The poets I choose are Claude McKay (1889-1948) who wrote the poem “If We Must Die” and Langston Hughes (1902-1967) who wrote the poem “Jazz Band in a Parisian Cabaret”. Each Poet had a really important role and importance in the Harlem Renaissance. Claude McKay is a poet who was born in Jamaica and left for the U.S in 1912. McKay generally published in white avant-garde magazines and occasionally in magazines like The Crisis. His Poem “If We Must Die” was inspired by the race riots that exploded in the summer and fall of 1919 in a number of cities in both the North and South. His poem triggers the violent episodes of white people attacking them, but getting stunned

Claude McKay helped to launch the burst of creative energy that was the Harlem Renaissance. Also Langston Hughes a leader of the Harlem Renaissance famously published, “Negro was in vogue” which mean, “Harlem was in vogue” as a sign of gaining popularity and becoming a mainstream for jazz and poetry. At twenty-two years of age in 1924 he had gone to Paris seeking a freedom he could not find at home. Langston Hughes was one of the many African American who had been drawn to Paris by reports of black soldiers who had served in the World War I; in so call Negro division like the 92nd and 93rd infantries. And soon he was writing poems inspired by Jazz rhythms he was hearing played by the African American bands in the clubs where worked as a busboy and dishwasher. When in Harlem, Hughes quickly became one of the most powerful voices; His poem “Jazz Band in a Parisian Cabaret” narrates the lives of his people, capturing the inflections, and cadences of their speech. In Claude McKay “If we must die” the primary theme is death, but not on how you’re going to die, but how you’re going to face death in certain ways. We get the idea that the speaker of "If We Must Die" isn 't thinking about death in the theoretical sense; he 's actually facing it. It 's not a question of whether he will die or what will happen when he dies, it about how he will meet death. “Pressed to the wall, Dying, But fighting back!” and “ though far outnumbered, let us show us brave, and for their thousand blows deal one deathblow!” show how they will fight back before death occurs as a sign of influence.
Also in Langston Hughes “Jazz Band in a Parisian Caberet” the main theme is he touts the universal appeal of jazz to convey ideas of national unity. Langston says, “Play that thing, Jazz Band! Play it for the lords and ladies, for the whores and gigolos…” he is talking about everyone as a whole in unity in he plays music for them and sings to them from jazz

The "New Negro," the Black writers in 1920/30, tried to get out of the dominant white assimilation and practice their own tradition and identity in autonomous and active attitude. In virtue of their activities, the Harlem Renaissance became the time of sprouting the blackness. It offered the life of the black as the criterion to judge how well the democracy practices in America and to weigh the measure of the dream of America. Their vitality and artistic spirit, and dreams were so impressive that the Harlem of the 1920s has never been eluded out from the memory of American (Helbling 2).

In the introduction to The Portable Harlem Renaissance Reader, David Levering Lewis states the Harlem Renaissance was not a cohesive movement, but a constructed and forced phenomenon that was “institutionally encouraged and directed by leaders of the national civil rights establishment for the paramount purpose of improving race relations.” (Lewis, xiii) However, after researching many influential artists, politicians, and orators of the time, I must disagree. While, yes, the movement of an entire cultural and racial awakening can only be seen as a phenomenon and the movement itself was by no means cohesive, these powerful men and women needed no institutionalized encouragement. Each of their works were their own with diverse ideas and methods, yet somehow, came together to form an interconnected goal within the movement.

Poetry during the Harlem Renaissance was the way that African Americans made sense out of everything, good or bad, that “contextualized” their lives. The Harlem Renaissance, also known as the Black Renaissance or New Negro Movement, was a cultural movement among African Americans. It began roughly after the end of World War 1 in 1918. Blacks were considered second class citizens and were treated as such.
The Harlem Renaissance was a time of racism, injustice, and importance. Somewhere in between the 1920s and 1930s an African American movement occurred in Harlem, New York City. The Harlem Renaissance exalted the unique culture of African-Americans and redefined African-American expression. It was the result of Blacks migrating in the North, mostly Chicago and New York. There were many significant figures, both male and female, that had taken part in the Harlem Renaissance. Ida B. Wells and Langston Hughes exemplify the like and work of this movement.
As it grew in influence and popularity, Jazz brought many young people together. It was such a social movement it brought mixed young people together to dance “The Charleston, The Cakewalk, The Black Bottom, The Flea Hop.” Since Jazz was such a influential and persuasive musical style. It had its time as a great social leveler and unifier. It brought together African Americans and Americans, in a love of fast, rhythmic music, which was multiplied through the radio and the recording industry. “What a crowd! All classes and colors met face to face, ultra aristocrats, bourgeois, communists, park avenue galore, publishers, broadway celebs, and harlemites giving each other the once over.” Jazz became attractively to popular Jazz Bands, it traveled widely playing all kinds of venues from restaurants, to dance halls, and even nightclubs. During the 1920's and 30’s, America went through a period of astonishing artistic creativity, the majority of which was concentrated in one neighborhood of New York City, Harlem. The creators of this period of growth in the arts were African-American writers and other artists. Langston Hughes is considered to be one of the most influential writers of the period know as the Harlem Renaissance. With the use of blues and jazz Hughes managed to express a range of different themes all revolving around the Negro. He played a major role in the Harlem Renaissance, helping to create and express black culture. He also wrote of political views and ideas, racial inequality and his opinion on religion. I believe that Langston Hughes’ poetry helps to capture the era know as the Harlem Renaissance.
Occurring in the 1920’s and into the 1930’s, the Harlem Renaissance was an important movement for African-Americans all across America. This movement allowed the black culture to be heard and accepted by white citizens. The movement was expressed through art, music, and literature. These things were also the most known, and remembered things of the renaissance. Also this movement, because of some very strong, moving and inspiring people changed political views for African-Americans. Marcus Garvey and his organization, the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), represent the largest mass movement in African-American history. Proclaiming a black nationalist "Back to Africa" message, Garvey and the UNIA established 700 branches in thirty-eight states by the early 1920s. While chapters existed in the larger urban areas such as New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, Garvey's message also reached into small towns across the country. Segregation and racism in the 1920s was mundane for the average African American, but as they put that aside they were respected by many whites. The rise of the jazz age was due to the prohibition of alcohol. People were selling alcohol illegally and many African Americans began playing music known as the jazz age. Many white folks came to watch famous African musicians play in secret clubs called the cotton club. In the 1920s when there was prohibition and racism, many African Americans had to deal with discrimination, and segregation between the whites. During that time the Klu Klux Klan population was at an all-time high. Being colored was dangerous because the KKK members were out to hunt for people who weren’t white. Africans were driven out of the South from the whites and also the bot weevil. They were forced to migrate to the north. These areas had poverty. Luckily, African Americans could overcome this hatred by creating a new age called the Harlem Renaissance. Making the North well known for its gargantuan transformation and making it a success. The connection towards Gatsby is that Gatsby had hired a band that played jazz. This came from African Americans as jazz influenced many people throughout the world. The Harlem Renaissance was an era of where African Americans became famous, well known, and respected for their music and literature.
The Harlem Renaissance was a time period during which the black culture of New York, primarily Harlem, was involved in a movement through which, using literature and intellect, they attempted to raise pride amongst themselves and attain equal status with those that oppressed them. The Harlem Renaissance refers to a prolific period of unique works of African-American expression from about the end of World War I to the beginning of the Great Depression. Although it is most commonly associated with the literary works produced during those years, the Harlem Renaissance was much more than a literary movement; similarly, it was not simply a reaction against and criticism of racism. The Harlem Renaissance inspired, cultivated, and, most importantly, legitimated the very idea of an African-American cultural consciousness. Concerned with a wide range of issues and possessing different interpretations and solutions of these issues affecting the Black population, the writers, artists, performers and musicians of the Harlem Renaissance had one important commonality: "they dealt with Black life from a Black perspective." This included the use of Black folklore in fiction, the use of African-inspired iconography in visual arts, and the introduction of jazz to the North.[i] In order to fully understand the lasting legacies of the Harlem Renaissance, it is important to examine the key events that led to its beginnings as well as the diversity of influences that flourished during its time.
