A father being in a child’s life is an absolute necessity. A male parent plays multiple roles in a child’s life. They’re supposed to help take on the many obstacles that will happen throughout their lifetime, whether it’s providing a positive male role model, discipline or with self-esteem issues. Our society may think not having a dad around does not impact a child’s life, however it does. This is coming from a young woman who did not have her father around. The authors discussed cognitive development, “mothers’ and fathers’ supportiveness were positively related to children’s language and cognitive outcomes across ages.” (p.222) I strongly agree with this statement, having both parents in a child’s life is very vital. The authors Cabrera, N. J., Shannon, J. D., Tamis-LeMonda, C. states that President Obama gave a speech on Father’s Day, June 21, 2009 where he said, “We need fathers to step up.” (p.215) We expect fathers to protect and give for their family while the mother takes care of the children and the home. According to an article, President Obama stated “As fathers, we need to be involved in our children’s lives, not just when it’s convenient or easy and when they’re doing well, but when it’s difficult and throughout their struggles.” (Parade, 2011) Absolutely fathers are mandatory more at those times, especially to their daughters. We look up to our fathers for guidance for discipline, for such as commitment. Committing to sports or homework, knowing the right time to say no to other activities that have taken place at the same time. Although we give fathers the opportunity to make a positive change, instead it seems as if many are refusing to take on the responsibility that’s expected by them. I am not saying that this what all fathers do, however majority of them lie within this
