Gunshots, car crashes, fighting and death. This is how a night of riding downtown and enjoying a night off of work starts and ends for John. It was a dark and cold December night just 4 days before Christmas Eve. John who is an off duty police officer is riding downtown on this cold night. As he comes to the intersection he hears loud gunshots in the distance. So John rides around to see if he can see what’s causing all of this commotion. After a few minutes he just thinks to himself that it was just some kids shooting guns. So he brushes it off and continues his ride. As he turns the corner he approaches a car that’s just recently crashed into a telephone pole. John jumps out of his car and rushes over to the car. He looks in the passenger window and sees a young …show more content…
and beautiful girl laying there with her head pressed against the steering wheel. He opens the door to check her pulse and she doesn’t have one. He immediately pulls her out of the car to start CPR. As he pulls her out he notices that she’s got some blood coming from the back of her head.
He thinks it’s just a scrape or scratch from the wreck. But as he gets a better look at it he sees that she’s got a gunshot wound. He lays her down to the ground and calls 911. The police and ambulance are there in no time. Once the ambulance come and take her away him and the other officers ride around to see if they see anything suspicious. The come to a dark alley and they see a group of guys fighting. John and the other officers pull over and go to see what is causing the ruckus. As they get to the group of guys John sees one of the guys trying to hide a gun and everyone looks surprised to see the group of officers. The officers ask what’s going on and one of the guys accidently says he just shot some girl. This is when John puts these two events together and realizes that the killer of that young girl is standing right in front of him. The guy with the gun pulls it out and shoots the guy that just told on him. The officers start yelling at the guy to put his gun down and try to tackle the guy with the gun. The guy then fires a shot at one of the officers but luckily misses. One of the officers pull out their gun and shoot the shooter. The shooter dies

At around 3:14 pm. Santa Rosa Police officer Erick Gelhaus and his partner, a trainee, were patrolling Moorland Avenue located just before the outskirts of Santa Rosa. Gelhaus who was sitting in the passenger side of the police vehicle, then spotted an individual (now known to be Andy Lopez) with his back facing towards them walking down the street holding what appeared to be an AK-47 assault rifle (Johnson). The trainee officer then stopped the vehicle just a mere 20 to 30 feet away, allowing for Gelhaus to quickly step out and order Lopez to drop the weapon (Chea). Many community members argue that the trainee officer should have gone out of the police vehicle with Gelhaus if Lopez was indeed a threat to the community. The trainee officer however did not exit the vehicle since “at that point Deputy Gelhaus had already engaged the subject, with the commands and with the weapon. The threat was essentially over” (Johnson). This explains why the trainee officer remained in the police vehicle during the confrontation.

A hit was put out on Taylor and Zavala by leaders of the Mexican drug cartel because they were becoming a nuisance. This hit was carried out by the same Latino gang members who had previously done a drive-by shooting of a rival gang. The officers were enticed towards their imminent deaths with a car chase which was set up by the Latino gang members. This chase led them towards an apartment complex which was rigged with many gang members and artillery to ensure that neither Taylor nor Zavala would survive. The two were ambushed but decided that gunning their way out was their best option. When the officers made it to an alley they were met by another Latino gang member who fired at Taylor and Zavala, hitting Taylor once in the chest before being shot and killed by Zavala. Zavala went to aid Taylor who appeared to be quickly dying and called out for help. Before police back up arrived the original Latino gang members found Zavala in the...

When we discovered John’s body the following morning after he had left my house I couldn’t bring myself to believe that he had gotten lost in the blizzard. I know this blizzard was a bad one, we haven’t had one like that for quiet a while, but still John knows this land better than anyone. I really started to think that there was more to his death than a directional mishap. Just the location and direction his body was found in was enough alone to lead it to be suspicious.

A big "celebration" dinner was planned for John's going away. All of his family and close friends came to enjoy good food and fellowship before leaving in the morning. His parents were to drive him to the airport where he would fly to the army base. The same base his father trained at many years ago. John's father was proud of his son, but also a little concerned, for he realized the seriousness of this war.
A various points throughout the night we came across other officers who were dealing with accidents and various other tasks. Unless there was a rush to respond to a call, Officer Crutchman would slow his cruiser down and check to see if his fellow officers required assistance. Furthermore, after assisting multiple officers from his unit in a potential trespass violation at a local school, instead of driving going about their separate ways the officers began swapping arrest stories and offering their opinions on the progression of the resulting criminal cases. Afterwards, between some hilarious joke telling, the talk moved to personal and professional concerns and issues; one officer had a badly fitting bullet-proof vest that was on loan. Officer Crutchman offered to give his extra armor to his fellow officer since they were around the same
