Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad “I freed thousands of slaves, and could have freed thousands more, if they had known they were slaves.” (History.com) This Harriet Tubman quote is a great representation of the kind of person she was. Harriet Tubman was a great woman, not only did she escape slavery; she went back several times to save more people. She conducted the Underground Railroad and did great things that have changed our history in one of its darkest times in our history. Being a slave was not easy but that didn’t stop her. Becoming a slave was terrible; someone was either born a slave or kidnapped. When slavery first started, white Europeans went into Africa and kidnapped African Americans. As the years went on this process became too difficult for the Europeans, so they established hundred of trading station along Africa’s West Coast. Local African rulers and black merchants delivered the captured people to the posts and them sell as slaves. Slaves were then transported to the Americas on a journey called the middle passage which lasted about six weeks. These ships were very unsanitary and cramped often carrying three hundred slaves. Once onboard the ship, men and women were stripped naked and shackled two-by-two. They could either be packed loosely or tight. Either way the ship had terrible hygiene, often nowhere to go to the bathroom. Also the slaves were hardly given any food, so many of the slaves went hungry. These factors contributed to many suicide attempts while onboard. After a slave got off the ship, the binding began. Families would be split up most likely never to see each other ever again. It pushed not only slaves but white men for another way of life, an equal one. It helped shape our society to what it is today, even if it took over a hundred years. People might think that what would motivate anyone to take all that pain and misery to one’s self in order to help other people. Harriet Tubman was an African American lady that took upon several roles throughout her lifetime just like a protester, philanthropist, and a Union Spy in the time of the American civil war. The Underground Railroad was used by many black slaves who escaped to freedom, conductors who helped free slaves were great people who took many risks. The days when slaves thought they could never make it or when a conductor's house was the best feeling in the whole world helped slaves not lose hope. Slaves may have not had a full education, but they knew they didn't deserve this, “Some slaves chose to rebel because of their lack of rights and the dominant power places on them...they received physical punishments, physical abuse and no right to an education” (The Underground Railroad Wksht). Many slaves were soon fed up with the abuse they were received all based on the color of their skin and background so they decided to resist and flee. More than hundreds were lucky enough to seek help from conductors on the Underground Railroad. Men and women of each color worked in unison to free slaves, they are the reason to why so many slaves could breathe in the fresh air and walk without any chains. They broke laws, but they did a good deed and the many bounties on their heads and the suspicions never hindered their determination to bring slaves to freedom. One conductor could not bring a handful of slaves to freedom in the North or especially Canada without the high risk of being caught. It took the whole team of conductors to bring slaves to freedom. Many conductors who took slaves out of the plantations and started them on their journeys, used disguises to return for others and help slaves at least get a day without whips or chains. Conductors were able to walk freely, but they are the ones who decided for themselves to help the men, woman, and all the children who wanted a new life. Throughout a 10-year span, Tubman made more than 20 trips down to the South and lead over 300 slaves from bondage to freedom. Perhaps the most shocking fact about Tubman’s journeys back and forth from the South was that she “never lost a single passenger.”

They break that law knowing that they might go to jail, but to them it is worth it. Harriet Tubman’s involvement in Civil Disobedience was done to influences she chose to participate in Civil Disobedience to protest slavery, and she did achieve success using the controversial method of standing up for what she strongly believes to be right.
