“Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything.” – Plato Music acts as an integral part of our being: defining us as we develop our own musical identity through our tastes, talents, passions and social standings within this area. In the case of the cannibalistic serial killer, Dr Hannibal Lecter, it is classical music which plays a fundamental role in the portrayal and identity of this sinisterly sophisticated fictional character. The infamous persona of Hannibal Lecter is one which is renowned among many due to his sheer complexity: the character’s refined taste contradicted by his acts of utter brutality. As stated in an analytical article …show more content…
The study carried out by The New York University conveyed that, “Contrary to the movie trope epitomised by Alex in A Clockwork Orange and Hannibal Lecter in the Silence of the Lambs, psychopaths are no fonder of classical music than anyone else, though they do appear to have other musical preferences.” Researchers have stated that the results of this study are not yet absolute as it needs to be carried out on an even larger scale, however, the results that they did obtain concluded that psychopaths may have more of a fondness for rap music rather than classical music: ‘No Diggity’ by Blackstreet and Eminem’s ‘Lose Yourself’ proving most popular among individuals with high psychopathy scores. Although this research suggests more of a correlation between rap music and psychopaths, the persona of Hannibal Lecter that has been created and we have all grown to fear would simply not be as terrifying with a love of rap music. Perhaps, the serious element which classical music carries allows us to take the character more seriously and, thereby, evokes a natural response of fear towards Lecter – an obvious intention of his
Both in the ‘Serial’ podcast by Sarah Koenig and the ‘Making a murderer’ docudrama directed by Laura Ricchardi, use music to cause doubt in the audience’s mind whether to position the person on trial as innocent. Similarly, where Koenig uses music to support ideas and cause doubt in the audience, Ricchardi uses music in accompany with videos and re-enactments so the audience can infer whether Steven is innocent or guilty. Koenig structures the music in her podcast and uses it to appeal to the audience in a way so the audience can infer whether Adnan is innocent or guilty. Koenig uses music to transfer from the interview with Adnan to her narration. This is done because Koenig has found the important information of Adnan’s whereabouts at the time of the murder and positions the audience to view him as innocent.
Music and Murder as a title for this documentary is very peculiar in that it hints that the two themes go together, many would see such a title as a paradox and that if rehabilitation was the only issue Music after Murder would be a more suitable title, however the emotional maturing through music is important in the documentary. Music recorded by the prisoners is played throughout the documentary, this attempts to give the viewer insight into the emotions felt by the musicians. The music is described by one of the prisons music teachers as “coming from the heart”, because we have not discovered the crimes that the prisoners have committed the music attempts to draw on feelings of sympathy from the viewer for the men. Much of the documentary is left to periods of the men’s music; these periods are an expression of emotion by which the notion of humanity and a second chance is put forward.
Is music powerful enough to incite antisocial and violent behavior? According Johnson, Jackson and Gatto’s study on the deleterious effects of exposure to rap music, subjects in the violent exposure conditions (rap music) expressed greater acceptance of violence. Subjects in the violent exposure condition also reported a higher probability that they would engage in violence (Johnson). Music plays an i...
The beginning of Hannibal is very powerful and very moving. The actions of the rogue Nazis were so inhuman that it destroyed a young man’s mind. The mere thought of eating his beloved sister had to be horrifying. It is not difficult to imagine his revulsion, his unimaginable pain. As a person looking in at the tragedy caused by war, it can be imagined that if the mind is not
If one were to look back into the world’s history, one would find that an important and consistent element is the world of music. Music has presented itself in various forms throughout its spread and through our identification of its magical realm, people have been fortunate enough to come across a means of relation. Whether it is blues and reggae or rap and pop rock, there is music out there for everyone. Music can serve as a stabilizer for some, a relaxant to others, and to many a form of inspiration.
It is difficult to show the effects of music on the individual, but it is easy to see how the individual chooses genres of music based on mood. The soldiers in Iraq, for instance, listened to a song by the band Drowning Pool titled, “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor,” over the speakers in their tanks. After listening to the song it would be easy to see that they didn’t just choose the song because they thought it pertained to their current situation. The song is loud, fast, and hard. The song fueled the soldiers. I don’t think that it made them into bloodthirsty savages, but I do think that it pumped them up with adrenaline. Walk into any random Gold’s Gym and I’m sure you will not hear classical or new age music, but instead some sort of rock. David in the Bible played music to soothe Saul. Due to David’s harp and voice Saul calmed down and fell asleep. This is present even in today’s society. After work, school, or any other long, exhausting event, it isn’t uncommon for people to go home and put on some soothing music in order to cure them of their horrible day.
In a article “Rap Music's Psychological Effects”, written by Suite 101, studies were conducted to assess how listening to hip hop effected teenagers and young adults, and found that overall, that listening to rap music does not cause aggressive or deviant behavior. Instead hip-hop music did cause violent actions, particularly abuse against women. Additionally, those who watched either violent or non-violent hip-hop videos were more inclined to express materialistic attitudes and favors, potentially acquiring possessions through crime. Studies also found th...
There is still a game of Hannibal Lecter . Its a kind of innocence contrasts with the murderous instinct . Aristocratic manners manners have become psychopathic esthete that beauty and art are treated as part of the filling every bit of human life . Sophistication is the medium in an intellectual sense Lecetera . Why do people eat ? This magnum opus of aesthetics. Beauty can be created , but let's create a beautiful man ! Let the art is the human body itself , which is subjected to artistic treatment . Man becomes work , and for Hannibal this seems to be the fulfillment of artistic emploi . Aestheticism pervades everything, everywhere , has created a master piece ..
The idea that music leads its listeners to participate in deviant acts can be left up to each individual’s opinion. The truth is, is that there is not sufficient research to prove or disprove whether music has a strong influence, if any, on the listener’s choices to engage in deviant behaviors. One thing for certain is that music can influence a population’s appearance and culture. Whether or not music causes listeners to be deviant, music will continue to be produced and played around the world.
Music is one of the most fantastical forms of entertainment. Its history stretches all the way from the primitive polyrhythmic drums in Africa to our modern day pop music we listen to on our phones. It has the ability to amaze us, to capture our attention and leave us in awe. It soothes the hearts of billions, and it is so deeply rooted in my life that it has touched my heart as well. Everyday I walk to the beat of the song stuck in my head and hum along to the melody. For me, to listen to music be lifted into the air by the hands of your imagination and float around for a while. You forget about your worries, your troubles and find peace within the sound. Every chapter in my life is attached with a song. Every time I listen to a certain song, thoughts of my past come flooding back
“Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music.” These were the words of Sergei Rachmaninoff, a Russian composer and pianist who was very influential in the twentieth century. Sergei’s perception of music was accurate because he understood the impact and significance music can have. Everybody knows what music is and they all have heard a form of it but most people underestimate the value and power music has in our everyday lives. Whether they know it or not music plays a vital role in the lives of people today. Music is a very efficient tool that influences and assists people, it plays a huge part in today’s society, and it had done so much for me as an individual.
“Music gives a soul to Universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”
As a musician, I can appreciate all forms of music as legitimate vehicles of artistic expression, not simply attaching aesthetic value to what I prefer. True art forms should express the ugly as well as the beautiful in human expression. However, if the art form explicitly expresses a message of debasement, hatred, or violence without just cause, then I question the validity of the message. A counter argument might claim that violent messages expressed through music are just a reflection of conditions that already exist. Violence directed towards women is an option that misdirects the causes from where true powerlessness derive...
Music, a form of art, made up of unique and special sounds containing elements of pitch and rhythm can powerfully soothe one’s soul. Firstly, there are different types of music, and each has its own features. These sounds and features are what I admire in music because to me it creates a new form of communication to one’s consciousness. It stimulates our mind and gives it a sense of harmony and peace through the hardships that life poses for us. As a kid, I would always listen to music from any genre, deciding which genre would complement me the most as I grew older. In middle school, I remember going on the computer and finding a website/program where I could make my own beats. From that day on, I spent countless of hours each day making sure the tune sounded proper and pleasurable for my ears. At first, it wasn’t good, but eventua...
Music is an essential part of life because of the expression it allows people to have, its entertainment, and its therapeutic ways for the world.
