Every time I see coverage of a shooting on the news, I get disgusted because it does not seem like we are doing anything about the shootings that happen every year. Many people commit senseless shootings and nothing is being done to prevent it from happening again. We hear about one shooting on the news, we talk about it for a while, we stop talking about it like its old news, and then another shooting happens again. I believe the United States does look like a violent society and we should have stricter gun control laws.

According to a 2013 survey, there are about 310 million guns in the country. America has more people owning firearms than any other country in the world. 79% of firearms that were used in mass shootings were legally purchased unfortunately. Sadly, 75% of people used semi automatic guns to kill people in incidents. Assault weapons were used in 40% of incidents. People should not be able to get their hands on assault rifles or semi automatic guns; America needs to change gun laws. According to a 2013 survey, many people who decide to take lives have shown signs of mental illness, but in only two cases was there a prior diagnosis. It needs to be required that people must have a background check done for gun sales between private individuals and licensed dealers. Some studies have found that reducing access to guns would result in less crime. John Lott who wrote More guns, Less crimes, completed a study in the 1990’s that said the right to carry firearms decreased homicides up until 1992. A recent study done says that there is no evidence that the right to carry guns reduces violence (Stray, 2013). In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, a 15-year-old boy was charge as an adult for homicide, carrying a firearm without a license, and illegal possession of a firearm.
