Nearly 17 years ago in the United Kingdom, a fictional sport known as Quidditch was born into a story that many did not know would captivate the world and eventually become more than people ever dreamt.
Quidditch, found in the Harry Potter series, is a competitive sport that is extremely rough, semi-contact sport played by wizards and witches. Each match is played between two teams of seven players riding flying broomsticks. The seven players include: three chasers, two beaters, one keeper, and one seeker. There are four balls that are used during each match: the Quaffle, two Bludgers, and the Golden Snitch. There are six ring-shaped goals, three on each side of the Quidditch pitch, that stand tall above the ground.
During each match, the Chasers try to keep possession of the Quaffle, a spherical ball about 12 inches in diameter, and try to score a goal, which is worth ten points, by throwing it through one of the opponents’ three hoops. They can pass it among themselves, but only one player is allowed in the scoring area at any time. The two Beaters have to protect the rest of the team from the Bludgers, round, jet black balls, made of iron, and 10 inches in diameter, by hitting them at the other team with a wooden bat (like a baseball bat), which they hold in one hand. The Keeper has to protect the team’s goal hoops by flying in front of them and stopping the opponents from throwing the Quaffle through them. The Seeker’s job is probably the most important one on the team, and it is to catch the Golden Snitch before the opposing team’s Seeker. The Snitch is a small golden ball the approximate size of a walnut 1 inch in diameter with silver wings that move so fast that it nearly impossible to see. Catching the Golden Snitch ends ...

... is a magical object within the canon of the Harry Potter novels, in Muggle quidditch, the snitch is simply a tennis ball contained in a sock tucked in the waistband of a snitch runner. The snitch runner is a neutral player affiliated with neither team dressed in all gold or yellow. After release, the snitch is allowed to roam an area beyond the playing field. The seekers search for the runner, but if they fail to catch him, he returns to the pitch after a pre-determined time.
The game begins with the Quaffle and Bludgers placed in the center of the field and all players in line with their respective goalposts. After the Snitch is out of sight, the referee yells 'Brooms Up!' to start the game. The game is played for as long as it takes to catch the snitch. 30 points are awarded to the team who captures the Snitch, and the team with the highest number of points wins.
The sports, games, and pastimes of the time of Shakespeare have not just been set aside and paid no attention to, but they have been effectively abandoned and omitted. The Elizabethan hobbies have been thoroughly overshadowed by many modern sports such as baseball, football, soccer, hockey, and an abundant amount of other games. The 16th century English pastimes included many activities that were impeccable examples of both simplicity and amusement intertwined. With all of these amusing yet transparent games, the era was most acknowledged for theater- a prominent art that is still valued today. The sports, games, and pastimes of the time of Shakespeare are rarely played today because they would be considered illegal, barbarous, and inhumane.
Participation in sports and games has long been a part of Native culture. The most significant example of a sport invented and played by Natives is lacrosse. Lacrosse is still designated as the official sport of Canada despite the overwhelming popularity of hockey (http://canada.gc.ca). Lacrosse was one of many varieties of indigenous stickball games being played by Native Americans and Canadians at the time of European contact. Almost exclusively a male team sport, it is distinguished from other stick and ball games, such as field hockey or shinny, by the use of a netted racquet with which to pick the ball off the ground, throw, catch and vault it into or past a goal to score a point.
The lacrosse players would go up to each other and smack at each other’s sticks trying to dislodge the ball. The French named the game lacrosse which means the game of the stick. Sometimes a player would hit an opposing team’s player, severely injuring the person or breaking bones. There is even one account of a player dying. Anthony Aveni an editor for History.org says, “It is quite common to see someone crippled for the rest of his life who would not have had this misfortune but for his own obstinacy” (paragraph 9). The Indians did not have a goal so they used landmarks such as rocks and trees for a goal. Jane Claydon, an editor for Federation of International Lacrosse claims, “Some estimates have mentioned between one hundred and one hundred thousand players…. On the field at one time” (paragraph 2). There are tons of players. The fields were very extreme ranging anywhere from nine hundred yards to nine miles in length. Players at one end could not see the ball at the other end. The game would last from sun up to sun down many
The whole world comes together for the World Cup, a finals championship tournament for every country's team to compete to see who will be the winner. Even old people enjoy watching this game. According to Dictionary.com, soccer is defined as a 'form of football played between two teams of 11 players, in which the ball may be advanced by kicking or by bouncing it off any part of the body, except the arms and hands. However, in the case of the goalkeepers, they may use their hands to catch, carry, throw, or stop the ball.' There are no complex rules. No touching the ball only kicking. You have to get the ball into the goal to score a point. There also half times and out of bounds, but it's simple to understand. The competition is what I enjoy the most. I feel the rush of adrenaline shoot through me as I carry the ball down the field, and the other players trying to take it away from me.
of the sport was a game called rounders, which was played in England (Lewine 27). Players hit a ball with a bat, which is
When you throw a football across the yard to your friend, you are using physics. You make adjustments for all the factors, such as distance, wind and the weight of the ball. The farther away your friend is, the harder you have to throw the ball, or the steeper the angle of your throw. This adjustment is done in your head, and it's physics. Physics is the branch of science that deals with the physical world. The area of physics that is most relevant to football is mechanics, the study of motion and its causes. The three main categories of motion that apply to the game are:
First of all, the rules of football require one to equip himself with approximately twenty pounds of equipment, including a helmet, shoulder pads, and girdle pads. This is because football has the most contact involved out of all sports. In a football game, the norm is that the home team wears colorful jerseys and the visiting team wears white jerseys. Moreover, if a team’s offense is on the field, their defense is on the sideline. A team’s offense includes a center, who snaps the ball to the quarterback. The “QB” then has a choice to run with the ball, hand it off to a running back, or throw it to a wide receiver. The quarterback has an offensive line to protect him from the assailing defense. If a teammate happens to score a touchdown, he earns his team six points, which allows for the kicker to kick an extra point, and give his team a total of seven points. However, if the offense fails to travel at least ten yards within four attempts, or “downs,” they have the opti...
Not only do sports offer many opportunities, but they also create an “illusion of innocence.” On the field, the players are the stars of the show. They are the best. They are the role models. They are innocent. All the spectators look at these players as if they are superheroes when they are
American football conversely, is played by tossing the ball and is kicked when a field objective is obliged or in their terms an arrival punts. In soccer, kicking the ball to the next group is infrequently or exceeding all expectations even further, done deliberately. This is done intentionally on reasonable play calls; these are occasions which happen during the time spent whichever group has the ball while another player is compelled to be taken a gander at by therapeutic authorities amid time of
each end is a cage, or goal which the players try to hit the puck into. They hit the pucks with wooden or graphite sticks with curved ends. The puck is a disc-like object made of black rubber.
In a soccer game there are two teams of 11 players who try to score a point by kicking a ball into the opponents net. Soccer is played on a rectangular field with a net on each short side of the field. All players must hit the ball with their feet or body and only the goalie is allowed to touch the ball with his/her hands. There are many things you can do to condition yourself to play.
Soccer is a sport that is all about motion and how to use movements most effectively. Speed and velocity are very important when it comes to motion because with out them there would be no motion. When playing soccer speed is essential to being a productive player. The game is fast paced and so the players must also be quick on their feet. Soccer players may not know that velocity is essential to being able to control their movements. But physics proves that both are essential to soccer. Speed and direction are b...
“First appearing in England in the 14th century, King Edward lll issued a decree outlawing the practice of field hockey”(Wpadminskhdev). King Edward lll referred to the sport as an idle game and banned it from being played. He issued in the proclamation “Moreover we ordain that you prohibit under penalty of imprisonment all and sundry from such stone, wood and iron throwing; handball, football, or hockey; coursing and cock- fighting, or other such idle games”(Editors). Although King Edward lll did not encourage field hockey, the game made it all the way to our generation today. “Field hockey developed in the British Isles in the late 19th century by public schools along with the help of Middlesex cricket clubs in London”(Wpadminskhdev ). The origins of field hockey can be discovered in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Persia. “In England, professional men teams were formed, but later after, several women’s colleges formed the first Women’s field hockey team in the United States”(Mifflin).
Association football is played in agreement with a set of rules known as the ‘Laws of the Game’. The game is played using a sphere-shaped ball of 71 cm circumference known as the ‘football’ or ‘soccer ball’. Two teams of eleven players each participate to get the ball into the other team’s goal, thus scoring a goal. The team that has scored more goals at the end of the game wins. If both teams have scored an equal number of goals then the game is a tie. Each team is controlled by a captain.
Rugby is a sport that was invented in Europe supposedly as a spinoff in soccer supposedly in 1823, but had yet to develop into a full-fledged sport in 1871. In 19th century soccer (here forth referred to properly as football) players were allowed to pick up the ball and free kick it, which in Rugby is referred to as a dropkick. As time passed many variations of football and rugby traveled across the European/Asian region until they distinguished themselves as different sports and established specific rules that correspond to each. This sport is very clearly a terrific example of a cause and effect situation, from the reasons behind its origin to everyday games it is the perfect real world example. To this day Rugby continues to attract many viewers due to its fast pace, various options for scoring, and violence, and due to this, it is one of the most enjoyable games to watch.
