Due to the advancement of technology, many people have traded in their responsibilities for machines that complete their chores in a quicker and easier manner. Hand-washing dishes is one of the many household chores that has been replaced by machines. Instead of doing the task themselves many people rely on dishwashers to complete the task for them. Even though this may cut their work time in half, it is always good to have a backup option to fall on when dishwashers break. Hand-washing dishes only takes up 20-30 minutes of your time depending on the extremity. Although the act of hand-washing dishes is disliked by many, it is relatively easy owing to the fact that it can be completed in four easy steps: arranging, filling, washing, and rinsing/drying. Before you start filling the sink with water you want to plug the drain to prevent water from escaping. Next, fill up the sink with hot water from the faucet. You want to allow the water level to be a little less than halfway to avoid overflowing your sink. After that, you are ready to add soap inside the water. Make sure you follow the amount the label says because soap companies have different concentrations and adding too much or too little can affect the way the dishes are cleaned. When you are done putting the soap in the water, stick your hand inside and move it at a steady rate back and forth to create suds. At this time you can now put the dishes in the sink but not all once because it will be too crowded and messy. I took another glass and placed it in the ice bath and set my bowl on the counter. Then I took my last glass and just put it on the counter. Then I took plastic wrap and covered up the jars. After five hours, I took the strings out of their jars and left them for a few hours to completely dry.
Hand washing is very important in order to prevent infection (Leifso, Sheehan, & Knoll, Module 3, 2012). Routine hand washing involves turning on the water, applying soap and then washing for up to 20 seconds (CDC, 2009). All areas should be washed, including the front of the hands, back of the hands, in between fingers, and around the nails (CDC, 2009). After rinsing, paper towels are then used to dry the hands and close the tap (CDC, 2009). Alcohol based hand sanitizers should only be used if it is not possible to get to a sink and if the hands are not visibly dirty (Leifso, Sheehan, & Knoll, Module 3, 2012).

This literature review will analyze and critically explore four studies that have been conducted on hand hygiene compliance rates by Healthcare workers (HCWs). Firstly, it will look at compliance rates for HCWs in the intensive care units (ICU) and then explore the different factors that contribute to low hand hygiene compliance. Hospital Acquired infections (HAI) or Nosocomial Infections appear worldwide, affecting both developed and poor countries. HAIs represent a major source of morbidity and mortality, especially for patients in the ICU (Hugonnet, Perneger, & Pittet, 2002). Hand hygiene can be defined as any method that destroys or removes microorganisms on hands (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2009). According to the World Health Organization (2002), a HAI can be defined as an infection occurring in a patient in a hospital or other health care facility in whom the infection was not present or incubating at the time of admission. The hands of HCWs transmit majority of the endemic infections. As

The main principle of hand hygiene is to prevent the host from infection, by reducing the reservoir of infection (MedicineNet 2018). This is most commonly achieved through the process of hand sanitation using a soap or similar substance. Infection control aims to reduce the risk of transmission of an infectious disease by implementing procedures which aim to prevent or minimise the transmission. (University of Sydney 2017)
Hans Rosling told a heartwarming story of how the washing machine allowed his mother to pursuit education which ultimately, permitted Rosling to become a professor. Likewise, I also believe the washing machine has made the world better for people in poverty especially for women. I, like Rosling, grew up where my grandmother and mom washed clothes by hand. Washing, child care, and house chores were commonly given to women who spent “a large part of their life doing this hard work with so relatively low productivity” (Rosling). The washing machine free up time in the day and allowed these individuals to socialize with friend, rest, or spend their time on other work. Furthermore, the washing machine also allowed women and children who “spent hours
