Imagine a world where sea turtles are extinct; did you know that was preventable? The hawksbill sea turtle population is drastically low and if action is not taken they will soon become extinct. Several factors come into play in the extinction of this species; the most evident one is their breeding behavior. Due to the natural breeding behavior of the hawksbill sea turtle and their inability to sustain a viable population, they are going extinct; however, if they were introduced into breeding programs their extinction would be prevented.
Hawksbill sea turtles, or Eretmochelys imbricata, are classified under the Cheloniidae family (Gems & Gemology 38). The scientific name, Eretmochelys imbricata, comes from the Latin word imbricatus which means "covered with tiles" (38); the plates of the hawksbills carapace overlap one another like the tiles of a roof. The hawksbill turtle gets it common name because of its beak like appendage on its face.
This beak like appendage is an important feature of the hawksbill turtle because it is needed in order to eat some of the hard food that consists of its diet. Hawksbills sustain themselves on sponges, mollusks, and other sedentary animals (OCEANA). The hawksbill uses its beak like jaws to get food out of the crevices in coral reefs (Seaturltes911).An interesting fact about the hawksbills diet is that they are the only sea turtle that can actually eat glass. They use their jaws to break apart the glass and safely eat it (JBHP). The consumption of glass sustains the turtle and balances the ecosystem.
Hawksbill sea turtles are in danger of extinction, and because of that they are listed as critically endangered under the Endangered Species Act (OCEANA). Several factors ar...

Everyone loves the Florida manatee because they look like big puppy dogs with a cute endless smile. In addition, they are beautiful creatures that bring a smile to every face that sees them floating along in their natural habitat or in the local aquarium. Undoubtedly, the Florida manatee is one of the friendliest species in the world even though they are huge animals weighing up to twelve hundred pounds and reaching ten-foot long. Despite what this gentle creature has been through at the hands of human beings, the Florida manatee looks as happy as ever when they are sighted feeding in their natural environment. However, the manatee population is being threatened and needs help to prevent further decline. The reduction in the Florida manatee
Throughout the animal kingdom, adaptations take place continuously and even the smallest of changes can leave a significant impact. Examples can be seen within any plant or animal. One example would include sea turtles, specifically, the Loggerhead Turtles. These turtles are native to the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans as well as the Mediterranean Sea (Deurmit L 2007). They thrive in either temperate or tropical climates and can live in a myriad of biomes (Deurmit L 2007). These biomes include the pelagic, reef, coastal, and brackish water (Deurmit L 2007). Loggerhead turtles are omnivores and can eat anything from insects to aquatic crustaceans, to macro algae (Deurmit L 2007). According to Deurmit (2007) Caretta caretta is classified into Animalia Kingdom, Chordata Phylum, Vertebrata Subphylum, Reptilian Class, Testudines’ Order,
The efforts taking place through different conservation organizations and the State of Florida are making a mixed impact on the survival of Manatees and Sea Turtles. The decline in manatee population has decreased, but due to low reproduction rates, more needs to be done to avoid extinction. The sea turtle outlook is more species specific. Some species of turtle are seeing stabilization in population, while others are not. The State of Florida has a large array of custom license tags that support the conservation efforts taking place within the State. The proceeds go to benefit the local marine life in Florida. With financial resources, state and local cooperation, and through constant research and observation, we are able to learn more about both of these gentle animals. With human awareness of those living in Florida, these two animals will survive
cows. The Florida Manatee’s scientific name is Manatus latirostris. The scientific genus name Trichechus, means hair in Latin. The name Manatee comes from the Haitian word, "manati". A common term for manatees and dugongs are the “sea cow”.
“On Broadway, in New York, there is a penny arcade which used to sell baby terrapins that were scrawled with bon mots in enamel paint, such as KISS ME BABY.”(Hoagland p.154) “They were as dry as a heap of old bones in the sun; nevertheless, they were creeping over one another gimpy, doing their best to escape.” (Hoagland p.154) “He drank thirstily but would not eat and had none of the hearty, accepting qualities of wood turtles.” (Hoagland p.155) “He was morose, paler in color, sleeker and more Oriental in the carved ridges and rings that formed his shell.” (Hoagland p.155) Take a gander at how a turtle begins its life. In the wake of deliver, generally to some degree close to the water, it gives off an impression of being adequately fundamental to twist over some sensible sand and start swimming off to begin a presence. Then again, young turtles are in convincing hazard from the most punctual beginning stage. In fact, even with a short detachment to cross and couple of impediments in the course, there are various predators and unforgiving parts to drive forward. A little rate of sea turtles makes it past most punctual stages. An obviously fundamental task has significantly more behind it. Strength isn't for the most part anticipated that would go into something. Every so often it is relied upon to persevere
There has been a steep decline in sea otter populations due to water pollution and exploitation of furs. This has adversely affected marine ecology. It is therefore suggested that sea otters should be included in the endangered species list to protect them from further exploitation. This study focuses on the community ecology of sea otters and their impact on marine ecology. The need for their inclusion in the Endangered Species list and the implications of such an intervention are also evaluated.
The poem Mark O’Connor wrote “Turtles Hatching” at a time in his life when was closely studying nature.
The Dwarf Seahorse mostly eats non insect arthropods and is always a carnivore. To catch food they hook onto seagrass and are well camouflaged and catch drifting tiny animals like brine shrimp, copepods, and freshly hatched shrimp larvae. They prey is sucked near through the snout. Food progress in the seahorse is very fast causing it to absorb little nutrients. Because of this the sea horse can consume up to 3,000 brine shrimp a day (Animal Diversity Web).
Loggerhead sea turtles, scientifically labeled Carretta carretta, are the most global nesting turtle species and the most abundant in United State’s waters. While they are not nesting, they travel through open ocean water, spending time searching for food and resting on the sea floor. These turtles were nicknamed Loggerheads because of their large heads and strong jaw needed to break the shells of crustaceans. Loggerheads have the largest nesting range of any sea turtle, inhabiting the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans (Spotila, 2004).

Procuring and digesting nutrients happens in different ways in all different organisms but it all happens with the same goal of nourishing their bodies to continue living. Snapping turtles have a tongue that is thin and pink, appearing as a worm which
Horwath conducted many subtidal surveys on SCUBA in southern California and handled marine fish and invertebrates while assisting with research programs while an undergraduate student at University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB). She worked with the Lenihan Lab in UCSB’s Bren School for Environmental Science and Management; with Dr. Jack Engle for the Multi-agency Rocky Intertidal Network, a long-term monitoring program on the West coast of the U.S. with over 90 monitoring sites, and for the Channel Islands Research Program, a long-term subtidal expedition program that includes sites at all eight Channel Islands; and with Reef Check California as a survey coordinator/leader. 2005-2009. Reptiles & Amphibians Role – Piru Creek Diversion Sediment Maintenance Project Biological Monitoring – Location Ms. Horwath surveyed the project area for sensitive species. She monitored sediment excavation activities within the diversion pond for southern western pond turtles, two-striped garter snake, and southern California steelhead.
Loggerhead turtles can also add to the biodiversity of the waters it is in. Because they are constantly migrating and in contact with species and plants, loggerhead turtles end up carrying life on their shells. One loggerhead shell can contain 100 species of living animals and
Fresh Water turtles are small, yet amazing creatures to have and care for in your home. River Cooters, Red Eared Sliders, and Painted turtles are all common pet’s found in America. Though turtles are fun to have around they do require special care just like any other pet would. In most cases they make great pets but turtles aren’t the easiest pets to have so depending on your lifestyle you should think about how much time you’re willing to put into a turtle. They are usually cheap to buy yet the equipment for your turtle can get expensive. Along with cost you must find the time to put into this pet. They need nice set ups to live in as well as attention and proper handling.
