On the twenty-first of August, our Wearable History class took a trip to downtown Bowling Green, to visit Mosaic Confinement Studio. The studio had an old-fashioned vibe, and was like a vintage-garment haven. There, we were asked to choose a piece that we thought was vintage, identify the time period it actually came from, and also take some additional notes on the style and the garment’s details. After searching through multiple racks, the first piece I found was a lace blazer. It turned out to only be vintage-inspired, so I went searching again. I came across a few other pieces, but nothing was really jumping out at me. Eventually, I came across a lavender dress that immediately made me think of Julia Roberts in “Mystic Pizza”, and I knew I found my garment.
For starters the title, “Barbie Doll” holds a meaning. It symbolizes the ideal figure of a female body. Society creates this ideal that is embed into every century. It is never ending. It is intended that she must have the twig like arms and legs, the minuscule waist and nose,
From the conventional Victorian dresses of the 1800’s to the rock-and-roll tee shirts of the 1980’s, American culture has experienced incredibly diverse trends in clothing. This ever changing timeline of fashion provokes the question: what is the cause of such differing styles? By considering the state of society throughout the eras, it can be seen that clothing directly correlates with the current way of life. Specifically, American women’s fashion of the 1920’s and 1930’s proves to not simply be a meaningless trend – rather an accurate reflection of the specific era.
Unblemished skin, windows of the soul with double eyelids, shaped eyebrows, chiseled nose, full red lips, burnished white teeth, jam-packed busts, and curves that spoke of perfect triad numbers all clothed with head turner costumes– words that illustrate the undeniably and undisputedly most successful and most famous doll of all time, Barbie. She is an: “[…] anatomically improbable molded plastic statuette [that] has become an icon [in fashion and has become a representation of every girl’s dream].” (qtd. in Ament 1) She was invented by Ruth Handler who was the co-founder of Mattel Fashion. The name, Barbie, was in honor of Ruth’s daughter, Barbara. “Ruth was inspired to create a three-dimensional toy based on adult paper dolls that have changeable clothes. She suggested it to her husband, Elliot, [who was also the] co-founder of Mattel Fashion.” (qtd. in Moss) Elliot and Ruth made everything just to make Barbie popular and accessible to every girl. And as they say, the rest is history.
Some of these dresses are not appropriate for children. On an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras one mother had her daughter dress up like the prostitute from Pretty Women. Some of these dresses have cuts in the sides or in the back that reveal a lot of skin for children under the age of 15. Is this teaching our children it’s okay to dress up like a prosti...
The Barbie is a plastic, man-made female toy, which has perfect facial symmetry, unnatural body dimensions, and perfectly unblemished white skin. In Chris Semansky’s Overview of “Barbie Doll,” he explains that the Barbie “is invented to show women have been socialized into thinking of their bodies and behavior in relation to a male-controlled idea” (Semansky). The title directly alludes to the Barbie toy, which represents a design of a man-made construction of the female image that shows an unnatural human form that could only exist inside the imagination of men. Throughout both “Barbie Doll” and “The Birthmark” you will find the female protagonists seeking an ultimately perfect form, free of the characteristics that those around them see as unworthy. It is as if they are chasing the blueprint of perfection that is present in the Barbie. The original Barbie came with three outfits a bathing suit, a tennis outfit, and a wedding dress (Semansky). Her outfits clearly symbolize restrictions forced on female privilege, identity, and autonomy, where “she embodies the ideals and values of her middle-class American community” who expect her to “spend her days at the country club and her afternoons cooking dinner for her husband” (Semansky). This is directly similar to the “outfits” those around the women in “Barbie Doll” where the girlchild is born
Nora is the doll in the hands of Torvald. “A doll with a human figure is normally found in the hands of children, who makes the doll act according to their wish” (Ganesan and Kumaran). Torvald pets, dresses and provides Nora with money. Nora is not allowed to be herself because Torvald has full control over every aspect of her life. She plays the role of a doll to please her husband and to have a happy marriage. Nora has no identity since she has been playing a role all her life.
As I have already mentioned, she tended to fixate on the same color scheme. Also, Red Star incorporated feathers, tassels, or fringes into each and every dress. The use of these materials, especially the feathers, could have been influenced from her time spend on the Crow reservation. I enjoyed these additions to the dresses because it provided them with texture and allowed for movement. A few of Red Star’s dress designs were a bit complex. One of them was red, black, and white, included three different patterns, and incorporated fringes. Another dress that stood out to me was red blue and white. The red and white sections on the back had a feathery texture. The top of this dress was silky blue and included bells. The entire front was covered in fringes and was significantly shorter than the back of the dress. There is a strong cultural aspect in the dresses designed by Red Star, which was influenced by her own cultural experiences and traditions. Red Star has a special talent, which gives her the ability to make all of these different textures and patterns collaborate with each
Savannah had begged for months for it, and Debra was pleased. She herself loved the uniqueness of the doll, always one to expose her daughter to new ideas both unique and educational. Kaya is considered the first American Girl doll, a proper nod to the fact that Native Americans were here long before Europeans made their contact. In researching the doll, Debra found that Kaya has a face-mold that differs from the other American Girl dolls, due to a taboo with in her nation, the Nimíipuu, that has to do with showing their teeth. In their culture, it conveys aggression, and is frowned upon. Satisfied with the message the doll’s story conveyed, she purchased Kaya as a Christmas gift for
There are many things that as a child aren 't considered sexy but past a certain point those same actions suddenly of a totally different meaning. For instance, crawling on your hands and knees; as a baby is seen as a mode of transportation but as an adult can have a very contrasting implication. The clothes the woman is wearing are very classic baby clothing but on her, they seem to enhance her curves and figure causing confusion for the viewer’s emotions. All this combined with the fact that she is playing with toys makes the viewer simultaneously feels guilty and sleazy for being attracted to
... blanket or a stuffed toy to keep the baby comfortable if she is over six months old.
This outfit is exactly what we don’t want to get my mom, I have to think outside the box and give this the proper Myles twist.
Princess Charlotte has only been seen once in a dress since birth and royal watchers might need to wait quite a while to see this happen again. In a very shocking admission, the well-known go-to children's wear designer, Rachel Riley, is dishing that the Duchess of Cambridge might not be putting dresses on her daughter for a long time. According to People Magazine on Tuesday, it might be around the first birthday of the child before another gown will be worn.
Babies were normally wrapped in swaddling clothes, they believed that wrapping babies would protect them from falls and help straighten legs and spine. It was also convenient for people to carry the babies around relatively more safely and if needed they were sometime hung up or a peg.
