A preliminary look at data available on firearms in New Brunswick shows that the province is not immune to issues involving firearms. Gun violence is present in our communities and the impact of exposure to gun violence may have negative short and long-term effects. In New Brunswick, guns are often used to intimidate others or to facilitate illegal activities such as drug trafficking. This report does not capture all problems relating to firearms, but moreover provides a summary of facts related to firearms in New Brunswick.

The problem for law enforcement is that when they deal with a gun report (any report), often they don't know if the firearm in question is real or a good reproduction. This not only poses a serious threat to law enforcement, but to community members as well. It also poses further challenges in the accurate reporting of the firearms problem in a given geographical area.
Crime associated to firearms is always a concern in New Brunswick. However, the lack of data available makes it difficult to measure the impact of illegal firearms in the province. While serious firearm data is reported to Statistics Canada through the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey, inconsistency or gaps are noted while assessing firearms data. The National Weapons Enforcement Support Team (NWEST) provides support, services and information to front‐line police officers who combat the illegal movement of firearms into and within Canada however, in the province of New Brunswick, there is currently no standardized policy among police forces to report firearms crime to NWEST. While their assistance on firearms occurrences is ongoing, this gap in data would certainly impact the assessment on illicit firearms trends and patterns in
