Hamlet’s quote from his famous soliloquy “To be, or not to be?” (3.1.56) has been included in thousands of even the most unlikely modern media pieces. Sesame Street dedicated an entire segment of the show to the phrase to teach children the letter B (Soliloquy on B). Faber-Castell cleverly broadcasted the quote to sell pencils (Faber-Castell). It has even been used in the beginning of a Beyoncé song (Knowles). Shakespeare’s timeless works are often presumed to be affiliated with high culture, but if Shakespeare supposedly wrote such high-brow literature, then why are the works often quoted in low-brow modern media such as The Simpsons, Star Trek, and every other romance novel? Hamlet covers a plethora of issues that range from shocking incest to normal grief. The issues are universal across cultures, classes, and age groups. Popular culture often utilizes Shakespeare to some degree to tackle these difficult ideals to try to make them more attainable to the modern audience. Some artists try to leech off this relationship to gain some sort of second hand recognition for including a Shakespeare quote, or they try to feed into the idea that Shakespeare is a hopelessly abstract idea that only the most intelligent of minds can partake in. Shakespeare was not meant to live on a pedestal; his works were meant to be reenacted and kept alive. Hamlet teaches and normalizes stigmas that should be discussed with everyone, not just the elite. Books, films, television shows, movies, songs, magazine articles, and advertisements of all genres and kinds have all used Hamlet to reach audience members of all ages. Always in Shakespeare reading we learn many different themes. The play “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare is a classic published in 1603. The story goes through Hamlet’s everyday thoughts of life, love, people and other ideologies. Hamlet story teaches us throughout the story that he hates King Claudius with a ceaseless passion because he poisoned his brother in order to marry the queen and take the crown. Hamlet is the prince and his mother’s marriage to Claudius causes him to have a deep rooted hatred towards women which pushes him to hate sex. Hamlet’s ambiguity is often noted as the reason the play has endured, partly stemming from the three different print versions of the play. Each version loses some important aspect of the play and thus creates a completely new interpretation of certain characters and events. Any version of Hamlet read today is likely a “patchwork quilt” of the three different print additions, tailored together in what is believed the spirit of what Shakespeare intended (Rosenbaum 30). Without the benefit of asking Shakespeare himself, it is difficult to definitively select what he intended. Even though a definitive version of Hamlet has yet to be printed, the patchwork Hamlet has given scholars an uneasy compromise yet provides an encompassing text for the classroom. Since this version contains a cohesive narrative, the ambiguity stems predominately from the characters. Many of the characters, Hamlet in particular, are disjointed in their behaviors and seem like completely different people as the play progresses. The duality of dispositions that many of the actors portray conveys the universal truth that human behavior is not black or white but is instead a mix of different and often conflicting behaviors.

His uncle Claudius was the one who murdered his father and the moment when the ghost of Hamlet’s father appears and asks Hamlet as to when the revenge of his foul and most unnatural murder is to take place. From this point onward Hamlet is under a constant dilemma. He does not find himself ready to take the revenge. If Hamlet had killed Claudius at the first opportunity than the revenge would have been taken but his internal dilemma would have never been solved. This play became very popular and the reason for the popularity was Shakespeare’s use of the character Hamlet and through this character he has tried to exemplify the complex workings of human’s mind. Shakespeare used emotion, reason and attitude of Hamlet to allow the readers to form an opinion or make a judgment about the basic aspects of the life of human beings. William Shakespeare is seen to many as one of the great writers in history. More specifically, the characters in his plays are reviewed and criticized and have been so for nearly four centuries. The character that many have revered Shakespeare for is perhaps the greatest such character ever in literature, Hamlet from Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. The commentary and response to this legend of literature is of wide array and opinion, though most, such as Pennington, believe him to be a truly magnificent character: "Hamlet is perhaps the cleverest hero ever written, the subject of the first European tragedy, a form of genius. A type Shakespeare despaired of writing thereafter, having perceived that the heroes of tragedies must be sublime idiots" (185). However, despite his clear gifts and aura, Hamlet was a doomed character from the beginning: Hamlet is dominated by an emotion that is inexpressible. It is thus a feeling he cannot understand, he cannot objectify it, and it therefore remains open to poison life and to obstruct action" (Eliot 25). Thus, Hamlet, while possessing the traits of no other men of his time, a true Renaissance man, was doomed from the beginning of the play partly by forces he could not control, and also partly by his own character. It leads to a slow but definite ending to one of literature's great characters, one that he could not control. In the end, Hamlet was out of place in his environment, he was simply not meant to be.

Many have wondered why Hamlet, a work from around 400 years ago is relevant in modern society. One would think a piece of work written at the time based on a true story would eventually die out as it became irrelevant. That isn't the case of Hamlet and other works by Shakespeare simply because of how Shakespeare is able to wonderfully address the human condition and the fact that the human condition simply does not change within 400 years. As said by Craven a professor at UTSA, “Humans still experience love, loss, betrayal, war, humor and tragedy, which gives Shakespeare a foothold in modern times,”Due to this, Hamlet is still relevant today because its major themes such as love, betrayal, and tragedy are major forces that we as a species still have to deal with. These themes heavily resonates with us and can be seen in popular contemporary works that exist today such as Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games and the Twilight Series which shows us how Hamlet is relevant today because of its portrayal of human traits.

Through the elements of technique portrayed in this essay, it is clear to see that Shakespeare is able to influence the reader through soliloquies, imagery, and dual understanding. This overall influence being both the communication of a deeper meaning, and a more complex understanding of the events and statements within Hamlet.
