Achieving goals takes effort. It is more than just setting a goal and hoping that you can achieve it. Having a growth mindset is important in this situation. In the book “Mindset” it says ”People with a growth mindset, however, believe something very different. For them, even geniuses have to work hard for their achievements.” Think of any intelligent person that was successful, they had to work for it. People with a fixed mindset believe that everything should come naturally and without any effort. They could want something so badly but never put any effort into it or do anything about it. In the book “Mindset” It says ”In the growth mindset, it’s almost inconceivable to want something badly, to think you have a chance to achieve it, and then do nothing about it.” People with a growth mindset will put effort into things they want to achieve because they know that without trying, they aren’t going to get anywhere. It also says ”Without effort, you can always say, I could have been [fill in the blank]. But once you try, you can’t say that anymore.” If a person were to put effort into something instead of just saying that they could have done this, could have gotten this, or something similar, then they would actually achieve their goal. It was not until I read Carol S. Dweck’s “Brainology” that I realized I had a fixed mindset. I care more about getting a 4.0 than actually understanding what I am being taught and I also hate struggling. These habits are part of having a fixed mindset. It was after reading this article that I discovered I could change my mindset and be successful. Having a fixed mindset means that you believe that you and others only have a certain amount of intelligence. A growth mindset on the other hand, is believing that everyone has the ability to reach a higher level of intelligence through effort and hardwork.
“There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs,” was said by motivational speaker and American author Zig Ziglar. This relates to Carol S. Dweck’s article “Brainology” and Sherman Alexie’s essay “Superman and Me.” Ziglar, Dweck, and Alexie all feel that it isn’t easy for someone to become successful. It takes hard work, perseverance, and the want to learn and grow. In Dweck’s article, she stated that someone with a growth mindset would become more successful and knowledgeable than someone with a fixed mindset, which was demonstrated by Alexie in his essay, and by a personal experience of my own.

By contrast, students with a fixed mindset believe strongly in innate ability. Those get a failure, they would simply think they are not smart enough ,all their efforts has been wasted. People work hard in everything they do to be able to achieve this one goal. Someone with a growth mindset and someone with a fixed mindset tend to have a different perspective on how success works. One with a fixed mindset thinks that since they are already successful and that they have made it to the top that, they don’t need to do anything else. They believe that everything they did to get there is all the potential they have. Little did they know that they are only thinking short term.
According to what I learned from the class, a growth mindset is a kind of way of thinking that believes these difficulties and hardships in life are just another chances for us to develop ourselves. Unlike the fixed mindset, which is the other kind of category present by Carol Dweck and it always simply accepts failure as lack of abilities that naturally given, people who hold growth mindset do not buying it and their reactions to failures are always keep training and trying. By given a consideration that abilities can be developed after hard working, growth mindset can help us to build confidence and overcome difficulties and obstacles in our long river of life.

For example, I could change the way I approach a test if I really messed up on the last one, or I can stay motivated at every task at hand.
