On Wednesday, February 15th, I was able to have the opportunity to listen to Andrew Lipman. Andrew Lipman is the author of The Saltwater Frontier: Indians and the Contest for the American Coast. In the novel, he explained the life of Native Americans living in New England and on the coast of Long Island. During this time, most individuals relied on trading natural resources. In order for profit for the resources, the colonists and Native Americans used wampum. Wampum was used as a sacred gift in Native American culture as a peace offering, funerals and marriages. Colonialists had an advantage towards using wampum. They used beads as a commodity for furs. Native Americans relied on canoes for transportation. Canoes can hold up to fifty people.

The Sun’s radiation heats the upper atmosphere, sending the energy toward the earth’s surface and finally mixes with the planet’s counter-rotational currents, creating jetstream flows. The Gulf stream is extremely swift and turbulent, and can sweep away any ship easily, without a trace. There is also amazingly unpredictable weather in the Caribbean-Atlantic, such as sudden thunderstorms and strong winds. The Bermuda Triangle also sits atop some of the most deep trenches in the world, extending downwards to over 19,000 feet, and combined with the swift current can create some of the most dangerous traveling paths in the world. According to Dave Feit, chief of the marine forecast branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Marine Prediction Center, "If you have the right atmospheric conditions, you could get quite unexpectedly high waves, [and] if wave heights are eight feet outside of the Gulf Stream, they could be two or even three times higher within it” (nationalgeographic.com). With the weather and geographic location of the Bermuda Triangle, comes natural human error. Not being qualified or experienced creates most of the deaths that occur in the Bermuda Triangle, due to tourists and thrill seekers. These people often try to sail or fly in the Bermuda Triangle without proper equipment, such as tiny wooden pleasure boats and insufficient plane engines, which are not good enough to tackle the strong winds and high waves in the triangle. These two peninsulas are separated by what is known as the straits of mackinaw which is what connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron together. This is how Michigan received its name. Michigan is derived from the word Ojibwa word Mishigamaa which translates to “Large Lake”. Michigan is known for its immense amount of lakes and water ways. It is said that where ever you are in Michigan, you are never more than 90 miles from one of the great lakes. Panama is near Columbia in Central America. Panama is probably most famous for the canal straight through its center. It’s also very famous for all of its beach since Panama is basically covered in water on all sides. Panama also has a very warm climate, do to how close it is to the equator. Which would make times at the beach even better. Panama would definitely be on my top 10 places to visit because of the beach, and warm climates.

Warm ocean water serves as the energy to power hurricanes and other tropical storms. The storms and hurricanes get fiercer with faster winds and denser rain when the upper layer of the ocean gets warm. Climate change causes storms to be more extreme because of the higher heat and added evaporation. Storms in the Atlantic have become even stronger over the past twenty years. The United States has also experienced more powerful one-day storms since the 1980’s that generate rain and snow at an unusual rate (**). With the weather getting warmer, it is expected that heavier snowstorms and rainstorms will happen more often, and that storms around the globe will keep getting stronger. Storms and hurricanes are hazards that can damage buildings, hurt crops, cause floods, and put people’s lives in danger.
