I am very competitive with my peers when it comes to academics, so I always want to come in 1st place. It was during my first semester of Pre-AP Chemistry, and the test he gave was very difficult. My teacher already warned us to study very hard because the test is nowhere near easy. I studied the review very carefully, for I wanted to make an A on his test. I was very nervous after I took the test because I didn’t even finish before my time was up, so I already knew that I would fail the test. The scores came in, and I earned a 56 out of 100. Whether they are positive or negative, our habits are an integral part of our lives. Because of this, when Professor James VanderMey addressed the 33rd annual Honors Convocation at Mid Michigan Community College, he decided to speak on the topic of habit. In his speech, entitled “Remarks on Habit,” VanderMey (argues against Sartre’s point of view by) discusses the advantages of having good habits, especially the habits represented by the Diploma Qualification Profile, a series of proficiencies that students learn as they are educated at Mid Michigan Community College. First, he shows that good habits lead to creative problem solving. Then, he argues that our habits make us who we are. Finally, he shows how good habits may grow and multiply. Habits, especially DQP habits, are positive and useful, because they allow one to think creatively, become a better person, and find innovative ways of doing.

In the article, “the power of habit” by Charles Duhigg, it states how Angie Bachmann became addicted to gambling and how it was entirely her fault because she kept accepting the offers from casinos and many other reasons. The Achievement Habit is a book all about taking control of your life. Bernard Roth is the author and he does a brilliant job of pointing out everyday issues about society. He points out in chapter two that Reasons Are Bullshit . Everyone uses reasons for things that we can control but we only use them when the things are not top priority. If everything we did has top priority then we would get it done and not need an excuse or reason for it. A habit of mind is a way of thinking that one acquires over time. It is a type of thought that involves thinking beyond what society considers right or wrong, but acknowledging through complex thought, what is morally right. It is not easily achieved and is somewhat like a muscle, in that you have to build it up over time through intellectual work and hardship. Not everyone can achieve a strong habit of mind, in fact most don’t. The habit is a way of thinking that allows one to communicate with knowledge when the answer is not initially apparent. In order to think in this complex manner a person has to be well educated in all subjects of intelligence. Having a good education goes hand in hand with having good habits of mind, because in order to have positive functioning habits, a person has to be well rounded enough to considered every possible solution to the problems or questions posed. Being able to use a habit of mind also requires a type of thinking where others nor any outside force constrains any ideas or solutions . This by definition is a habit of mind.

Stephen R. Covey first wrote the self-help book entitled, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, this book has since opened the eyes and hearts to millions of people throughout the world. After discovering the success that so many individuals encountered and still encountering, Dr. Covey decided to write the sequel entitled, The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness. This habit is explained as, “Finding your voice, your calling, your soul’s code and inspire others to do the same.” What does that mean exactly and how would one implement that particular habit into the business world? Being proactive is the first step in the seven habit journey. I thought I was proactive because I always had to plan everything in my life. Family vacations, work schedules, continuing education all were events that I was proud to say I planned right down to the last detail. Reading the Covey material I realized that being proactive went much deeper than just planning life events. Being proactive involves choosing my attitude, focusing on my circle of influence and not my circle of concern, and turning setbacks into triumphs. Stephen Covey 's habit #3 from, "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" has ended up being one of the hardest for me to adopt. Being able to say no sounds easy in theory but adopting that to my life has been very difficult. This habit is about empowerment of priorities, balancing your time effectively and labeling tasks based on urgency. I have never struggled with organization or keeping things on my calendar but what I have struggled with is the guilt that comes with letting others down. The craving experiments are what will help you figure out what you are trying to fix with your bad behavior. Are you trying to fix boredom, need for companionship, hunger, stress, anger, fear etc One experiment may not be enough to pinpoint the exact craving but you can start with what you know. If you know that your habit is pushed by boredom for instance, pick a new habit to do in place of your bad one. After fifteen minutes of doing this new activity, note down how you feel. Do you still feel like doing that bad habit?
