Symbolism in Hamlet takes the reader on a figurative journey through William Shakespeare 's great tragedy. The purpose of using symbols in literature is to illustrate the unseen conflict with tangible objects. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines symbolism as "the art or practice of using symbols especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visible or sensuous representations." "Symbolism." (Merriam-Webster.com. Merriam-Webster, n.d. Web. 9 May 2016.) The three main symbols that Shakespeare included in Hamlet are the crown, the skull, and the chalice. The crown represents power which is used to fuel the jealously, anger, and hatred of the characters. The skull represents death, …show more content…
The symbol at work here is poison because although Polonius 's advice is good in itself, he gives his children a hypocrite of a father. He tells Laertes several words of advice, one of them telling Laertes to be true to himself and to others. "This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man." (1.3.17) Polonius 's lying actions that he performs later in the play add to the poisoning of Laertes ' mind because if he cannot trust his own father, who can he trust? Polonius then proceeds to tell Ophelia to cut off her relationship with Prince Hamlet. This contributes to the heartbreak that both Ophelia and Hamlet feel, but ultimately leads to the death of Ophelia due to the poison that drove her to insanity.
Toward the end of Act I, power, death, and poison serve as the incentives that command the rest of the play. Hamlet meets his dead father 's ghost who reveals to him that King Claudius poisoned Old Hamlet. Then Prince Hamlet is instructed to seek revenge on Claudius but not his mother, Gertrude. Here it is seen that power was the driving force that led Claudius to kill his brother, poison aided in his death, but his death is what gives Hamlet power over

Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, attempts to mask specific emotions throughout the play. After the initial betrayal by his mother, Hamlet discovers that Claudius has also betrayed him when he learns that it was Claudius who murdered his father. This revelation, as told to Hamlet by the ghost of King Hamlet, shocks and enrages him. The ghost sets Hamlet out on a quest to revenge his father’s “foul and most unnatural murder” (I.v.31). Hamlet agrees to carry out the ghost’s wishes, also agreeing to spare his mother from harm. From that point forward in the play, Hamlet feigns being mad in order to set up his revenge against Claudius, and decides to carry out numerous tests to make sure it was indeed Claudius who killed his own brother in order to be

A majority of people will say that in the play “Hamlet”, by William Shakespeare, the main theme is revenge. A majority of people will say this until they have read Hamlet’s soliloquy/speech in Act four Scene four. When readers are finished reading through the speech, they realize that the real theme of the play was about how Hamlet was going to get over his inner struggle to take action about his father’s death. The Elizabethan audience really enjoyed more realistic plays as to ones that could never happen. They could have understood Hamlet’s inner struggle

William Shakespeare's “Hamlet” is one of the most tragic plays ever written. It is about a young prince trying to keep his word to his dead father by avenging his death. Hamlet procrastinates when avenging his father’s death, which is his tragic flaw. Hamlet appears to be a coward as well as depressed. He finds himself questioning his own ambitious motives such as revenge and hatred toward his murderous uncle. Hamlet tells Horatio, his friend that he is going to fake madness as he loses his determination. It is Hamlet’s hubris that makes me begin to believe he is mad. Hamlet does at one point have doubt concerning the honesty of the ghost. His various reasons for delay in seeking revenge is that he wants to make sure his uncle Claudius is one hundred percent guilty and at the same time does not want to hurt his mother. He has too much Oedipus complex, love for his mother.
In the beginning of the play, Hamlet has returned from Wittenberg to honor the death of his father, King Hamlet, and the ghost of his dead father suddenly confronts him. The ghost of King Hamlet has returned to inform his son about the murder that his brother has committed. While King Hamlet was asleep, his brother, Claudius, placed poison in his ear and left him suffering to die. The ghost of King Hamlet sets the main conflict of the play into motion and puts the idea of revenge into Hamlet’s mind. He says to Hamlet:
William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is filled with many schemes and situations that are a challenge to interpret. The play centers around Hamlet, whose uncle murdered his father and married his mother. Certainly no one could blame Hamlet for appearing a little bit crazy after having to deal with that type of trauma. There are several times during Hamlet when Prince Hamlet appears to be crazy. What makes assessing the prince’s mental state more challenging is the fact that Prince Hamlet sets up a play within the play to expose his uncle for killing his father. Hundreds of years after Shakespeare first wrote Hamlet in 1603, scholars still disagree over whether Prince Hamlet is actually
To understand a play, you must first understand the fundamentals for the play: protagonist, antagonist, exposition, rising action, crisis, climax and resolution. I will examine Hamlet by William Shakespeare. This is a great example for the purpose of this paper it provides a clear and great examples.
Old Hamlet is killed by his brother Claudius. Only two months after her husband’s death a vulnerable Gertrude marries her husband’s brother Claudius. Gertrude’s weakness opens the door for Claudius to take the throne as the king of Denmark. Hamlet is outraged by this, he loses respect for his mother as he feels that she has rejected him and has taken no time to mourn her own husband’s death. One night old Hamlets ghost appears to prince Hamlet and tells him how he was poisoned by his own brother. Up until this point the kingdom of Denmark believed that old Hamlet had died of natural causes. As it was custom, prince Hamlet sought to avenge his father’s death. This leads Hamlet, the main character into a state of internal conflict as he agonises over what action and when to take it as to avenge his father’s death. Shakespeare’s play presents the reader with various forms of conflict which plague his characters. He explores these conflicts through the use of soliloquies, recurring motifs, structure and mirror plotting.
In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, the protagonist exhibits a puzzling, duplicitous nature. Hamlet contradicts himself throughout the play. He endorses both the virtues of acting a role and that of being true to one's self. He further supports both of these conflicting endorsements with his actions. This ambiguity is demonstrated by his alleged madness, for he does behave madly, only to become perfectly calm and rational an instant later. These inconsistencies are related with the internal dilemmas he faces. He struggles with the issue of revenging his father's death, vowing to kill Claudius and then backing out, several times. Upon this point Hamlet stammers through the play. The reason for this teetering is directly related to his inability to form a solid opinion about role playing. This difficulty is not present, however, at the start of the play.
In Act I scene V, Hamlet is told by his father’s ghost to “revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.” The ghost then goes on to tell Hamlet that as he was “sleeping in my orchard, A serpent stung me” and that “The serpent that did sting thy father’s life Now wears his crown.” Hamlet is told by the ghost to seek revenge, telling him that Claudius has corrupted Denmark and corrupted Gertrude, having seduced her in the foul lust of their incestuous marriage. The ghost urges Hamlet not to act against his mother in any way, telling him to “Leave her to heaven, And to those thorns that in her bosom lodge, To prick and sting her.”
