Even the people that were wealthier at the time still went through hardships and troubles. “Kids at that age didn’t know any other life than one in a depression” (Duwe). Children growing up during this time depending on their age didn’t know any other way of life. Some kids thought this is how it has always been and forever will be. “Many repeatedly went to school hungry, including the one-fifth of school children examined by the New York City Health Department in 1932 who showed signs of malnutrition” (Reef). Coming out of the depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt helped the U.S. citizens by enforcing The New Deal. “At the depression's worst in 1933, nearly thirteen million people were out of a job, representing about one-fourth of the workforce” (Campbell). Thirteen million families at this time had no income, which meant they had to watch how they spent their money, and when they used what they had. With businesses having to cut down on employees it caused businesses to shut down because they didn’t have the money to pay the remaining employees to work. “At worst, the loss of a job could throw a family into chaos, trigger desertion, and even prompt suicide” (Campbell). Around 30,000 thousand people began to commit suicide due to loss of jobs because they did not have the money for supplies to live. This event messed up and tore apart families more than any other tragedy. No one had ever experienced this so when the hard times hit everyone did not have any clue how to handle some of these
In the Roaring Twenties, people started buying household materials and stocks that they could not pay for in credit. Farmers, textile workers, and miners all got low wages. In 1929, the stock market crashed. All of these events started the Great Depression. During the beginning of the Great Depression, 9000 banks were closed, ending nine million savings accounts. This lead to the closing of eighty-six thousand businesses, a European depression, an overproduction of food, and a lowering of prices. It also led to more people going hungry, more homeless people, and much lower job wages. There was a 28% increase in the amount of homeless people from 1929 to 1933. And in the midst of the beginning of the Great Depression, President Hoover did nothing to improve the condition of the nation. In 1932, people decided that America needed a change. For the first time in twelve years, they elected a democratic president, President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Immediately he began to work on fixing the American economy. He closed all banks and began a series of laws called the New Laws. L...

The great depression was a very sad and hard time. This was a time where people had little money, no available jobs and just had a hard time with everything. Many people had nd any way to make money whether it was cutting kid’s hair in neighborhood, picking fruit, selling iron cords house to house or even painting a house for 5 dollars. Even though this was a very hard time some people still had hope that things would get better. This was a really bad time until Franklin Roosevelt who was for the government supporting the Americans and not the other way around became president.
The Great Depression was one of the greatest challenges that the United States faced during the twentieth century. It sidelined not only the economy of America, but also that of the entire world. The Depression was unlike anything that had been seen before. It was more prolonged and influential than any economic downturn in the history of the United States. The Depression struck fear in the government and the American people because it was so different.
The Great Depression, beginning in the last few months of 1929, impacted the vast majority of people nationwide and worldwide. With millions of Americans unemployed and many in danger of losing their homes, they could no longer support their families. Children, if they were lucky, wore torn up ragged clothing to school and those who were not lucky remained without clothes. The food supply was scarce, and bread was the most that families could afford. Households would receive very limited rations of food, or small amounts of money to buy food.
Some say that the great depression was caused partially by social democracy and planned economies. And although this could be true, it originally started from debts from World War I, and of course the stock market crashing in 1929.

The years berween 1929 and 1933 were trying years for people throughout the world. Inflation was often so high money became nearly worthless. America had lost the prosperity it had known during the 1920's. America was caught in a trap of a complete meltdown of economy, workers had no jobs simply because it cost too much to ship the abundance of goods being produced. This cycle was unbreakable, and produced what is nearly universally recognized as the greatest economic collapse of all times. These would be trying years for all, but not every American faced the same challenges and hardships. (Sliding 3)
Great Depression “No one can possibly have lived through the Great Depression without being scarred by it. No amount of experience since the depression can convince someone who has lived through it that the world is safe economically.” was once stated by Isaac Asimov. The Great Depression was one of the most horrific and troubling times in American history. Many homes were affected by this tragedy and many families were injured as a result of it. Man had the opportunity to prove himself by both continuing and struggling with his family leaving them.
The Great Depression was one of the most important historical events that has happened within the last century that impacted every Americans life one way or another. There were many factors that could be an explanation of why The Great Depression happened, but there is no one definitive list of the reasons of what caused The Great Depression. It was a mixture of events in the United States and outside of it that probably led to this period of time to happen. The main reason that everyone could agree on was the event of the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Because of The Crash, it made people go on a bank run which made thousands of banks to close because they simply did not have all the money for all the people wanting to withdraw their savings. Because everyone was trying to take their savings out, most people were turned down by the bank and essentially lost of their savings in the bank. The banks were failing and because they had no more money left, this stopped the banks from having available credit for people to use which made matters even worse for the people. This leads people to poverty and were left with nothing. Because people were poor and were scared of spending their money now, it made people stop buying extra things that weren't essential to live. This was the cause of the unemployment rates during this time period because if no one was buying anything, then there was no reason to keep extra workers for things people are not buying.
The Great Depression was in no way the only depression the country has ever seen, but it was one of the worst economic downfalls in the United States. As for North America and the United States, the Great Depression was the worst it had ever seen. The nation was growing up. Movies were starting to show more violence and sexuality. Women were coming out of their shell so to speak. They were starting to dress and act much differently than ever before. Women were now showing a side that was not ever seen before in film. Such stars of the 1930's Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and Bette Davis appeared self confident and sexy. Before this women were seen as housewives and not much more. Even outside of movies women were seeking much more independence. They were now looking for things other than the perfect man. They wanted jobs, but there just wasn't enough to go around.
Do you know what it’s like to live in a cardboard home, starve, and raise a family in poverty? Unfortunately, most Americans in the 1930s went through this on a day-to-day basis. In 1929 the stock market crashed. Many people lost their life savings; they invested everything they owned in a failing stock market. The country was falling, everyone needed strong leadership and help from the government.
