Hamstring strains are one of the most common injuries which occur in the thigh. There are 3 grades of different strains minor, partial or complete. In his condition Mr Southam has possibly partially strained or torn his hamstring. An athlete progresses at different rates depending on the severity of the injury and the athlete themselves. First making sure he is comfortable to start examining his injury Mr Southam is to be moved away from the field and sat in a suitable area. Ensuring that he does not stretch or move the injured area which could cause more stresses and injury. There are three healing/treatment stages which include PHASE 1 - acute stage (3-4 days), PHASE 2 - sub acute stage (10 days - 2 weeks) and PHASE 3 - final stage which

Al Toon, father of Saints receiver Nick Toon, was forced to leave professional football after sustaining nine concussions in eight years of professional football. Football is one of the most dangerous games. As the years go on, more and more rules are being written to prevent the danger, but danger is the nature of the game. Most of these rules are for the protection of the players, but there are times when injuries can be a good thing. The Philadelphia Eagles were 3-5 to start the year, but Michael Vick was injured and the backup quarterback led the team to be 10-6, win the division, and almost beat the New Orleans Saints in the playoffs. "About 1.7 million Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) every year, about three-quarters of them mild TBIs, or concussions" (Clemmitt). Traumatic Brain Injuries are used as the main form of evidence in Richard Cohen's claim that the end of the NFL is near, and quite frankly, his argument is pretty solid.
Historical trauma is described to be an experience or event that have caused a generation or individual harm.
... This patient, after treatment, had completed ROM and was able to get back to daily activities (Papa 2012). GISTM has been shown to work on all types of injuries, whether the patient had surgery or not. GISTM is becoming a well-known tool in the clinical world and is a reason for faster recovery periods (Black 2010). Works Cited Black D. Kids just want to have fun. In a bygone era, parents wanted kids to play sports for fun and camaraderie. However, a new attitude is developing among coaches and parents, which is mopping-up fun from youth sports. Now it's all about the team and the game. The team must win the game at any cost.
Ben Roethlisberger, commonly known as Big Ben is a quarterback player of Pittsburgh Steelers who suffered a Lisfranc injury in a game. He was carted off because of his serious foot injury that will compromise his mobility and scramble ability.
A 16 year old, female high school soccer player, Lindsey Robinson tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) from a soccer game. Interestingly, she was not the only one in her team who injured her ACL, but also several of her teammates have torn the same ligament as well during the soccer season. Lephart (2002) found that women involved in physical activity are more susceptible to acquire the ACL injuries than men who are involved in the same physical activity (as cited in Ogden, 2002). According to “ACL Injury Prevention” (2004), the numbers on female ACL ruptures have been increased for the past ten year. Over 1.4 million women have been suffered from the ACL rupture which is twice the rate of the previous decade. Therefore, female ACL injuries are now a growing problem in the nation (Anonymous, 2004). Back in 1950s and 1960s, female participation in sports was rare; therefore, the rate of injuries was very low. However, according to “ACL Injuries and Female Athletes” (n.d), as Title IX was implemented in 1972, female participation in numerous sports has dramatically increased. Moreover, the rate of acquiring injuries to the ACL also has dramatically increased (Anonymous, n.d). In terms of comparing the rate of acquiring ACL injuries between two genders, females have higher rate than males do. According to the “Physical Therapy Corner” (2007), “women suffered anterior cruciate ligament injuries more often than men, nearly 4 times as often in basketball, 3 times as often in gymnastics, and nearly 2 and a half times as often in soccer” (Knee Injuries section, para.1). There are various risk factors that contribute to the high rate of acquiring injuries to the ACL for female athletes. External factors such as improper sh...
Sometimes you can’t control your injury and need to get back to your sport as soon as possible. Stop exercising no matter what if you feel pain and see a doctor if the pain continues. Sometimes, it might turn out that you just have to strengthen a certain muscle group. “When you have JUST injured yourself then remember RICE…. It is sometimes extended to PRICER” (Lowry 1). PRICER is an acronym that teaches the steps to recover from an injury that may not be
The number of girls and women participating in all levels of sports has risen greatly in recent years, and the way they play has changed too. Women's sports used to be played by a slow defensive style. Today, the sports are played with speed, precision, and power. With these changes have come increased injuries, and female athletes have higher injury rates than men in many sports. Knee injuries have been rising in female sports. Anterior crutiate ligament (ACL) injuries have become the most common injury in the knee to female athletes. Females are four times more susceptible to injury then men.
These types of injuries could take upwards to eighteen months to return to playing condition, and in this time an athlete will often fall behind in the sport that they love. This often causes the athlete to quit the sport they once loved because they can no longer truly compete amongst their peers. I know that there has to be a way to accelerate this process of recovery and get those athletes back on the field. This is where my passion for orthopaedics
A silent epidemic in America is the all too common childhood exposure to interpersonal traumatic stressors (D’Andrea, Ford, Stolbach, Spinazzola, & van der Kolk, 2012). Approximately 6.6 million children were reported to Child Protective Services (CPS) in 2014 with alleged abuse or neglect (ACF, 2014). Parents are the culprit of eighty percent of all children who endure maltreatment (van der Kolk, 2005). According to Fratto (2016), maltreatment is abuse and/ or neglect by a parent or caregiver. Children who have been exposed to emotional and physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, or witness to war can affect the development of a secure attachment between the child and caregiver (Cook et al., 2005). Evidence shows children
A muscle trauma which, is also known as a muscle strain is an injury which, occurs within the muscle tendon. The pain can be classified into three different sections which are; mild, moderate and severe. The main cause of a muscle strain is when the muscle is overstretched since the muscles have probably been working too hard. If a muscle tear occurs, it can also damage the attaching tendons within the muscles because, the muscle tissues are stretched and then torn (2).
I do not give up. Even though when things are stacked against me, I continue to push towards my goals. I did not give up sports after my first ACL tear, nor did I after the second and I finally gave up organized sports after the third ACL surgeries but I still participate in recreational sports. I don’t think there will ever be a time when I do not participate. This may not be smart but I will not give into fear. I still have not given up when I did not have superior standardized test results! I know that I am more than a test result. I am willing to stick through the program no matter how difficult it becomes.
I started wrestling in the seventh grade, and continued to wrestle in high school. I found wrestling to be a great sport to help me stay in shape, but also make great friends. Many of my friends in high school I made from the wrestling team. Everyone is very supportive of one another, through the many ups and downs wrestling has to offer. There are many injuries that one can suffer from such a rough sport. Many wrestlers end up getting injured during sometime of their wrestling career. My wrestling injury came when I was just a freshman on the wrestling team at Bishop Guertin. It was a time of much pain and recovery that I had to endure in order to make it back out on the wrestling mats. I was afraid and in a lot of pain when I got injured for the first time.
The nerves are raging, mainly in his stomach as the butterflies flutter till no end. "Is everything ok? Will everything go as planned?" He couldn't stop thinking about what might happen. Images were racing wild as he thought about his teammates going to battle without him. He couldn't comprehend why he had to let them handle it on their own. He has played with them since they were in eighth grade, and when they need him the most, all he can do is sit and cheer. He hates this feeling of helplessness, but at the same time he knows he has to do what little he can do, well.
