The Path of the Heart
Your heart can make you do crazy things. Antoine de Saint-Exupery expressed in his book, The Little Prince, that “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly.” By saying this, he means that you should always follow your heart and do what you believe. I agree because the wants of the heart truly represent your opinions and thoughts about things you come into contact with. In Twilight, written by Stephenie Meyer, the main character, Bella, falls in love with a vampire named Edward. In the beginning, they both try to fight their love for eachother, but in the end they both give into the wants of their hearts, and end up together. In the short story “Harrison Bergeron”, written by Kurt Vonnegut, Harrison does not agree

with the way society is. He was not the only one who felt this way, but he was one of the only ones brave enough to fight back and stand up for what he believed in. Harrison’s heart told him that what the government was doing to them was unjust and needed to be stopped. In both stories, the characters risk their own lives and others lives, to do what their hearts are telling them to. The first literary device in the book Twilight, is conflict.
Bella faces a lot of conflict throughout the book. When she first meets Edward, she is taken aback by him. She is very intrigued by the way he looks and acts and she instantly wants to know more about him. Bella and Edward conflict together a lot throughout the story because they can't decide if they want to pursue their love for each other because they know there is a big chance it will end badly for both of them. They end up deciding that they will ignore the consequences which just cause more problems for them. Bella explained in the book that she understood Edward thirsted for her blood, but her love for him overpowered that fear (195). Bella and Edward can't stay away from each other once they start dating, and this ends up being a big problem. Bella starts being hunted by a killer vampire, which causes Edward and his family to risk everything for her …show more content…
safety. In the short story, Harrison also faced conflict. Instead of living with his handicaps given to him, he decided to fight back, which caused him to be taken away from his parents. This caused problems for his parents because while they couldn't think about it for too long, they still missed their son (3). Harrison refused to accept the rules of the government and fought for what he knew was right. When Harrison escaped from jail, he got other people involved in his revolt. He influenced a ballerina to get up and take off her handicaps and he told the band to play good music. The government officials ended up having to go to the theatre to kill Harrison and the ballerina. If Harrison had never gotten the ballerina involved, she would have lived instead of being killed for doing the wrong thing. Although the whole situation could have been avoided if Harrison had not caused conflict with the government officials, he followed the beliefs of his heart because that's what he thought was right. Another literary element used in Twilight is the setting. The setting takes place in Forks, Pennsylvania. The setting plays a big part in the story because if Bella’s father had never lived in Forks, she would have never met Edward. If Bella had never met Edward, then the story would not be anywhere near as exhilarating as it is. The setting also makes it possible for the Cullens, who are vampires, to be outside more because the weather there is typically very gloomy (11). Another role the setting plays in the story is how Bella and Edward hang out in the open. Forks is also very foresty, which makes it easier for them to hang out, because they are more hidden from everyone. One of their first dates is in a forest and that date helps them get to know each other better, and it is when they realize how obsessed they are with each other. In the short story “Harrison Bergeron”, the theme plays a very important role in the story.
The theme of the story teaches you a lesson. Harrison stood up for what he believed in and showed the world he was not afraid of the government and he tried to convince the world how evil they were. When Harrison was in the theatre, he stood up for his beliefs. The theme of the story did not change because Harrison’s determination to prove the government evil never wavered, even when the government tried to take him down. Harrison was a very good example of not letting other people's thoughts bother you. Even though the government convinced the people that Harrison was extremely dangerous, he kept pursuing his goal of fixing the society (42).All through the time Harrison was in jail, he never changed his mind, or gave up on what he believed. He could have easily given in and gotten out of jail by admitting he was wrong, but he stuck with what he believed and never gave in to the
government. As stated by Antoine de Saint-Exupery “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly”. I agree with this quote because if you follow your heart, you will end up doing the right thing and what you really believe in without other factors playing into your decisions. While using your brain is smart, there are many outside sources that can alter your decisions and conflict with the way you look at things. Both of the stories use conflict as literary elements, but they also use different literary elements. Meyer uses setting as a factor that plays into Edward and Bella’s interactions and Vonnegut uses the theme of the story to teach the reader a lesson. Even if Bella did not realize, she followed her heart and ended up with the love of her life. Harrison followed his heart, and even though it ended his life, it sent a very powerful message to the reader about being willing to do anything for what you believe in.
Harrison Bergeron is a short story that has a deep meaning to it. To begin with, the short story Harrison Bergeron was made in 1961 and is written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. The whole short story is set in the far future of 2081. 2081 is a time where everybody is finally equal and when the government finally has full control over everyone. If you aren't equal you would have to wear handicaps to limit your extraordinary strength and smarts. As the story progresses, Harrison Bergeron is trying to send a message about society.
Have you ever wondered what life would be if everyone was equal? Well, in the year 2081, the government made everyone equal with handicaps. In the story “Harrison Bergeron”, the government makes people with special talents or abilities wear handicaps. I agree with the claim,”Everyone was not truly equal in “Harrison Bergeron”. Some reasons why I believe that this statement wasn’t true is that the handicaps don’t take away your abilities, handicaps are not useful, and it is not fair for the people with abilities to wear handicaps. Everyone is truly equal in “Harrison Bergeron” because it made average people and below average people feel equal to the higher and better people.
The world is divided up into numerous things: Countries, states, cities, communities, etc. However, when looking at the big scope of things, one can group the vast amount of people into a society. This society is where the majority lie in the scheme of things - in other words, the common people. Individuals do exist in this society, but they are scarce in a world of conformism. Society’s standards demands an individual to conform, and if the individual refuses they are pushed down by society.
The handicaps are to people as the cage is to the bird. This simile describes how Caged Bird and Harrison Bergeron are alike. Harrison Bergeron and Caged Bird are very alike in many reasons. They both reference limitations on freedom. In Caged Bird the limitation is that the bird is in the cage and cannot fly or go wherever it pleases. In Harrison Bergeron the limitations are all the handicaps. In Harrison Bergeron there are limitations to the citizens. These are called handicaps. When you are more capable at something then other people are then you receive handicaps that limit your abilities so that everyone is equal. Some handicaps are earpieces that stop you from thinking with a ringing sound, masks for those that have superior beauty, and
The future entails breakthrough technology and unknown leadership. The harsh rules of the government in, Harrison Bergeron, causes the protagonist, Harrison Bergeron, to come up with the dangerous idea to overthrow the government which leads to the violent behavior of the antagonist Diana Moon Glampers. The author, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., uses character development to show the theme of the harsh government through the eyes of the protagonist, antagonist, and the foil characters Hazel and George Bergeron in this futuristic society.
Harrison Bergeron is a hero to society. He is a hero because he was the only person willing to take off his handicap. Bergeron was a brave person. No one else was brave enough to try to be unique. Everyone was following what they were told to never questioning it, but Bergeron wasn't. He wants to discover new things. Yes he might have been scaring people, but they had no reason to be scared. They could have been helping and joining instead of being scared and rebelling from him.
Although the comparisons are well hidden, both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share similar qualities. They both deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. A second similarity is the struggle of competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly, both struggle with normality, and the fact that it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.
“Is He Serious? And Other Ironies” During the short story you assume that Harrison is going to succeed because when you were younger all the story’s you read had happy endings so you assume that all stories will have happy endings, however, at the end of this story Harrison gets shot and everyone forgets what happens and never
A small glimmer of hope in an imperialistic world is only taken away in order to ensure equivalence in an imperfect society. Harrison Bergeron is a classic sociological tale written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. that is based on the sociological aspect of everyone being equal - not one individual could be above another. This short story focuses on the idea of symbolism by using masks and handicaps to force the social norm of being the same while foreshadowing the courage of being unique in a seemingly perfect world, all while displaying irony through the way in which our society runs today. This story relates to today’s society in that both are alike in that individuals want to break free from societies constraints of social norms.
Just like in any relationship, the concept of trust is an effectual factor in starting and developing a healthy and romantic relationship. In the movie, when Edward and Bella had a biological class together this aspect drew the two together, and the trust factor emerged at the first sight. The scent of Bella had an intense influence on Edward, for he is a vampire in nature. Moreover, it seemed as if Bella was the one Edward was waiting for a long time. Edward left school for a few days because the scent of Bella was too strong for him, and upon his return to school, he avoided stating the truth of why he was away from school. Edward stated, “He had to get out of the town for personal reasons and just in few days” (Blasingame et al. 57).
Harrison was the one person that refused to be different, he didn't want equality among people. He thought it was good everyone was different. If you lived like this and happened to be the few that were above average, he would be a hero to you, because no one wants to walk around all day hearing loud piercing sounds that made you forget everything. The definition of a hero is a person who is admired for courage, in this case Harrison had a lot of courage. He did not care that the government would kill him for resisting, he refused to wear the big bulky metal box and have his memory erased. He wanted to stand up for every single person and show them how the government was controlling them. Harrison was a true hero for putting himself in danger just to save others. Harrison was killed showing people that it was perfectly okay to be above average and not be mediocre or the same as everyone else. Harrison stuck up for the people afraid of the government, he gave them a voice. A hero can be anyone you look up
Harrison Bergeron was locked in the cell for having the knowledge George plans. He was locked in the jail for weeks. Finally Harrison Bergeron was realised from the cell from a lawyer, a friend of his. Harrison thought to himself that if George was gonna make the world of his own, Harrison doesn’t want the sociality to be equal thinking to himself there would be no indinty. Harrison made a decision, why not just kill George. Harrison slowly tried to get Tom and Jerry to help him with his plan. It was to get the people their freedom back. George had set up a meeting next week. The meeting god Harrison the idea to start there. A week later, George showed his worker his idea it was “the mind control”. Harrison waited for the time to come, George
