In a perfect world, each person would be fit and beach body ready all the time, but sadly in the United States that is not the case. The government and other organizations have stressed the importance of being healthy and the serious dangers that come with being overweight, yet the obesity rate continues to climb. The price of junk food and electronic devices, such as cell phones, is steadily declining while the price of healthy food and fitness machines are constantly on the rise. Getting a gym membership can lead to an increase in an individual’s social activity. Gym memberships give people an advanced opportunity to meet new people. A gym membership allows individuals to interact with people who share common interest. They both would like to improve their health. Joining a gym allows those individuals to interact with others who share the same interest, share workout tips or even personal tips, and offer motivation to those around them. It also helps in building strong relationships and trust by being around those people and feeling comfortable enough to work out in front of them. Those who work out with other members in a gym feel the desire to perform the best they can and to prove they are not the weakest link. A corporate gym membership is when employers can provide their staff with access to gyms for little to no cost. Scott Beagrie writes that, “Employee Benefits/Alexander Forbes Benefits Research found that 27% of employers offer it on a voluntary basis” (Beagrie 1). He also states that employees are not the only ones who benefit. He found that, “Employers also benefit from promoting staff fitness and wellbeing, which is known to increase engagement and motivation” (Beagrie 1). A variety of programs are offered by employers, from having a membership to the latest and greatest gym or just having access to a small onsite gym that offers a few exercise machines within the office such as an elliptical and treadmill or treadmill workstation. When it comes to choice of where to workout it is a complete personal preference. Some people do not like the thought of people staring at them or watching them workout because they are not at the place they wish to be at yet. This is only one other thing that sets people in this discourse community apart from themselves. In some instances, this can become a disadvantage for the person pushing towards a specific goal. Our table is dismissed. I head back to gym with a full stomach, something that shouldn’t happen. Third block is the lunch block and the eighth grade special block. This shouldn’t happen and as principle the first change that would be in immediate effect would amend the schedule to be specials during first, second, and fourth block. The gym is a place where a typical American college student goes to work out their bodies. Based on the fact that I personally could be considered a gym rat, a stereotypical name for someone who spends a lot of time in the work out area. This is partially by choice being on the swim team requires the strength training equipment that is available to our disposal in the gym. While I have been to the gym many times I haven’t really taken the time to take in the other people around me. Within this ethnographic exercise I will explore the college gym norms within Roger Williams University.
Entertainment has been an established part of the American culture almost since its founding. The types of entertainment that most Americans enjoy in today's world are going to the movies, going out to eat, and exercising. Different forms of exercise vary from running and playing sports to weight lifting. Those who enjoy weight lifting can choose to do so in the privacy of their home, in a community center like the YMCA, or in a health club. At a health club one can expect to find a wide variety of people; however, some of these people add to the downside of working out at a local health club because they can be annoying and obnoxious. Three types of these annoying, obnoxious people found at the weight room of a local health club are the show-off, the know-it-all, and the wanderer; these types can be identified by their physical appearance, their social behavior, and their attitude.
Routine physical activity may be difficult for those with low income to achieve. Firstly, people who have low income generally must work longer and laborious hours than people in the high and middle income rankings in order to have enough money to get by. Low-class Americans simply do not have the time or energy to exercise their bodies. Also, an individual’s economic status can be the cause for several obstacles of achieving physical fitness. For instance, the lack of transportation to and from the gym could be a major problem, as well as being able to pay gym membership fees or gym equipment. It is further explained, “A lack of good transportation choices is the most important single issue that limits routine activities such as walking, biking, and transit use by low income people.” (Squibb 2) Poor economy is only one of the ways low-income individuals are limited to physical fitness.
In the American Culture we have adapted many ways of the Greek and Roman Empires. Our society has the laid back lifestyle of the Greeks and the physical fitness of the Romans. Statistics show 45 percent of Americans set a goal every year to achieve weight loss/fitness. Of that 45 percent, and just under half of Americans still maintain their New Year’s Resolution (Hub Pages). The question is why is weight-loss so important in America? There are many answers and factors that play into figuring out the equation. One factor is the increase of obesity in our country year in and year out. Other key factors is the impact of media on our culture to look slim and be sexy, and even children’s toy figures have become more masculine and unrealistic. Although our society is becoming more accepting that not everyone can be a Barbie and Ken or resemble characters from our favorite action figures, the combination of these major factors help answer the equation to why weight loss has become so prevalent in our society today.

The saddest part about this statistic is that obesity is, in most cases, brought on by the individual. With fast food being a cheap and convenient way to feed the family, obesity has constantly been on the rise since the industry’s proliferation. The gym where I train and workout, the Dubuque Martial Arts Group, is a place where I know who I am. It is a place I can go to escape my problems for a while and release some stress. It's not the actual physical building, but rather the events that have occurred there over the years. It's where I have formed some of my closest friendships.
