Growing up I didn’t have it so well, but my mom made it seem like my life was just perfect. Little did she know, I knew how bad she was struggling to raise me and my sister. My parents tried their hardest to raise us and tried to make us happy in any little way. My mom would go out of her way on her last little bit of gas when she knew she didn’t have money, to get more gas. So I guess you can say the environment I grew up around was “low class”. The type of environment I grew up back then was called poor, but now people call it the “hood”. I used to live in Detroit, Michigan, Detroit is known as a struggling city. Well some of it was good and some of it was horrible, but I lived in the horrible part of it. Everyday when I was getting ready for school I heard some type of gun shot coming from my window, it got to the point that my mother didn’t even want me and my sister to be living in that house, but my mom didn’t have a good enough job to get us out of that terrible city. My mom decided to go back to school so she could get her Masters so she could better our future, but the only choice she had was to go at night time so that she could work and go to school. She had us living with our big cousin, D’Angela. We would come home on the weekends to spend time with our mother and then weekdays we would go back to our cousins house. Until one day somebody broke into our lovely home. When it happened it shocked me so hard that I did not want to leave my mother’s side at all. I slept in the bed with my mom until I was 14, which i guess is kinda bad. Some how my mother seemed to always stay brave during these situations and I was thinking, just how did she do it. I wasn’t poor but I wasn’t rich either, I was surrounded by an environment in which many people where in need of shelter and food because their families could not afford both. Just like poverty played a major role in my life, so did an ambitious and hardworking environment. Because those people I would see every day on the streets without food or a home, were the ones that had a bigger passion than anyone else, to one day be able to have a stable job and home for their family. It was the fall of 2010 and little did I know that my world was about to change drastically. We had moved back to Kenosha, Wisconsin in 2008 after living in Mexico, and I was starting to enjoy my life in the dairy state. My 6th Grade classes had just started at Bullen Middle School. It was right at this time when my world seemingly got flipped upside down. My parents had a family meeting and informed my siblings and me that we were moving to a small Iowa town called Orange City. I had feelings of nervousness, excitement, and sadness all mixed together.
Having a family of low socioeconomic status inevitably leaves me to reside in a low-income neighborhood which makes it more likely for me to witness the tragedies, adversities and hardships that people go through [not excluding myself]. Being conscious of this kind of environment, and these kinds of events, creates a pressure on me for having the aim to achieve social mobility in order to escape the aforementioned environment so that my own children could witness one less abominable aspect of life. Moreover, my family’s low socioeconomic status does not authorize me the privilege of being raised with the concerted cultivation method that kids of high socioeconomic status are more prone to being raised in. My family did not have the financial resources that granted us access to extra classes or lessons of instrumental classes, swimming practices, karate practices, or any other extracurricular activities that people of high socioeconomic status would be able to afford. This invisible fence that prevents me from these extracurricular activities enables me to having more appreciation towards the hobbies and talents that other people have. Plus, the fact that my family’s low socioeconomic status acts as a barrier from enjoying expensive luxuries in life creates a yearning [in me] to enjoy them later on in my life, in addition to acting as the fuel to my wish of achieving social mobility in anticipation of providing my own children with the luxurious vacations, gadgets, beachhouse, new cars that I could not

Because development happens this way, it can have many implications for teachers. There are multiple factors and processes that contribute to the variability of individual development of children, however, these differences can be overcome and teachers can give every child the support they need to achieve. Factors specific to the middle childhood years include vocabulary development, differing temperaments, development of attention, fine motor coordination, gross motor skills development and concrete operational development, including conservation, classification and seriation. Although they can create some disorder, these factors should not significantly hinder a child’s education, but teachers should adjust their lesson plans to accommodate all kinds of abilities, including physical abilities.
When I was young they used to ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and until six years ago I never knew. It took me exactly eleven years until I figured out the one thing I wanted to do with my life. The very first show I performed in was Guys and Dolls, and from then on my devotion to acting only grew. I feel as though the Early Middle College Program is a good opportunity to further myself in my future goal of a Master’s Degree in Musical Theatre, as well as saving money while doing so. Any people can become an activist. I always hear adults saying “You’re too young to be an activist” and all that other dumb stuff they say. Imagine if you’re best friend was shot at a school shooting. Would you not protest over your best friend being shot? This shows that you care for someone and want to CHANGE gun control or whatever happened that you are protesting. Protesting is when you don’t agree with what someone has done and you rally on the streets trying to change a law about what happened. My family is very close and nothing happens without everyone knowing about it. Most of my family members are hard working and value education. I learned that an education is important in today 's world and I need to out all of my energy into my education. My whole childhood I raised myself, surviving on the Social Security benefits I got from my father’s being deceased. The school supplies and materials I needed all came from monies I received from the government. I can’t even remember the last time my mother bought me something with her own money. Without gas money, she wouldn’t take me to school half the time, so I often walked at least an hour every day to get there and back. My mother often sent me to live with my grandma for weeks at a time while she partied. She would come home for a day, grab a bag full of clothes, and leave, with no word about when, if ever, she was coming back. I remember crying and shouting, “If you love me, you’ll stay.” I always got a hand shoving me back and a door slammed in my face.
I was born in Chicago, Illinois. I grew up on both the West and South sides of the city. I always lived in a house, but never had a room to myself.
