meaning of brotherhood and sisterhood. These members that choose to imperil pledges take advantage of the pledges’ desire for popularity and status, thereby failing to acknowledge the humiliation and emotional discomfort that pledges can be made to endure. There have been a number of incidents where pledges have been forced to drink too much, and they have died from al...

...of hazing rituals is to have more supervision and be more cautious about dangerous activities. Alcohol is a common part of the fraternity life and using it to haze can have severe damaging effects; it can even be deadly. More comforting support should be given to the pledges, rather than intimidation and discouragement. Students have to mature and live the values of education and responsibility. Instead of searching for weakness in a pledge, active members should begin to test the hearts of new members. The love and support of a family are the main justifications for the Greek tradition on campus. Cruel initiations have lasted nearly one hundred years; but if hazing does not stop now, administrators are bound to put an end to the Greek system of communal life for college students. Students would then lose a system for forming friendships that ought to last a lifetime.
While reading Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, I learned more about the inner workings of Greek Life. I learned that the odds of me finding a sorority are so slim due to my independent and different personality. While I am not good at sticking up for myself, something this book has made me feel is crucial to blend in and conform to an ideal to fit into a sorority, I am too opinionated. There are not many sororities (at least shown in Pledged) that welcome girls who are different, preferring to stay similar. For example, each pledge class would soon like identical within a few months of pledging. Another thing I learned about is the careful planning and manipulation that occurs throughout sororities,
In "Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture" Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Spade analyze the social perspective of the gendered relations in male fraternities that add to the high rate of violence against women on many college campuses. They list a host of factors that distinguish higher-risk from lower-risk atmospheres discussing the rates of rape in colleges and state how "1 out of 4 college women say they were raped or experienced an attempted rape" (217). Additionally, "1 out of 12 college men say they forced a woman to have sexual intercourse against her will" (Boswell, Spade 217). In other words Boswell and Spade indicated that the rates were high when it came down to women getting raped in colleges by men who also attended those colleges. In addition, Boswell and Spade specify in how most people are aware of rape but know very little about rape culture (Boswell, Spade 217).
Do people really understand the secrets behind the Greek community? There are many pressures girls face that the public is not familiar with that are specifically evident in sororities. Alexandra Robbins, the author of the book Pledged: The Secret Lives of Sororities, went undercover and followed four different girls during their experiences within the Greek system. Although there are many struggles girls can face in sororities, the five most prevalent type of pressures include: having a perfect body image, substance abuse, stress, silence, and hazing.
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and professionally as a “lady of distinction” and “exemplary character.” Most importantly, I continuously remain involved in community service, being involved allows me the opportunity to learn and understand the lives and circumstances of others by opening my mind, heart, and soul. Overall these qualities strengthen my passion to be a member of the prestigious Alp...
Additionally, analyzing the overall structure of the Greek System will allow me to understand why students feel inclined to become a member of these organizations, while others don’t. In order to comprehend this student subculture, however, it is imperative to define what the Greek System really is and what core values they are based on. The Greek System, composed of different fraternity and sorority communities, are organizations that focus on academic, social, and professional support.... ... middle of paper ... ...
When rushing and pledging a fraternity you meet brothers from that fraternity and maybe even brothers and pledges from other fraternities. Your social skills greatly improve by actively communicating with brothers from the fraternity and socials, which are events planned with other sororities such as ice skating, bowling, etc. A fraternity pushes you academically, for example, pledges have grade checks before they are initiated as official brothers. For Sigma Chi, a pledge needs above a 3.0 grade point average in order to be initiated. If below, the chances of being dropped from the fraternity is very high.
When you are a senior is high school your main focuses are finishing your college applications and if your a girl of course prom, you don't realize you are a year away from entering college and the world of "rape culture". It is said that rape culture exists because we don't believe it does. Rape culture is defined as "an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture." We already have an idea that in colleges where sports is glorified that some professors will allow athletes to get away with numerous things from cheating to missing numerous classes but fraternity events can be high risk for rape. First I will summarize "Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture: Why Are Some Fraternities More Dangerous Places for Women?" written by A. Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Space. Then I will use information from my criminology class to better define violent crime . Lastly, I will explain rape on campuses is not a cultural component. Colleges should hold clubs such as fraternities and sports to the same level than others and be harshly punished for crimes they commit so they don't feel more superior and think they can get away with rape.
Greek organizations are debatably the most undervalued and misconceived aspect of college campuses. Most people don’t see the benefits that fraternities and sororities bring to college campuses and their communities. Some see these organizations as large beneficial clubs and others see them as potential problems. Many of the allegations put forth by individuals that discredit the benefits and good deeds done by Greek organizations are weak justifications for their removal from college campuses. Greek organizations provide campus communities with academically responsible students, philanthropic activities and increase community involvement.
Almost 8 million people are infected with hookworm (Freary et al), in severe cases it can result in death. On the contrary, epidemiological evidence suggests the hookworm may help with allergies and asthma. Two different scientific tests were performed to see if hookworms could help with symptoms of allergies and asthma. The first study was done to determine if hookworm infection would help airway responsiveness in a person who has allergies. The second study tested “to see the effects of experimental hookworm infection in asthma” (Freary et al). In comparison both the studies were trying to use hookworms as a treatment for issues with people’s immune systems. Contrastingly, the first study (based on allergies) had to be conducted first in order for the second study (asthma) to be conducted due to safety precautions. The allergy study also had to be conducted first to see if anything would even happen. Before these studies were performed there were two similar previously done studies. One of the studies tested hookworm intensity with normal people. It was important to have these studies as information for the two being analyzed for information on safety and the effects.
Hazing in universities across the nation has become a common tradition that develops mostly in Greek organizations. Hazing is seen in many different social groups such as schools, military units, sport teams, fraternities, and sororities. Prohibited by law for unnecessary reasons; hazing is a way to grow with friends in a closer way than independent students will ever have the chance to. Every year there are thousands of teenagers that pledge for a fraternity knowing of the possible chance of being hazed. People that join fraternities join for a sense of belonging and to meet people with similar interests. Trying to fit into a new college campus can be hard for a person to do. Almost every group pressures the new pledges to participate in hazing activities to create a sense of brotherhood. Hazing is a process that creates a sense of unity, also it teaches the one being hazed about himself and his brothers; being hazed into a group will help someone become a well-rounded person and will help them overcome struggles later in life.
School uniforms in public schools are becoming increasingly popular across the nation. The public school system would benefit greatly if this policy were to be adopted. Opposition is always a factor when trying to make changes. Taking all things into consideration, the positive effects would be far greater than the negative effects. School uniforms should be required in public schools because their use would lead to higher education, less violence, and lower cost to parents.
To have uniforms mandatory in public schools would have many reasons why it would be beneficial to not only students, but also parents and teachers. A benefit of having school uniforms would be that uniforms would reduce clothing costs and stress for parents by not having to spends hundreds of dollars each year on their children so that they can keep up with the latest fashions and trends. Another perk would be that most of the time uniforms reduce bullying among students by eliminating the bullying surrounding students preferred clothing choices. They could also be less distracted in school from looking at their peers’ clothes. Students who come from poorer families would not stand out or be judged by the students who are more fortunate. With uniforms, teachers would not have to make the tough decisions of what clothing is appropriate for students to wear. School uniforms also reduces fighting and theft in schools where gangs and poverty is common.

Being a pharmacist means entering into a diverse yet extremely rewarding field of work. Pharmacists are heavily involved in the preparation and dispensing of medicinal drugs. However, some pharmacists are involved in the actual research and development for the pharmaceutical manufacturers. Pharmacists fall into the Health Science career cluster. As of right now, the demand for pharmacists is going up at a steady rate due to the rapid expansion of the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries (Job Outlook for Pharmacists). Pharmacists are generally stationed in one location for the duration of their work. Unless of course a pharmacist is leaving to study more on efficient ways to work, info on new drugs, etc.. Pharmacists work year round doing virtually the same thing they started doing. Give or take a few new or old drugs being introduced there is not significant amounts of change that happens in this occupation regarding time such as peak times. Although, it could be argued that during some seasons there is more of a demand for prescription drugs to be given out because it might be a “sick season”. Therefore, this would cause a “peak” period. Most pharmacists generally work 40 hours a week. As with all professions though there are pharmacists, around 12%, that work more than 50 hours per week (Pharmacists - What They Do). Being a pharmacist requires a fairly decent amount of well tuned motor skills. This is simply because a pharmacist with shaky hands can overprescribe someone due to maybe giving more than the intended amount. The starting salary for a Pharmacist is between $81,000-$113,000 a year (Job Outlook for Pharmacists). Pharmacists are considered to have one of the most well paid health care jobs in the industry. They ca...
There are many benefits for making uniforms required to be worn in schools. According to US department of education (2014), uniforms are greatly cheaper than what students like to wear to schools today. Students compete with each other over who has the designer or best brand clothing at school each day. Uniforms make students not have to worry if they can afford some expensive brand clothing to wear to school everyday. This means there will be a lot less competitiveness within the students on what they are wearing. Plus, parents won’t have to buy tons of expensive clothing for their child so they are happy and “fit in.” Students will be able to get ready for school quite a bit quicker because they won’t have to go through the struggle of deciding what to wear and if their pants correspond with their shirt. So, this means that students will be able to have a little extra time in the morning and possibly get a little more sleep which will benefit everyone.
