“A pair of star-crossed lovers take their own lives” (Prologue), written by Baz Luhrmann, a modernized twist of the fate of a crazy couple in love. Romeo and Juliet are forbidden to love for their families, the Capulets and the Montagues, are strictly feuding. They defy the rules of their families and secretly get married, however, things take a turn for the worst when Romeo is banished from Verona Beach. This leads to a twisted fate causing the lovers to take their own lives for one another, leaving both dead. Baz Luhrmann portrayed his feelings through characterization, music, symbols, setting, and tension. Luhrmann uses these techniques to portray that love conquers hate; Juliet and Romeo’s forbidden acts were conquered by their love for one another. The featured song in the film is I'm Kissing You by Des’ree. This song has a significant role in helping the audience understand the emotional connection between the two lovers. This song is the perfect fit to engage the audience because it is played throughout the scene where Romeo learns of Juliet’s “death” and is extremely distraught. “But watching the stars without you/my soul cried”(Des’ree). Romeo is extremely upset at the thought of losing Juliet and having to live life without her. The background piano music also adds tension because it is a hopeful, yet suspenseful tone.
