Hamlet A Hero Analysis

The story of Hamlet is a very interesting one that involves power hungry, mischievous, corrupt, and prideful individuals that eventually led one another to each other’s death. With a situation like this, it is hard to determine a hero because when you think of the word hero, you think of someone that is brave and have noble qualities. Regardless of the horrible qualities each person possessed and the definition of what a hero is when you take a step back and really think about it, out of everyone, Hamlet was the one that fits that description. His actions throughout the story came from people doing him wrong and insulting his intelligence, so he had to retaliate like any normal person would. Therefore, in this story, although not everything …show more content…

But, in Hamlet’s defense, he did say to Horatio and Marcellus, “...As I perchance hereafter shall meet / To put an antic disposition on” (1.5.191-192), meaning he was going to play crazy until he could seek out his revenge. Hamlet postponing and actually coming up with excuses as to why he could not seek his revenge right then and there because of a ghost makes me question what kind of mental state Hamlet was in. Now, in a situation where you know your uncle killed your father, and your mother is married to your uncle, would you be able to keep your sanity? He went through grief, depression, and lastly anger which eventually led to his own death. You can pick his mind with this soliloquy from the text, “Or that the Everlasting had not fixed / His canon 'gainst self-slaughter” (1.2.131-132), which talks about how Hamlet wanted to commit suicide and he wished it was not illegal. When looking at the things Hamlet did in my eyes, I think he handled everything fairly well considering everything he was up against. He played their game and unfortunately in the end, he also died. I feel like no matter what he did in his situation, he was not going to win. People had it out for him when he was just being a human with normal feelings about the things that he did not like. He literally had no one by his side but Horatio, and that alone can make any …show more content…

That is why I also say inaction led him to his downfall. He constantly hesitated to kill Claudius because of what the ghost told him. In the text he said, “Haste me to know't, that I, with wings as swift / As meditation or the thoughts of love, may sweep to my revenge" (1.5.29-30). Here he says he will go and kill the person who killed his father quick, but Hamlet does not kill Claudius until act 5, after he finds out that he killed his mother. If he would have killed Claudius as soon as he found out that information, I believe Hamlet’s fate would have been different because the root of his anger was mainly Claudius. He wanted to kill Hamlet every chance he got but Hamlet did not kill Claudius even though he had a lot of opportunities to do so. This goes to show that deep down Hamlet was not a bad guy at all which shows the heroic side to him. And you notice at the end how he is the only one that got a royal burial? The people loved and respected Hamlet and did not see the “crazy” side to him. He definitely is the one that had a good heart in this messed up situation, but his second guessing and pride indicates that he was in a constant battle within’ himself and it led to his
