Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" In "The Necklace," Mathilde dreams of nothing more than a rich and first-class lifestyle. For one night of her life, she gets to experience everything she has longed for. From going to an elegant ball, to losing what she thought was an expensive necklace, one can see how appearance versus reality lands Mathlide working her life away to pay for a fake piece of jewelry. Although Mathlide had little to nothing, she was a beautiful and charming lady. Just like any other girl, she dreamed of being wealthy and loved. When her husband came home with an invitation to the ball, she was utterly upset that she had nothing to wear to this lavish event. Despite being broke, her husband gave her the money he had saved for himself so that she could get the dress she had always dreamed of, yet Mathilde was still not satisfied. She explained to her husband that she needed jewelry, and not the faint flower that he had suggested, to fit in and match her dress. Mathlide decided to borrow a piece of jewelry from her friend Jeanne Forester. Jeanne allowed Mathlide to borrow a gorgeous diamond necklace to wear with her gown. She danced drunken and for once in her life felt successful. As the night grew into morning, Mathlide found her husband so that they could end the night and head to their room.
