Hair in the 1980's
During the 1980's there was a wide range of popular hairstyles. Such as the side pony tail, the jersey bangs and how could we forget the mullet. In the 80's it was all about big hair and what was then and now. The 70's was the hippie era where everyone was calm and cool and your hair resemble your aura. The 80's wanted it bigger and more edgy where a lot of feathering and jagged hairstyles came in. A popular way to create this big hairstyles was but layering the entire head and setting in in rollers to create curl and volume then topping it off with some more than necessary back combing/teasing. A lot of women took to the oh so popular perming as an everyday hairstyle. In an article I read it states that," The much higher the hair at the back of the head was, the more confident and stylish the women became."

when it came to hair. A big goal of how the hair looked was to make it unique and different, something that the other women were sure to go and copy. One of the big hairstyles was done by cutting all of the hair short and then leaving a small patch at the nape of the neck know as the "tail." Many wen would die their short hair a different color than their "tail" for an added effect. (StylishEve.com) During the 80's women's hair tended to be over processed with an excessive amount of damage. A lot of these hairstyles were made to resemble those of the Pop artists at the time. With big hair comes a lot of hairspray, which was a huge part of everyday styling. Hairspray was used to keep the hair at desired volume and to keep the frizz, frizzy. Not everything goes away. One of the most popular hairstyles was the waved and asymmetrical hairstyle which we now know as the bob and or shag haircuts. This hairstyle is edgy and all around a "bad girl" style. One of the most popular ways to wear the asymmetrical haircut was by cutting a traditional Bob and leaving one side of the hair significantly longer than the other giving it more of a dramatic effect. This was very popular to the young girls of the 80's. Another popular way of styling was by crimping the hair with the styling tool called " crimper." Many women used the crimper to add the waved hair effect. Leaving it smooth and waved or sometimes leaving it crazy frizzy and tasting it to large amounts while leaving the bang whispy and largely rolled. This was a crowd favorite. This was also popular to do before slicking the hair into a tight side ponytail leaving the hair against the head pasted and smooth and the hair at the other end of the ponytail teased and curly/wavy. No one could pull this style off without the popular Aquanet hairspray of course. (liketotally80s.com) We can't forget the men's hairstyles of the 80's which consisted of the business man hair, the rat tail, and my favorite the mullet. Nowadays the mullet is a big no-no, but back in the 80's it was all the rage! Men and women alike had this hairstyle but it was more common for men. This hairstyle is achieved by cutting the top, front and sides of the hair in a traditional men's form haircut sometimes leaving the sides a little shorter. Then the back is left longer and layered occasionally. Also known as the awesome " business in the front, party in the back." Another all the rage hairstyle for men was the flat top. Also known as more of a military style haircut. With this hairstyle men could leave their hair at any desired length on top use a lot of gel and hairspray to make it stand straight up and styled. This hair-style was very popular in the African American community and often consisted of a rat tail at the nape of the neck. One of the common hairstyles was the Jheri Curl this hair-style was a wet looking, curled/waved, glossy look. One of the more common hairstyles we see today is the spiked up hairstyles which we see as normal.
In the 80's both men and women had spiked hair. During this era it was more seen as the punk look and on the edge. More popular with men and young boys than with women who preferred to keep their hair at a slightly longer length. One of the popular spiked up hairstyles was the Mohawk. Which consisted of the sides from the temples all the way back to the nape of the hair to be shaved till there was little to no hair, leaving the top all the way to the nape longer. In order to style a Mohawk you would blow dry the hair straight up using large amounts of gel and hairspray to keep it sticking straight up all day long. Once again this was a more common hairstyle to see on men. Sometimes to add a bit more edge the hair left down the center would be colored. Sometimes just coloring the tips would make it slightly more edgy. In this era it was also popular for those who had curly hair to wear it in the all natural style known as the Afro.
(stylisheve.com) Some of the popular Styling tools of the 80's included the well known straighter, perm rods, crimpers, big rollers, blow dryers and of course the curling iron. No hairstyle is complete without some product! Some of the products used in the 80's are still popu-lar today; Such as, hairspray, gel, curl creams, frizz tamers, and hair puddings. If we take a step back and look at the common hairstyles of today we see a lot of what was popular from the 80's, the 90's even dating back to the 70's. Showing us that styles aren't really truly forgotten but later brought back with a twist and added to the timeless trends.
On August 3, 1979, a female was assaulted and raped in her apartment. Victor Burnette, 19 years old, was brought in as a suspect and the female said that he was the perpetrator. Burnette was convicted based on pubic hairs found at the scene. He spent seven years in prison and was released on parole in ’87. Two decades later, Burnette asked to have his case reworked using DNA analysis and was found to be not guilty. The serologist who worked his case was Mary Jane Burton. By the time Burnette cleared his name, at least five other people had been exonerated from their convictions due to Burton’s evidence. (“Victor”) Hair analysis has been a part of forensic science since the beginning. However, some have begun to question the reliability of

Everyone faces varying degrees of peer pressure at least once in their lifetime, but what matters is how one reacts. In Bad Haircut—a collection of short stories—the author, Tom Perrotta, examines the effect of peer pressure on the main character, Buddy, in a comical yet informative light. Buddy faces peer pressure consistently and ends up associating with the wrong people, due to a lack of backbone. Yet Buddy is different and a better person than those who he associates with because he is compassionate and able to recognize that he is a follower; therein lies the irony that only the reader sees Buddy’s merit while the other characters only see the results of his friends’ poor judgment.
In 1750, the coiffure, which was used frequently among the rich of Europe, was finally catching on in the Americas. A coiffure was a French style that you have probably seen, it is huge hair styles that are made primarily out of horse hair and take hours to complete. The hair got big and wild and out of control. In some cases they even put cardboard cut outs of animals or trees in the sea of wire curls. Toward the end of the big hair the styles came close to the head and spread out.

" This brings us to ‘Good Hair’, a 2009 documentary by Chris Rock that examines what the ongoing pursuit of ‘good’ hair says about African-American cultural identity and the hair-care industry. It investigated and revealed why black people across the ages have subjected themselves to sometimes dangerous, often painful practices in the pursuit of beautiful hair. It also looks into the dangers of many common hair-straightening treatments and reveals the alarmingly high cost of having ‘good’ hair. The social and psychological aspect of hair was delved in by the authors of Hair Story (2010), Tharps and Byrd note, since the beginning of African civilizations "hairstyles have been used to indicate a person's marital status, age, religion, ethnic identity, wealth, and rank within the community..... ...

With rioting and terrorism taking place around the world, more aggressive and rebellious styles were being created. The punk look came with this; singers like Johnny Rotton and bands like The Ramones and the Sex Pistols were a few to lead a new generation of teens. There was also the introduction of glam-rock in which musicians mixed glamour with rock. Davis Bowie was the most successful. Fans copied his "rooster" hair cut. He made the androgynous look popular.
not explain the advancement into a new era. Rooks provided insignificant details about Walker, without stating the connection to the subject, it often appeared as if she had abandoned the topic altogether.
Hair is an important part of our body. It can be found anywhere and can be a useful evidence in forensic science. It consists of three layers, namely cuticle, cortex and medulla. Cuticle- is a covering that consists of hard scales made of keratin, which is a protein approaching tip ends of the hair. There are three types of cuticle: coronal, imbricated and spinous types. Cortex consists of stretched out beam shaped cells, buried with pigment granules for hair to cede with color and is the main body of the hair shaft. It may also contain pigment granula, ovoid bodies and cortical fusi (Wright, 2008). Furthermore, medulla can be categorized into continuous, fragmental, absent and interrupted types. If medulla
Thus, a mullet is no longer a haircut, but a species based on how society classifies them. For example, when someone walks down a street a points to the haircut, they don’t say “look at the person with the mullet”, its typically the haircut labels the person.Their stereotype developed mostly from the mid 70’s from the “butt-rock” era. Typical bands to represent a mullet are: Winger, Scorpions, Dio, Ted Nugent, The Marshall Tucker Band, Metallica (1990-present), Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Journey, Krokus, Accept, W.A.S.P., Van Halen, Sammy Hagar, Slash's Snakepit. Most of these cases are spouse abusers and drug addicts.
In colonial times, the hair style that was put to shame was bald. People did not want to become bald. The people who were already bald felt embarrassed. Wigs were the solution to this predicament. Being bald was like wearing a dunce cap on you head all the time. If you wanted to be respected and treated as such, you could not be bald. Although male pattern baldness is natural, disease had a role into the wig fib as well. Syphilis also caused the need for wigs. Back then, STDs were very common among men and women. Syphilis caused baldness. To cover up the fact that one was bald, a wig would be needed. Personal hygiene was another reason for wigs. Personal hygiene was not a normal thing for people back then. They rarely, if ever, showered. This caused lice to infect their natural growing hair. The lice would begin to eat away at their hair and scalp. Wigs were needed once more to, again, hide baldness. These reasons lead to a jump start in the world of wig making.
Imagine having the flexibility of wearing your hair loose and flowing. . .maybe pulled back in a simple rubber band, or allowing your long locks to swing expressively in front of your face. It's a natural feeling and style, that epitomizes your love for individualism, they are your Dreadlocks. The art of dreadlocks can be traced back to the Ancient Caribbean islands such as Jamaica where they were fine tuned to perfection by Rastafarians. Here at Syracuse University, students give a new meaning to what it is like to be a part of the dreadlock society without having to be a Rastafarian, a black radicalist, or politically correct. In fact, being able to be different and sculpt the hair away from the average trends on campus creates this off beat group--The Dreadlocks Society.
