Guns are devices created to kill. Are they really necessary on college campuses? They are a danger to the students and the staff. They should be strictly forbidden because firearms are dangerous, students are most likely to suffer an accident and the security becomes less granted to those inside of a space dedicated to education. In addition, they are not safe, accidents happen and it might shoot off by accident. Someone can just get crazy and do terrible things. Society will be safer if we all got rid of those nasty devices, which have only caused, massive tragedies in the world. Guns are dangerous. They are supposed to be used for protection, but the reality has been repeatedly proven and there is always someone that is depressed, is having
Secondly, some people believe guns should not be allowed on campus because they may go off by accident. True, a gun may go off by accident, but according to, Students for Concealed Carry, out of 150 college campuses that allow concealed carry, there have been only three accidental discharges (Common). Two of them were by staff and one by a student. All three of the accidental discharges resulted in non-life-threatening discharges in which no one was injured (Common). All three incidents could have been prevented through proper training and practice, such as wearing a
College is seen as the beginning of young adult life, but campus crime can prevent the continuation of that life.Yet, campuses still prohibit students from carrying essential self defense weapons. This is most likely due to their ignorance of the benefits involved with allowing campus carry. Campus carry improves the overall environment of a college and promotes safety. Students should be allowed to carry guns on campus due to the current lack of protection offered through the university and an individual’s lawful right, despite the belief that it would cause an escalation in violent crime.
Guns are extremely powerful weapons. They can cause destruction, harm or even death. They can be used to defend and protect or to threaten and kill. Any way you look at it, guns are powerful tools, not only physically but socially. As college students it is important to stay abreast of the current events and issues circulating our country today, one of which is the controversial issue of gun control. It is extremely important to pay attention to where gun control laws are headed. The directions they take not only affect our nation and society but our future as well as we all move to communities and begin to raise families.
As you know some colleges have allowed students to carry guns on campus. But that can be a bad thing in a lot of ways. It could be dangerous. It could even kill people. So keep the guns off school campus because they can do more harm than good.
Allowing guns on college campus can create tension on the campus and possibly increase the rate of gun violence in schools.
Gun violence is a definite and serious problem in the United States. In 2015 it was proven to have taken more lives among the youth than car accidents. Guns pose as a threat to society because at any given time they can be used for destruction. Gun violence can be best represented in numerous school shootings that have happened in the past decade. Hundreds of innocent children have lost their lives because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. One never knows what people are capable of when they are upset, and adding a gun to the situation only makes it worse. This is why it is imperative that legislators fight to keep concealed guns off campus instead of promote them. Guns do not belong on campus because they take away from the positive
Before coming to college, I was in the process of considering a firearm to bring along with me to school. When I came to Bama Bound, I learned that firearms are not allowed on the school’s campus. Although we cannot have them, it is not hard to possess one and not be caught. If students had a firearm in their possession, they would be allowed to turn the weapon in while on campus. At any time, if that person was preparing to leave the campus, he or she could go at check out there. I thought about every possible thing that could go on throughout this campus if students could carry. Also, the method of having one to turn in the weapon and having access to check it out whenever could also be dangerous as well. On campus, a lot of alcohol is consumed legally and illegal, and firearms could possibly be misused in the hands of one under the influence. It would be argued that people come to campus with firearms and if students cannot protect themselves then they are endangered. Students are not fully trained to use firearms which would make them
...since they are far superior than a handgun due to their low recoil, accuracy, and ammunition capacity. If there were three armed robbers breaking into your house, would you choose to be armed with a handgun or rifle? Most crime is committed with handguns. Homicidal behavior is influenced by drugs, alcohol, socioeconomic factors, and mental state rather than the availability of a firearm. Criminals obtain guns illegally and will not follow gun control laws since they are criminals. Gun ownership does not increase aggression in a law-abiding citizen. The ability to open carry and conceal carry should be allowed with permits. Background checks should be a necessity. About half of U.S. households have at least one gun. Around 2.5 million times a year a crime victim uses a gun for self-defense (Kleck 1999: 275). Guns are used to protect oneself and they represent freedom.
Home is a place where you feel the most comfortable, especially if you have a firearm on hand. One should always be able to protect themselves from any threatening forces in their home and elsewhere. For students who live on college campuses in dorm rooms, that is their home away from home. Unfortunately, not all colleges allow students, faculty, and staff to carry a concealed handgun on campus. Concealed and carry is best defined as when a person is carrying a concealed firearm in public. When carrying a concealed handgun, you are protecting both yourself and others around you. In addition, the Constitution says you have the right to bear arms in the United States, which allows us to be more alert and careful when doing so. Not only will colleges
(According to the James G Martin center for Academic Renewal, in 2015-time magazine reported that there had been 23 shootings on college and university campuses. The 23 shootings on the list resulted in 21 deaths and injuries across all public and private colleges and universities in the country.) Most people do not feel safe around firearms; for students, it disturbs their peace of mind when they are trying to study and focus. People would love to go to an environment where it is free from guns. When student’s observer other students with weapon they are also questioning themselves the purpose of firearms in an academic environment.
Allowing students to carry guns while in the institution can lead to potentially harmful situation. Institutions are characterized by carrying of academic files and documents, giving the students the consent to have guns will make the colleges look like they are military camps and or police stations (LaPoint, 2009). It will seriously detract the institutions from the usual learning environment as it will bring an extra concern on the safety of the college community (Reaves, 2008).
How big of a role do guns play in the lives of most Americans? According to ProCon.org the United States has an average of 88.8 guns per 100 person. If you are looking from a gun stand point that is roughly 270,000,000 guns in total. ProCon.org goes on to also state that 22% of gun owners own one or more guns. If you ask me that is a pretty astounding number we have the most guns out of any other country in the world. If it was not for guns the United States would not have ever been created we still most likely be a British colony. Guns were also important enough to be the second amendment of the United States with the right to bear them.
Although guns have become a major part in our everyday lives, people die from it. We hear about the deaths on the TV but we brush it off because it's not us. We are so immune to the fact that guns are out there to kill us, to harm us. One gun can wipe out an entire generation in a blink of an eye. We go to reserches to find out if there is a cure for a new sickness but we don't handle guns on the street that kills more people than any other sickness out there combined. If there was stricter gun control in America, people with mental disabilities wouldn't be running around with guns. It's either gun control or no guns.
The debate of whether to own a gun or not is a rather interesting agreement. Guns are used for far more than just shooting a fellow human, they have uses in hunting as well as sport. But the overall concern is if the guns end up in the wrong hands, first I think we should ask ourselves why a gun is purchased. People have many reasons from personal protection to personal collecting. It is our second constitutional right to own and possess a firearm if cleared by the government, the safe keeping as well as good judgement is key into owning a gun correctly. While it is easier said than done due to unknown costs and risks. Guns should always be used as a last effort of an altercation and other alternatives should be thought of when deciding to
...ome have mace or taser, others even keep baseball bats in their cars. There are so many ways to protect one’s self from violence, but they are not all failsafe. Forbidding guns on campus is an unjust and senseless way to prevent campus violence due to the fact that only law abiding citizens abide by the law.
