Hairspray is a musical romantic comedy film from 2007 based on the 2002 broadway musical which has the same name . This is a British american verture produced by Zadan/Meron Productions . The film developed in 2004 . It didn’t get its first drafted screenplay until 2005 and was directed by Shankman . Marc Shaiman was the composer and Scott Wittman was the lyricist , they even wrote four new songs just for the film . Hairspray first premiered on July 13 , 2007 at the Mann Village Theatre and was released a week later on July 20 , 2007 to the united states . This musical broke the record for biggest sales of opening weekend for a musical based on a movie . Hairspray is based on a heavy set white teenager during the time of segregation . One day on the show one of the dancers take a leave of absence , and auditions are held , so Tracey excitedly went to auditions . Velma immediately turned her down due to her size and for supporting integration . Tracey was given detention for skipping class to go to auditions . In detention Tracey met some of the kids from The Corny Collins “Negro Day” as they were practicing their dances during detention . Tracey became friends the the kids from “Negro Day” and became very close with Seaweed the star dancer from “Negro Day” . Velma soon after cancels “Negro Day” all together , so they decided to march for integration . Tracey snuck out of her house to join the protest . During the march when they reached the police blocking the road , Tracy hit the police officer on the back of the head with a poster to get his attention , rumors flaired all over the news saying Tracy hit him with with a crowbar . Tracey was hiding at her friend Penny’s house , when Penny’s mom finds Tracey she goes to tell the police and Seaweed comes and sneaks Tracy and Penny out of the house
