Firearm safety is a controversial topic in America attributable to the several accidents that involve firearms. The main cause of an accident or death when operating a firearm is a accidental discharge. Several safety procedures and courses may prevent this from happening. Firearm safety and the education behind it is important and necessary in decreasing the several accidents and deaths in America. Guns are not toys and everyone should have proper gun safety before handling or possessing a firearm.
There are several types of firearms, it is important to know the fundamentals on how a firearm operates. The first firearm was invented in China during the 13th century A.D., soon after the invention of black powder. Soon after a few years later

the muzzle loader was invented in the 18th century which revolutionized firearms. The shooter had to put black powder down the end of the barrel, which is called the muzzle. A round steel ball was used as the ammunition that may be cast by using a bullet mold. The muzzleloader had to be loaded in a specific order otherwise it would not fire properly.
Muzzleloader were slow to load, heavy, and did not shoot far and performed inefficiently in damp weather. The muzzleloader was greatly used during the American Civil War by both opposing belligerents. The world saw many changes from 1850-1900 in the development of firearms and ammunition muzzleloading was replaced by breech-loading firearms. The breech-loading firearms otherwise known as the modern firearm loaded completely different from the muzzleloader. The modern firearm barrel is loaded from the rear or the breech of the barrel this allows for quicker reloading. The modern ammunition is far more trustworthy than black powder, especially in damp weather conditions. Few things the modern firearm and the muzzle loader had in common was the way it fired the ignition, burning of gunpowder, which creates pressure, and the use of the barrel to propel the projectile. The modern fire uses cartridge ammunition that include a casing which are made from different types of metal such as steel, aluminum, brass, and nickel. The cartridge holds the gunpowder at the end mid section of the casing, a primer is also loaded at the end of the casing. When pulling the trigger the …show more content…
firing pin which is found in all firearms strikes the primer it, then ignites the gunpowder creating ferocious gas pressure. The bullet which is at the end of the casing propels due to gas pressure and travels at a great distance from the propellant. As soon as the bullet leaves the muzzle the high gas pressure exits the barrel, which creates a loud “bang”. Depending on the firearm different sizes of cartridges and the amount of gunpowder may make the bullet travel at great distance and at a quick speed. There is three main categories that classify a firearm a shotgun, hand gun, and a rifle. Each three types of firearms have a purpose and operate differently. Through out the years, firearm engineers have improved how a firearm operates by improvising. Safety programs can educate the importance of gun safety when firing and properly storing a firearm.
There are different types of safety classes a user can take before purchasing a firearm. Acquiring gun safety knowledge can give the user valid information on how to safely store and operate a firearm before actually making the final purchase. Some gun owners like to shoot their guns for hunting purposes, and others like to use their firearms for recreational usage. Whatever the reason, when using a firearm, there are steps users need to take to be safe while operating or storing a firearm. The first basic rule is to never assume the actual firearm is not loaded always check to make sure there is no ammunition in the gun. Even though the firearm is known to be unloaded it should always be treated as a loaded gun never point a firearm at people. When firing or handling a firearm always keep the muzzle in a safe direction away from any nearby bystanders. By doing so the user rules out any intentional or accidental discharge that may harm a living creature. Another great procedure a user may follow is to never have their finger on the trigger this can prevent an accidental discharge. When storing a firearm the firearm should be safely unloaded and locked in a location that is inaccessible to children. Safe storage of guns is associated with lower adolescent deaths due to suicides or unintentional injuries. Many safety procedures can be taught to a user with little or no safe gun
handling by taking a gun safety class. There are only one specific type of license a firearm user can obtain that provides them legally to conceal and carry a firearm on their person. The only reason a user should acquire this type of license is to protect themselves while out in public. Failing to safely use a firearm has caused a lot of accidents for years. People are starting to be more serious and strict on handling them properly. Statistics from 2011 for firearm-related injuries in the U.S. have decreased due to people attending more firearm safety classes. Over the last two decades, the number of unintentional injuries (excluding homicide and suicide) has dropped by fifty-eight percent. Firearm related fatalities have been decreasing since record-keeping began in 1903, and dramatically in the last twenty years. Unintentional firearm-related fatalities involving children fourteen years of age and under has decreased by twenty-eight percent in the last decade, and by seventy-eight percent over the last twenty years. In the past decade, fatalities in the home have dropped by thirty-three percent, and by fifty percent in the last twenty years. Statistics from 2011 also show that firearm safety programs have made them the least dangerous of unintentional fatalities and have shown them to have the largest decrease. Other unintentional accidents and what they have dropped to are fires, flames and smoke (2,800), motor vehicles (34,600), and even choking (4,600); while unintentional firearm fatalities are down to 600 as of 2011. Unintentional fatalities in the home, include poisonings at 49.8 percent, falls 28.9 percent, fire, flames, and smoke at 4.1 percent, choking 3.8 percent, mechanical suffocation 2.3 percent, drowning 1.7 percent, natural heat/cold 0.8 percent and firearms at 0.7 percent. Statistics continue to drop as more people get stricter with safety programs, and at home safety, causing less and less accidents. One way to dwindle accidents regarding firearms is to have gun control. Many advantages and drawbacks have been debated concerning gun control. Over the years, the federal government has made various laws restricting gun possession and use. Congress has reinforced the 1938 gun-control law that now denies a gun dealer from selling handguns to persons under the age of twenty-one. The gun-control also prohibits a gun dealer to sell a firearm to the mentally ill, convicted felons, and selling a rifle to persons under eighteen. (P.13) Gun control eliminates some factors relating to firearm violence and illegal possession which is the top priority for this law. Recent laws have become stricter with firearms this can be viewed as a good idea but, to any law there is a disadvantage. In the near future if firearms become heavily restricted, the only users will be the users who flaunt the law which are the very people who should not possess a firearm. Even if where possible to ban guns there are several hundred million firearms in private hands right now.(pg84) Peoples have discussed this decision thoroughly it may or may not reduce gun violence in America. One such example that banning guns could work is Great Britain who, after a severe massacre that occurred in 1996 decided to ban firearms. Great Britain banned all semiautomatic and handguns also encouraged their citizens to hand their weapons to the British government. Proper firearm education is the single most important tool that can be used to fight against gun control measures and to drastically bring down the incidence of accidental discharges while handling firearms. Firearms have been drastically improved to operate in many situations for the years that have gone by. Firearm safety can play a big role to keep firearms from being banned. Each firearm owner and operator are responsible to use their safety knowledge when handling a firearm. By doing so, any accident that deal with mishandling of a firearm will go down and users will be more comfortable operating one knowing they can safely handle a firearm.
One weapon used in the Civil War is a Sharps Carbine. It was developed primarily for Calvary, because of the shorter barrel. They were much easier to handle on horse back than their longer brother the Breech-Loader. Sharps were preferred because they could be loaded on a moving horse, something virtually impossible with a Muzzle-Loader. Also, Breech-Loaders carbine which fired moisture proof metallic cartridges, where more reliable than rifles that fired paper cartridges. As I said be fore it is easier to load a Sharps than a Muzzle-Loader. A Muzzle-Loader took 9 long hard steps just to fire one shot. Even the most skilled solder could only get three rounds off in a minute on the old Civil War Muzzle-Loader. And No wonder. After each shot you have to (1) steady the gun on the ground take out a new cartridge out of a belt pouch. (2) Tear open a piece of paper with your teeth. (3) Empty the powder in the barrel and insert a bullet in to the muzzle. (4) Draw the long “rummer” out of its carrying groove under the barrel. (5) ram the bullet all the way down. (6) Return the rod back to its groove. (7) Lift the weapon half-cocked the hammer. (8) Fully cock the hammer, aim, and finally,(9) fire.
Weapons have been around from the Neanderthals of the post-ice age, to the Taliban in Afghanistan. Rocks became knives, sticks became spears, and bayonets became AK-47’s. The technology from the French and Indian War was revolutionized and manufactured by the newly opened weaponry companies. Colt and Winchester had a new end of the market during the times of conflict in the United States.
Many Americans are now applying for a license to carry licensed concealed arms with them. The rate at which licenses are being approved is worrying. This development is concerning law enforcement authorities. Putting so many firearms at the disposal of the public is counterproductive to the gains that are being made on improving security and especially in the cities where incidences of gun crime and violence are on the rise.
As the generations of America’s youth continue to grow, so does the increase in violent crimes associated with each generation. Over the last decade, studies have shown that school shootings have increased by an astonishing 13%. Although this figure as a percentage does not seem like much, it makes one stop and think. Parents blame the video games and their violent behaviors for the influence on their children’s daily lives. Grandparents blame the child’s parents for not showing them the right way to grow up in the world. And then we have that child’s friends who say that this child just was not respected by their classmates, or perhaps even bullied into this violent nature. Regardless of the cause to this violent increase, many Americans do believe in a solution: gun control. Gun control is the situation in which the federal government would put a ban on owning firearms. Contrary to what many “hard-core” Americans believe, gun control would not necessarily ban them from owning hunting rifles or even personal handguns. It would simply limit the ownership of semi-automatic assault rifles, and other rifles of this nature. This does not contradict the Second Amendment of the Constitution which states that American citizens have the Right to Bear Arms. I believe in the constitutional Right to Bear Arms, and I am against any attempt to eradicate that right for any American citizen: however, I am for gun control in the sense of lowering the possession of semi-automatic and fully-automatic rifles.
Firearm safety is the important piece in reducing the deaths and firearm abuse, and it should be made mandatory in schools. The first step in making firearm safety mandatory in schools is to find programs that will teach it. Thankfully, there are many programs that will do it. The NRA, which stands for National Rifle Association, has a program that teaches gun safety (Eddie Eagle GunSafe). There is also a program called STAR, which stands for Straight Talk About Risks (Moore), that teaches gun safety.
The Repeating Rifle was used during the Civil War by 1863. These guns could fire more than one bullet before they needed to be reloaded. The most popular one was called the Spencer Carbine and it could shoot seven shots in 30 seconds. The Minie bullet was Claude-Etienne Minié created this bullet. This also used, and the new rifling or grooves in the musket’s barrel made these bullets spin and travel up to 900 feet. They increased the range and accuracy of the muskets these bullets did a lot more damage to bone. .(Judy,2012) (Falton, 2001).
Guns are not the trouble, people are. The United States is #1 in world gun ownership, and yet is only 28th in the world in gun murders per 100,000 people. The number of unintentional fatalities due to firearms declined by 58 percent between 1991 and 2011 Based on these facts, one can see the guns not the causes of gun violence. moreover, civilians who get permits take gun safety courses and have criminal background...
This was the self contained brass cartridge. It contained an ignition source called a primer, an amount of powder and a bullet. Early cartridge guns were converted percussion rifles. The first repeating rifles were the Henry and Spencer, the Henry had a fifteen shot internal magazine and the Spencer a seven round removable magazine this meant multiple could be carried. Repeaters were not limited to rifles though handguns such as the famous Colt Single Action Army were a common favorite among both civilians and military personnel. The industrial revolution boosted the firearms industry. It allowed gunsmiths who formerly would cut rifling and make parts by hand using saws and files to now use vertical mills and lathes to improve both output and precision. Barrels became easier to rifle and take to size using lathes and mills allowed sights to be manufactured much easier. The next major evolutionary step in the firearms industry was the bolt action rifle. A bolt action provides a tighter seal at the breach than other actions allowing higher pressure cartridges and a farther effective range do to increased velocity The first bolt action used by the U.S. military was the Krag-Jorgensen a Norwegian rifle with a internal side loading magazine. It was thought by many that the Krag was was an exceptional piece of equipment but during the Spanish - American War it was proved otherwise. Spaniards armed with German Mausers a rifle with a
Some of the deaths that were caused by gun violence was dealt to small children.Having a firearm in your home can cause a great risk if you have a child in your home because a firearm can be accessed by a child. In many situation the child is playing with firearm without adult supervision and end up either wounding themselves or end up dead. According to CNN “Guns kill Nearly 1,300 US children each year.”Also when a firearm is easily accessible a child will often grab a hold of it and it could be a possibility that they can take it to school there were some cases where a kid took a firearm to school and opened
Violence related to guns is a prominent issue in America. Guns are a means to an end; meaning guns have played a strong role in suicides, murders, and injuries. In the past decade there has been an average of 400-500 thousand incidents of firearms per year (Gun Violence). The number of injured people from firearm incidents in the United States per year for the past decade is 400-600 thousand people (Gun Violence). These statistics are absolutely shocking to anyone. The amount of violence and crime that comes from guns is enormous. It is imperative that proper gun control is put into place by means of background checks and proper training. It can almost be certain that the number of incidents of accidental discharges from children and the number of victims affected by gun crimes in general can be highly reduced.
The next real step in the evolution of the gun came during the Civil War. Rifles were invented that ...
As it is stated in the second paragraph, having guns can result in accidental shootings. There have been stories about children injuring themselves with a gun because it was loaded and was not properly kept hidden away by the family. Another example is that there would be an increase in emotional killings. Emotional killings is also another important reason why people should not own a firearm. There are many families that go through tough times and if they have in their possession a firearm there is a high chance it will be used harm
Gun safety is very important in the matters of teaching people that firearms are not a toy. One should always treat the gun like it is loaded. Too many people choose to play around with guns by swinging them around, tossing them to people, or aiming the gun at other people and pretending to shoot them. These are signs that people are much too immature and should not be handling a firearm.
The first small arms weapon to be developed was the hand cannon. A hand cannon is the oldest type of portable firearm, known as early as the thirteenth in China , as well as the simplest type of early firearm. Most examples of hand cannons require direct manual external ignition of the gunpowder through a hole without any form of firing mechanism. The hand cannon may be considered a predecessor to the modern handgun. The hand cannon was used in East Asia and Europe until it was replaced with the matchlock .
