Haunting

The worn, ageing floorboards creaked and moaned under my weight. My head whipped around twice, a slow panic rising like a lump in my chest before I realised I was the only person in the abandoned hallway. I should just go back to my room, pack my things and leave. But I couldn't bring myself to do it, not after those two deaths. There were children here, two little girls. If there was something in this failing hotel then I needed to do something about it. I was going to see the owners mother, even though she had forbidden it. Maybe the old woman would know something. I reached the decrepit staircase leading up the the owners mother's bedroom, the never-ending stairs seemed imposing and made me think of them as a gateway to hell. As I began to climb, I felt unsettled and paused. When I tried to move again I found that I couldn't. There was something gripping me by my shoes, tearing at my legs. Then suddenly it let go and I lurched forwards, bashing my knees against the splintered step . My chest heaved rapidly and my heart wouldn't quit pounding; it felt like it might tear out of my chest. Fuck. At least I defiantly knew there was something going on. The stairs creaked as I began again to trudge up each board, lumbering slowly. With each laborious step, I maintained a vice like grip on the railing, fearing another attack. One foot slowly followed the other. The mountain of steps grew more and more difficult and tiresome. An eternity seemed to await me. Once I reached the eerie upper landing, a cool shudder trickled down my spine. Glancing around nervously, I noticed sombre portraits staring down at me from behind layers of dust, seemingly penetrating my very being. As I walked forwards, I couldn't help but feel that someone was fo... ... middle of paper ... ... want... you'll have to leave.'' ''Wha- what? No, please! It's the middle of the night! Go and ask your daughter, the one with the long black hair. She'll tell you I didn't do anything!'' ''So not only can you not listen to me, you're insane too?! I only have one daughter, Lucy. She's got short, light blond hair and she's playing in her room!'' The same panic I felt in the room began to rise again in my chest and I could feel my throat becoming dry. I tried to draw in a breath to steady myself before running back upstairs, when a scream unlike anything I'd ever heard before pierced through the air. My heart almost stopped beating, my stomach turned to ice. The whole house seemed to shake with terror. A ghastly whiteness spread over Clarissa's face and for a moment a saw a glassy stare of horror in her eyes before we both bound back up the beaten staircase once more.
