What makes up a good story? This essay discusses that short stories are better than other stories because they’re short, characters, and theme. The characters job is to put it simply a character is any person, animal, or creature in a story. A themes job is the main idea or an underlying meaning of a literacy work that may be stated directly or stated indirectly. Short stories job is a story with a really good theme but but isn’t as long as other stories. Some examples of short stories are “the most dangerous game” also the short story “Harrison Bergeron” I think that short stories are good because they’re not that long and it wont take me a year. Just to finish a book. But most of the short story books are more interesting …show more content…
Theirs Sarah his girlfriend. Also theirs a lot of numbers, well there’s 10. 3 died in the beginning. So that’s what makes the story more interesting. In the previous paragraph I stated what theme is and now in this paragraph. im going to give you examples of theme. So a theme for survival is man vs. nature, a theme for power is the search for, the loss of, what are we willing to exchange it for. A theme for courage is courage to deal with conflict, lack of, developing, conquering with. So im guessing you get the hang of what theme actually is. Some people may say that characters don’t matter in a story but how would it be a story without any characters. Also if you don’t have a theme then whats the moral of the story whats the lesson. But of course you need characters that’s what make stories good also that’s what get peoples attention for a good example, I read a book about a cepan which is basically there parent but he ended up dying which made me sad because they make you so attached to a character. And sorry for the spoiler. And without a theme how are you supposed to know what it was for like some books are usually don’t give up, or curiosity killed the
In To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based on an author’s opinion on a subject. The theme of innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a conflict that connects to the theme that innocence should be protected is the death of Tom Robinson.
Theme is the subject of talk, a topic, or morals that the author is trying to get readers to comprehend. When reading an excerpt, the theme is not directly stated in the text, so you must dig deeper into the context to understand the matter trying to be portrayed. In both Angela's Ashes and The Street, we can distinguish a like theme of struggling through life’s complications. After reading the two different stories, we could select the theme from using character, events, and the setting.
Elements that make for the best literary short story are character, meaning, tone and tension. These four literary elements make your story have a plot. These elements also contribute to your story’s purpose and ambition. The short stories we have read this semester integrate these elements, making successful and literary filled works.
The future entails breakthrough technology and unknown leadership. The harsh rules of the government in, Harrison Bergeron, causes the protagonist, Harrison Bergeron, to come up with the dangerous idea to overthrow the government which leads to the violent behavior of the antagonist Diana Moon Glampers. The author, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., uses character development to show the theme of the harsh government through the eyes of the protagonist, antagonist, and the foil characters Hazel and George Bergeron in this futuristic society.
A narrative is specified to amuse, to attract, and grasp a reader’s attention. The types of narratives are fictitious, real or unification or both. However, they may consist of folk tale stories, mysteries, science fiction; romances, horror stories, adventure stories, fables, myths and legends, historical narratives, ballads, slice of life, and personal experience (“Narrative,” 2008). Therefore, narrative text has five shared elements. These are setting, characters, plot, theme, and vocabulary (“Narrative and Informational Text,” 2008). Narrative literature is originally written to communicate a story. Therefore, narrative literature that is written in an excellent way will have conflicts and can discuss shared aspects of human occurrence.
...rves the way for the plot, the theme is the central idea around which a literary piece revolves. Without the theme the plot would be meaningless and there would be nothing for the readers to derive from the literary piece. Without the plot, the theme would be meaningless as there would be nowhere to consign the message the writer intends to give the reader. It can be said that the plot and theme are the two most important literary elements of a literary piece and are inter-dependant.
Theme is the underlying power beneath a story; the “force” that makes the whole experience worthwhile. Theme is “an idea or message that the writer wishes to convey” (Holt 874). A theme can be either stated or implied. A stated theme is a theme “that the other expresses directly in his work (protic.net); an implied theme is a theme “that is not directly stated in the work” (protic.net). As mentioned before, both of these stories have an implied theme, which now is revealed to mean that the author of the story insinuated it. Themes exist in all stories (verbal or written) and can be long, short, true or false. “Earth people will beat out any other intelligent life-form in any and all competitions” is a theme, but “good always beats evil” is one too. “Once upon a time . . .” stories have themes too, except they are more one-dimensional. For example,...
What elements are needed to create a good short story? As John Dufrense quoted "A good story has a visionary quality, a personal voice, a signature gesture(1969). The elements used should be used so strongly that it pulls you in; forcing you to connect to the people in the story. Not every story is written well enough to be capable of doing this. This also creates a connection with the reader; leaving some type of effect or impacting the reader along with the characters’ lives. Although there are many elements in writing but one of the greatest things of writing is the ability to make the reader empathize with the characters. This goes beyond than just a connection with the characters; when the reader is able to apprehend with the characters he or she is truly relating and reaching out to them. The author has accomplished something truly special when the reader has the ability to feel the agony that a character is feeling.
A theme in a story is a general idea or symbol that is developed within a piece of writing. Having faith in yourself is represented by several things that are in Charlie’s life. His character traits show his attitude towards himself. Relationships with others have an effect on him as well. Even his experiences keep Charlie faithful and positive that he will get smart.
Theme is a message about life or human nature that the author writes about to get the reader to understand their work. Theme is important in writing because it helps the reader understand the story and better connect to main idea that the author is trying to convey. The two text that will be focused on are To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and various short stories from Eight Men by Richard Wright. To Kill A Mockingbird tells a story of the events that occur in the town of Maycomb County, Alabama, through the eyes of a young and curious girl named Jean Louise Finch (a.k.a Scout). Eight Men features eight short stories about eight men who encounter different situations.

A theme is a message about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader. The theme often tells or gives advice to the reader. Theme is important to the story because leads to an understanding of the characters motivations, teaches the reader an important lesson, and it connects all parts of the story.
Without them, the story would not make sense and would not be readable. The theme of the story is what hooks the reader. If you asked a reader in one word what the story was about, the theme would be what they would say. The characters are what makes a story believable. As the reader relates their own life to the characters in the story, they are drawn in to the storyline.
For an abundance of authors, the driving force that aids them in creation of a novel is the theme or number of themes implemented throughout the novel. Often times the author doesn’t consciously identify the theme they’re trying to present. Usually a theme is a concept, principle or belief that is significant to an author. Not only does the theme create the backbone of the story, but it also guides the author by controlling the events that happen in a story, what emotions are dispersed, what are the actions of characters, and what emotions are presented within each environment to engage the readers in many
The Elements of a Short Story Strongest short stories have detailed settings, engaging plot, creative characters, a noticeable conflict, and lastly a dramatic theme. Because a short story is shorter than a novel, the author has less time to develop these five elements. Therefore, when an author, such as William Faulkner, incorporates these into his story and develops their strength, he has created a great piece of work. William Faulkner concisely constructs “A Rose for Emily” using the five essential elements required to be considered a short story, he uses these elements equally to contribute to its development.
