Imagine with me that you have a member in your family who was attacked; at his college and had the word “it” carved into his chest, simply for being true to himself. Then imagine how you would feel after you found out that this happened just because he was transsexual. Things like this really hit me hard like a blow to my stomach. I 100% believe people that are responsible for these horrific crimes should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law; I strongly support laws about hate crimes. A lot of people hear that hate crimes are occurring but do they really know what hate crimes are? Through this essay I will discuss what hate crimes are, how hate crimes can be prevented and the healing process after a hate crime has been committed.
People who commit hate crimes have a certain type of personal interest. Some find the glory in hurting a certain group of people who have done him or someone they know wrong in the past. Some predators do it because they like watching people get hurt and like to watch them feel bad about themselves for their sexual orientation or race. Most hate crimes are committed by juveniles. The offender normally would seek out the victim in a school or neighborhood. Targets of the attack are very interchangeable anybody who is identified as a member of a particular group or a particular way of life is subject to an attack. This does not mean don’t support what you believe or to hide your sexual orientation, it means if you truly believe in something you need to take the risks and support them. To summarize, people all over the United States have to deal with hate crimes. Some are more serious than others, some are just one offense and then there are some that are continuous. Just remember when you see something happen imagine if you were in their position or, it was happening to someone you know. Wouldn’t you want to help and be there for them and be able to help then through the whole progress? Well, why wouldn’t you be able to do that for a stranger? If you see someone get attacked in a hate crime manner make sure you step up, speak up and put a stop to it. Make sure they have resources to help them go through all the steps of healing. Dealing with hate crimes is incredibly difficult and it’s something no one should have to go through.
