Imagine a world where everybody is equal. No one is smarter than other people, none is stronger than other people and no one looks better than anybody else. That’s what the book Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is like. It is based in the year 2081 in the United States of America. The main characters in the book, George and Hazel Bergeron had a kid and they named him Harrison. The government took Harrison to jail when he was fourteen because they thought he was planning to overthrow the government. One day George and Hazel were watching tv and they interrupted and said that Harrison Bergeron had broken out of jail. He arrived at the performance that was on tv and was shot and killed by the handicapper general on live tv and his parents …show more content…
saw him die, then George's earbud made a loud sound and he forgot he son was just killed. There are many themes in this story but the one that stands out the most is, society will not operate correctly if everyone is equal. This is a significant topic because being different is a good thing and if everybody thought the same way society and the world would not be advanced as it is right now. Society is at the point it is because the different way people think and the way people do other things. Throughout the entire story, it shows that the people did not have any differences and they did not have any different ideas besides the fact that differences were a bad thing. A society that where everyone is equal in every way is a society that does not like competition or differences and will not be very advanced. The people in the short story are against people being different and do not want the competition of people being smarter or stronger or look better. "If I tried to get away with it," said George, "then other people would get away with it and pretty soon we'd be right back to the dark ages again, with everybody competing against everybody else. You wouldn't like that, would you?" "I'd hate it," said Hazel. The people in the short story are against people being different and do not want the competition of people being smarter or stronger or look better. Everybody's differences are what makes society work and get to the point where it is today. If people did not think differently or look different or were faster or stronger society would not be at the point it is now. Some people might say that the characters in the short story were just saying that they did not want competition like there was because the government was controlling the way they think and act. I believe that the government was not changing the way they think or act t was just changing the way people look, how smart they are and how strong they are not how they think. In the beginning and the middle of the story, the characters believe that they should be equal it is a good thing to be equal.
But I believe that the theme is that people differences are a good thing and they make society work right. That dance-it was nice," said Hazel. "Yap," said George. He tried to think a little about the ballerinas. They weren't really very good-no better than anybody else would have been. This shows that the people in the short story like that there is no competition and that everybody is equal. However, I believe that if everyone is equal there is no competition. If everyone in society is equal in every way and people do not have different ideas. Therefore Society will not work correctly and not be advanced because people do not have different ideas. "Well-maybe makes 'em real loud," said Hazel. "I think I'd make a good Handicapper General." "Good as anybody else," said George. This shows that the people the story believe that everybody would be just as good as other people with the same job, but that is not true. If everybody in society is equal they would all have a job that maybe they would not like or a job that they are not very good at. If society was not equal people would choose a job that they like and that they are good at so the people who work at that job do a good job and help society work or grow and become stronger. Some people might say that they might believe that they would be good at every job. If everybody being equally as good as the other in the same job means that society and the government will not work correctly, then the society in the short story is not working correctly because people do not get to use the skill sets they are good at in a job because they all have the same skill sets and are
equal. In the end of the short story, the characters believe that they should be equal and it is a good thing to be equal. But I believe that the theme is that people differences are a good thing and they make society work right. “The musicians scrambled back into their chairs, and Harrison stripped them of their handicaps, too. "Play your best," he told them, "and I'll make you barons and dukes and earls." The music began. It was normal at first-cheap, silly, false. But Harrison snatched two musicians from their chairs, waved them like batons as he sang the music as he wanted it played. He slammed them back into their chairs. The music began again and was much improved.” This shows that the musicians were afraid of playing their best because everybody was equal and they did not want to get in trouble for taking advantage of their skills. Another way this supports my claim is because they were scared because someone in their country was not equal like they are so they probably thought that Harrison Bergeron was going to attack them to help prove to the government that everybody should not be equal and that they should stand up against the government. “Harrison plucked the mental handicap from her ear, snapped off her physical handicaps with marvelous delicacy. Last, of all, he removed her mask. She was blindingly beautiful”. This shows that they do not want people looking the same because it might give people an advantage at certain jobs like actors or models or people who do commercials on television. The government doesn't want people to have different skill sets but they are stopping people from doing jobs that they could possibly be really good at. Some people might say that they are afraid of being different because it is the way that they live and grew up and they have been told that being different is a bad thing. But I believe that they want to be equal but people should actually want to be different, not equal. In the end, one can hope that society will never end up like it does in the book Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut. In the book, the society does not operate correctly because everyone is equal in every way. If you are smart you were an earbud that makes loud noises, if you are stronger you wear a sack full of weights, and if you are better looking you need to wear a mask. Everyone in the short story believes that being equal is a good thing and they do not want competition between people. There is a lot of themes in the story but the one that stands out the most is that society will not operate correctly if everyone is equal. This is a significant theme because if everybody is equal and they all have the same ideas and skills sets and no one is better than the other. So we can hope that society we live in never ends up like it does in this short story.
In a reality where the government strives to establish total equality, there are bound to be an immense amount of rebels and protesters who questions the newly established system. It is expected for the mass majority of individuals to be demeaning the so-called “equality” and demanding for change. However, this interpretation is far from the case in the fictional text “Harrison Bergeron”, where there appears to be daily brainwashing of the population, as well as law enforcement through putting bullets through people’s heads. The allegory attempts to depict a world where the government’s primary focus is to ensure that each and every individual is absolutely equivalent to one another. Taking place in 2081 America, there are several
Harrison Bergeron is a short story that creates many images and feelings while using symbols and themes to critique aspects of our lives. In the story, the future US government implements a mandatory handicap for any citizens who is over their standards of normal. The goal of the program is to make everyone equal in physical capabilities, mental aptitude and even outward appearance. The story is focused around a husband and wife whose son, Harrison, was taken by the government because he is very strong and smart, and therefore too above normal not to be locked up. But, Harrison’s will is too great. He ends up breaking out of prison, and into a TV studio where he appears on TV. There, he removes the government’s equipment off of himself, and a dancer, before beginning to dance beautifully until they are both killed by the authorities. The author uses this story to satire
Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s short story “Harrison Bergeron” was created during the time frame of the Civil Rights Movement and the Cold War and encompasses the definition of the word satire. Though the story itself is set in the distant future, the year 2081, one can see the influence of the past in this dark satirical portrayal of an American society. The author satirizes the very elements he was exposed to in his own environment and lifetime. Vonnegut mocks forced ideas of equality, power structures, and oppression, ideas that were prevalent and thriving in the atmosphere of his time of writing “Harrison Bergeron”.
“Harrison Bergeron” is a short fiction written by Kurt Vonnegut, the story is set in the year 2081, and it talks about a futuristic society where all individuals are equal. No one is cleverer, beautiful or stronger than the other, and if somebody is better than the others, they find themselves compelled by The United States Handicapper General to put on what they call “handicaps” to bring down their abilities to the most basic levels as the others. Throughout the story, Vonnegut expresses a bold and vigorous political and social criticism of some historical events in the US during the 1960s such as the Cold War and Communism, television and American Culture and Civil Rights Movement.
The pages of history have longed been stained with the works of man written in blood. Wars and conflicts and bloodshed were all too common. But why? What could drive a man to kill another? Many would say it is man’s evil nature, his greed, envy, and wrath. And certainly, they all have a roll in it. But in reality, it is something far less malevolent, at least at first. The sole reason why conflicts grow and spread comes from the individuality that every human cherishes so dearly. This can easily be shown in the story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, in which a society has been created where everyone of talent has been handicapped so they are not better than anyone else, all for the sake of equality. This text will show that Individuality
Ever since the beginning of time, Americans have been struggling to obtain equality. The main goal is to have a country where everyone can be considered equal, and no one is judged or discriminated against because of things out of their control. Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Plays with this idea of total equality in his futuristic short story, Harrison Bergeron. The setting is in 2081, where everyone is equal. No one is allowed to be better than anybody else. The government makes anyone who would be considered above average wear a transmitting device to limit their thoughts to twenty seconds at a time, which is considered average in this day. They also must wear bags of buckshot shackled to their necks to ensure no one can be stronger than anybody
The future entails breakthrough technology and unknown leadership. The harsh rules of the government in, Harrison Bergeron, causes the protagonist, Harrison Bergeron, to come up with the dangerous idea to overthrow the government which leads to the violent behavior of the antagonist Diana Moon Glampers. The author, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., uses character development to show the theme of the harsh government through the eyes of the protagonist, antagonist, and the foil characters Hazel and George Bergeron in this futuristic society.
The fictional short story by Kurt Vonnegut entitled Harrison Bergeron takes place in a dystopian future. Vonnegut chooses to make the story a satire in order to raise questions concerning how desirable social equality is within this world and how far society will go to achieve it. Like many dystopian, bleak, futuristic worlds, Vonnegut presents very clear aspects of how society is influenced by propaganda and the extent to how powerful a tool propaganda can be. After reading and analyzing this story, I will attempt to explain how Kurt Vonnegut’s life could have influenced his position on propaganda found within this short story. Furthermore, these elements will be matched to those common propaganda strategies discussed in this class and relate how this may impact any modern society.
“It was tragic, all right, but George and Hazel couldn't think about it very hard” (Vonnegut 3). Written in 1961, the classic “Harrison Bergeron” includes a meaningful story about society in the real world. The dystopian short story addresses how society might seem perfect, but deep down it has many issues that need to be solved. The story takes place in 2081, and 14 year old Harrison Bergeron is in jail for resisting the government. His parents, George and Hazel are controlled by the government with advanced technology. As shown in the quote, their thoughts are even restricted, along with the rest of the population as well. Kurt Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” critiques an illusion of a perfect society
The short story "Harrison Bergeron" by Kurt Vonnegut epitomizes what solid convictions can make people do and where this, thusly, can lead society to. The inventors of this general public firmly trust that the fundamental driver of friction is contrast among individuals. This solid conviction makes them take great measures to make everybody in the general public equivalent. As indicated by them, a definitive perfect world is the place each individual is equivalent. Be that as it may, as demonstrated further in the paper, their error of the expressions "fairness" and "joy" drives the general public well on a descending way to being an oppressed world.
Set one hundred and twenty years in the future, Kurt Vonnegut’s dystopian world short story “Harrison Bergeron” is about the outcome of what happens when the government takes over due to people in society pleading for equality. Ranging from physical looks to one’s intelligence, it seems that people are continually unsatisfied with themselves when compared to others. However, there is one boy who refuses to conform to the laws set in place by the Handicapper General. Harrison Bergeron is that boy. The story tells of his capture, rebellion, and his demise due to breaking free from the laws of equality. In whole, Kurt Vonnegut wants his readers to assess the issue of equality in society before the made up world of his story turns into reality.
Although the comparisons are well hidden, both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share similar qualities. They both deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. A second similarity is the struggle of competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly, both struggle with normality, and the fact that it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.

Never would I thought that we have a dystopian-like society in our world. Don’t know what a dystopia is? It is a society set in the future, typically portrayed in movies and books in, which everything is unpleasant. The novel Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut is a dystopian story of a fourteen-year-old boy named Harrison who grows up in a society that limits people’s individuality. When he is taken away from his parents, because of his strong idiosyncrasy, his parents do not even recall his presence because of the “mental handicaps” that the government forces onto them. Harrison eventually escapes from his imprisonment and tries to show others that they can get rid of the handicaps and be free. Though the government official, or Handicapper
