Charles Spurgeon, the Prince of Preachers, once said, “It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.” This past year I decided to challenge myself and those around me to be happy. Happiness can mean miscellaneous things to each of us, but at the end of the day, I believe we are in control of our own happiness. Until this year, I had never really given a thought about happiness. Sure I sensed it all around me and felt it all throughout my life, but I never thought it was something I could decide for myself until now. One of the my most cleansing cures to happiness is the connection with nature. Studies have shown that a human’s emotional connection to nature is widely distinct from all other physiological connections in their lives. If I had to choose anywhere to be in this moment, I have no doubt in my mind I would be in Colorado, trekking across the Rocky Mountain National Park and breathing in the crisp mountain air. Self love is hard and it is one of the hardest things I’ve struggled with my whole life. I have always had this thought in the back of my mind of how I visualise myself, both on the inside and outside. I mentioned before how we are the generation of social media and how that gives us endless access into other people’s lives that are glamorous and enchanting. Even I find myself constantly comparing their lives to mine, wishing I could live in their life just for a day. Comparison greatly impacts the self love process because there will always be someone prettier, smarter, more successful, but I’m learning that if I only focus on that aspect of life, I will never improve upon myself. If I cannot love myself, I’m not able to love my family, friends, and others who deserve all the love and support I can give. If I can’t accept and love myself, then I’m not able to give them the best version of who I
Setting your goal and being determined or even being desperate to find happiness is dangerous and is risking your happiness. If and when you do not achieve happiness, you lose all of it and even become unhappy. Focus your mind on something other than your own happiness and you will achieve true happiness. Darrin M. McMahon says to “...Have dinner with your family or walk in the park with friends...put in some good hours t the office or at your favorite charity, temple or church. Work on your jump shot or your child’s model trains. With luck, you’ll find happiness by the by.” So instead of saying “Happy New Year”, Darrin M. McMahon says “‘Don’t have a happy new year!’”, because “Those only are happy who have their minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness” says John Stuart Mill.
Have you noticed that we feel a powerful desire to connect with nature during difficult times? Whether we are injured, depressed or sad our inclination towards nature increases. Patients in hospitals recover faster if they are in a room with a nice view. Why? Because nature is so pure and powerful that can restore our spirits and heal our bodies and minds. The beauty of nature has been praised in art, poetry, writings and films. Naturalists, poets and writers have documented the many benefits of spending time in nature. "Calypso Borealis" by Muir and "I wandered Lonely as a Cloud" by Wordsworth are two great pieces of literature where our hearts are filled with an indescribable emotion. John Muir and William Wordsworth express their relationship
Many have said nature is the best medicine for the soul. Have you ever noticed the simple bliss and purity nature holds? Never competing, never degrading, never giving up the purity it holds. Nature can keep its blissful purity untroubled in the moment not convicted by what all society has brought into this world. Furthermore, many find nature as their safe place, the one place they can go too and no one can interfere with their happiness. John Muir and William Wordsworth noticed
As Walt Disney once said, “Happiness is a state of mind. It’s just according to the way you look at things.” Walt Disney is one of the best known founders for a motion - picture production company. This infamous and plausible man is among the many who support the claim that happiness can be achieved in an assortment of ways by contenting both adults and children. Maanvi Singh’s , “You Can Buy Happiness, If It’s An Experience,” Caitlin Kenney’s “Study: ‘High Incomes Don’t Bring You Happiness’” and ABC News’ “Can We Cultivate Our Own Happiness?” assert how one can achieve happiness. Genuine happiness can only be attained if one truly accepts what their lives present them with. Even though several beliefs claim that money is the key to stimulating
There is this feeling we all experience when we step away from the chaos of rushing cars, infrastructure, and artificial lights, and we step into nature. Some describe it as bliss, comfort, excitement, pleasure or just pure happiness. This is the answer to the question Paul Bloom asks “Why should we care about nature?” in his article “Natural Happiness.” Paul goes through this process in which he uncovers the fact that “real natural habitats provide significant sources of pleasure for modern humans”, regardless of our need for food, clean water, and air. There are 3 main arguments that Paul makes in this article that I find particularly interesting, they include: “Our hunger for the natural is everywhere. In many regards our species has already kissed nature goodbye, and we are better off for it. There is a considerable mismatch between
The studies given as examples and discussion focuses on teenagers and young adults, but includes anyone is struggling to find happiness. Evidence to Support Thesis: Point 1: The level of well-being is emphasized as more people continue to lose track of what makes them happy. Shawn Anchor is reminding people to capture the essence of simple contentment and asking his audience to think about what they value. Anchor’s book provides seven principles that involve having an open mind to becoming happier. Anchor includes other research studies as evidence to his claims throughout the book.
The Dalai Lama has said "Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions." It has been my experience that the most consistent, and reliable path to happiness is to show others kindness. When the world becomes too much to bear, and the trials of life seem insurmountable, an act of kindness can revitalize the spirit. To give kindness unconditionally is not only a way to bring light and joy into the life of someone else, it also brings light into the life of the giver. To have a heart full of kindness for others is impossible without first having an endless amount of kindness and forgiveness for yourself, because you cannot give something you do not have. It is the authors humble belief that we all
Contrary to belief, genuine happiness is very rarely found at the bottom of a shopping basket or on the leather seats of a brand new car. Often we hear the cliché saying “Money can’t buy happiness” but this is in fact true. Whilst the elation and delight brought from finally owning a wanted item is extraordinary, you must remind yourself that your happiness should not become dependant upon your ownership of this item. Being happy is not something you can purchase from a shop or car dealership, it is the way you take on life. Unfortunately, happiness does not have its own aisle at shops and never will.
Self-love helps build the foundation of who we really are so if this foundation is not solid, life can feel shaky at times. When we truly start to love ourselves, things begin to fall into place for us and life itself begins to feel truly beautiful which is the way life was intended to be felt.
Happiness is a feeling that humans naturally desire. Without it, one feels incomplete. In this generation, happiness has taken on a definition by how we are presented to one another. It is measured by how much money we have, how famous we are, or the things we possess. When in reality, none of these things guarantee a happy life. Happiness is something that cannot be bought with money, but rather, it must be found, earned, sought after. Each and every one of us has our own list of things that we consider to make us happy. However, happiness shines brightest through the relationships we create, and the goals we make for ourselves to strive after. Along with these two essential sources, we then can mix and match those things in life that we enjoy to create our own unique formula for happiness.
Throughout my life, I have learned to see that happiness is not such an inaccessible dream. Although its notion varies from one person to another, happiness is often times only one inch away. Some people will experience happiness in the pursuit of it. Some will find it in sacrificing themselves for greater goals. Others will find it in people’s company, in lust or in drugs. There is no recipe for success or happiness, and it is only up to us to define what we want from life, and how we want to get it. The only certain thing is that it is never too late for anybody to achieve their dreams, to make peace with their feelings, and ultimately, to be happy.
But in this debate, one question still raises its head - What is happiness? Happiness is not actually leading a luxurious life, but the luxury of living a life. Happiness is not actually about expanding your business, but it lies in expanding the horizons of life. Happiness is not having a meal in the most famous restaurant, but having it with your most beloved family. It does not lie in attending honorable parties, but to attend a party with honor.
everyone at a time or two, sometimes even more. Because of this our world is suffering
When I was very young, my parents always told me that I must study hard, so that l would make a lot of money and could have a happy life. To my parents, happiness means a bright future and money. But now that I am grown up, in keep thinking about what happiness is; my recognition of happiness is very different from my parents. In my eye, the meaning of happiness is very simple, it could be the small things which makes me satisfied. When I make programs in my study, I make my goal come true, I am so proud of myself. It is a happy moment for me. When I stay with my family, I talk to them and they are willing to listen to my words, we communicate happily, I am so happy it. Well, happiness is such easy for me to touch, because I am so easy to be satisfied.
