That’s My Jam!
When I listen to music, I do so much more than just hear it. Every song is a story that I experience and let flow through me. If ever there was a song that triggered the strongest reaction from me, it would be “Handlebars” by Flobots. I feel as though that song is a masterpiece, a moving work of art that gets my heart pounding and my mind racing. “Handlebars” is a song I can relate to, a song that improves my mood, and even inspires me.
Firstly, I’d like to point out that I am not a fan of rap music. I prefer the soft and warm melodies of folk music but I make an exception for “Handlebars.” When I hear that song, I can’t help but apply the concepts in the lyrics to my own experiences. For example, I can remember the first time
I learned how to “Ride my bike with no handlebars.” It was an exhilarating experience, balancing upon that steel frame and two slim tires with nothing but my balance keeping me safe. I felt as though I could do anything, anything at all. Like “Look at me, look at me, hands in the air like it's good to be alive!” That is what I believe to be the message being conveyed in this song. I am a very grumpy person. My own mother likes to call me “Grandpa” because I wake up early and read the news and heaven help he who disturbs my morning peace. This all changes the instant I listen to “Handlebars.” As soon as I hear the signature plucking of the violin in the beginning of the song, I am transported to somewhere else. Somewhere I can do anything I so desire. It is such a wonderful feeling to have meer music whisk me away as that song does. I admit, I can’t help but smile to myself when I picture all of the wondrous thing the song makes me feel like I can do. “Handlebars” is nothing short of inspiring. While the whole of the song is a dark, grim, and somewhat anarchic, I choose to hear only a part of the message. The message that states anyone can do anything they set their mind to. This song inspires me, reminds me that I have the power to shape my life however I please. “I can do anything I want cause look, I can keep rhythm with no metronome...I can do anything with no assistance cause I can lead a nation with a microphone.” Those lines inspire me, motivate me to take pride in my abilities both known and even unknown to me. I know that I, too, can do anything I want, even lead a nation with a microphone. That is why I feel this song to be truly beautiful despite the dark tone it takes in later verses, because it makes me feel so free. When I say “Handlebars” is my jam it is a gross understatement. It is my anthem, my dream, my escape. I hope that others can relate to, cheer up with, and even be inspired by this wonderful work of art by the Flobots as I do.
There are a lot of songs to choose form when there is songs that break down norms and one that reinforce some. There are songs that mean nothing. Great songs always have a hidden mean behind them even if when listen to them we do not know what they are.
It has always been argued that nature, nurture, or both affect human development. In Flobots’ “Handlebars”, the lead singer answers the question of whether nature, nurture, or both affect human development by showing two best friends who went their separate paths and turned into two completely different people. The music video and song shows and tells the experiences that shaped both friends and ultimately caused the demise of one, if not, both of them. However, within this song and video the power of the government, namely the American government and politics is criticized; also power plays a big role in what occurs within the video. In Flobots’ “Handlebars,” the use of illustrative lyrics, reflective instrumentals; and detailed images helps show how your surroundings and your choices could effect human development.
When listening to rap music we get to experience the environments that the MC lived through. Most MC’s use music as a way of coping with reality, their violent and hard life. In this way they find a kind of shelter in their songs even though these songs describe their life and how hard it is.
The album was created in less than a year. They gained inspiration from the music of many rock bands, such as Kerry King from Slayer. While listening to the album, the lyrics are mostly about women, drugs, rebelling against parents and partying. The sound of the album from song to song is very different, yet each song has a similar base cord. Each song in the album has a consistent beat while they rap, with small bursts of sound that transitions the lyrics to a faster or slower pace.... ...
Songs are one way of expressing feelings and emotion, many artist do this constantly in their music. To some it is why they make music. There are endless signs and verses that hint at many things such as problems, politics, living in racist era’s also places. I chose to focus on one main rapper and his music only. I chose to examine, review, and study a few of his songs. Kid cudi grew up in cleveland, Ohio. His father passed away when he was a young age which affected the kid ever since. He writes about living his life and having to go through many obstacles
Music is a large consumption of my daily life and the artists I listen to have shaped me in some way. Listening to music is one of my most time
...orgettable. Research shows that “There’s this unifying force that comes from the music and we don’t get that from other things.”(Landau) Bruce Springsteen is a great storyteller and has captured some of the experiences of the American working class. Even when the lyrics are dark or the subject matter is depressing, he manages to provide hope, too. For as long as I can remember, my mother has been playing Springsteen’s music. When I hear a song of his now, it reminds me of driving down the road with the windows down belting out a song with my mom. As Dave Marsh from Creem Magazine prophetically wrote in 1975, “Springsteen’s music is often strange because is has an almost traditional sense of beauty, an inkling of the awe you can feel when, say, first falling in love or finally discovering that the magic in the music is also in you.” (Bruce Springsteen Biography 2)
Lauren Stewart, a reader in psychology at Goldsmiths in London and Dr. Elizabeth Margulis, director of Music Cognition Lab at the University of Arkansas. By using the quotes of these two doctors he is trying to appeal to the ethos. Dr. Lauren Stewart describes the song as an “ earworm” because it is so catchy and gets into your brain. Dr. Elizabeth Margulis explains how the right use of repetition catches the motor circuitry of the brain. She states the song “ pulls you along and makes you feel really happy”.
Most works of art, whether it be a book, a song, or a movie, lead up to an apparent focal point of meaning or truth. Those moments can be categorized in many different ways; action, climax, peak and so on. One piece of work that sticks out to me not only as a catchy song, but also as packed full of meaning is “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster The People. The song discusses touches on depression, violence and supposed negligence, which are all huge problems in our society.
Eminem, as well as many other rappers, frequently incorporate poetry into their music in order to create a unique form of rap. Not only do Eminem and these other rappers aim to entertain their fans, but their unique style of blending rap music and poetry “provides a significant form of education for adolescents, one that extends beyond the classroom and into their peer group circles”(Powell 245). These artists combine these two styles in order to send a positive message to youth experiencing poverty-stricken lifestyle in certain areas in America. The “rap lyrics concentrate primarily on the contemporary African American experience” (Powell 245). In this particular song, Eminem aims to empower and encourage individuals to take a chance on their dreams and essentially “lose themselves” in the moment. The rapper aims to inspire his audience with lines “you only get one shot do not miss your chance to blow. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime yo…” (Eminem 27-28). He motivates his audience to take chances in life because they may never come again. If one does not take a cha...
... powerful way. Music is a social experience. Our brains like the predictably and structure of songs with structured verses and choruses.
Music is one of the most fantastical forms of entertainment. Its history stretches all the way from the primitive polyrhythmic drums in Africa to our modern day pop music we listen to on our phones. It has the ability to amaze us, to capture our attention and leave us in awe. It soothes the hearts of billions, and it is so deeply rooted in my life that it has touched my heart as well. Everyday I walk to the beat of the song stuck in my head and hum along to the melody. For me, to listen to music be lifted into the air by the hands of your imagination and float around for a while. You forget about your worries, your troubles and find peace within the sound. Every chapter in my life is attached with a song. Every time I listen to a certain song, thoughts of my past come flooding back
There aren't many words to describe the emotional reaction I get when I hear certain songs, even those that don't have the "complicatedness" of some of the more skillful artists.
The group of songs that I have chosen represents various genres; some of the notable genres are Blues, Southern Rock, R &B, Hip Hop and other genres. The choice of the discography that I have made conveys the sense of a place. Most of them represent major cities by explaining about the live in those cities and its residents. Songs have profound meanings to many listeners, and convey different meaning to the listeners. It also enlightens people and explains the history of a place or conveys different experiences.
Music, a form of art, made up of unique and special sounds containing elements of pitch and rhythm can powerfully soothe one’s soul. Firstly, there are different types of music, and each has its own features. These sounds and features are what I admire in music because to me it creates a new form of communication to one’s consciousness. It stimulates our mind and gives it a sense of harmony and peace through the hardships that life poses for us. As a kid, I would always listen to music from any genre, deciding which genre would complement me the most as I grew older. In middle school, I remember going on the computer and finding a website/program where I could make my own beats. From that day on, I spent countless of hours each day making sure the tune sounded proper and pleasurable for my ears. At first, it wasn’t good, but eventua...
