I thought that the theme of Growing Up by Gary Soto was to appreciate what you have. Maria's father said "When I was a kid, we didn't have money for vacations. I would have been happy to go with my father." It shows how her father is working hard to make Maria's life better. He is trying to make his whole family happy and make her childhood better than his. It shows later in the story, when Maria thinks that her family is dead. It shows her second thoughts to her
decisions.
In conclusion, the story describes that life changes, and nothing stays the same throughout it. It is in the hands of the people to decide that how they want their life to be. They can make it as beautiful as they want to and they can also make it worse than it has ever been
Bad things can happen to good people and your life can get better are some of the greatest themes of Esperanza Rising. For example, in the last sentence of the novel, Esperanza tells Isabel, ”Do not ever be afraid to start over.”(253) This quote was almost the same statement Abuelita told Esperanza while crocheting a blanket, but Esperanza never thought she would turn back to it, until Papa died and sure enough, Esperanza didn’t want to start over. She held on to everything from her magnificent, princess-like life, especially her doll. She didn’t know her life would never be the same again, but after living in California for a while, she looked back at what Abuelita told her and learned to let go of her past, even giving her favorite, special doll from Papa, to Isabel. Papa’s death broke Esperanza to pieces, but when she moved to California she took a turn for the better because she learned a lot of everyday skills, such as sweeping, cleaning clothes, and how to work which benefitted her and she embraced her life and enjoyed everyday.

“A Child Called it” is a phenomenal book. After reading Dave Pelzer’s story about the horrors he experienced as a child, I’m glad he had the courage to share his story. As a child, Dave’s alcoholic mother physically, emotionally, and mentally abused him. The author portrays to the reader just how bad his childhood really was by writing about the time his mother stabbed him, the times she would make it sit in a cold bath, the times she would put him in a “gas chamber”, and even about the time she purposefully burned him using the stove. Even though Dave experienced all this traumatic events early in life and had many risk factors that put him at risk for failure, his resiliency and his will to live is what saved him in the end.

Americans were incarcerated during this time for acts of violence. Police officers would brutally beat those in involvement with the movement if they refused to go along with the social norm of the society and so on. Others were perhaps jumped by white men when the blacks came off as being ‘disrespectful” to their way of living. The acts of Civil Rights continued until Jim Crow laws were uplifted.
Conceptions of truth and absolutes are difficult terrains to navigate, complicated by notions of relativity and perspective. In his autobiography “The Kid Stays in the Picture,” film producer Robert Evans writes, “There are three sides to every story: your side, my side, and the truth. And no one is lying.” The underlying presumption of statements such as this one may point to one possible reason for the allure of the unreliable narrator as a literary device. Such narrators provoke the discerning reader into questioning the very nature of the narrator and what might make one distinctly unreliable. Many first-person narrators are unreliable, particularly ones that are involved characters with narrative agency, insofar as they can transmit
In Gary Soto’s short story “Looking for Work” support, and happiness are the essentials to be a successful family. Those two points goes “hand in hand”, a lot of families in todays society gets ripped apart because they have lack of happiness and support. Happiness is nothing that comes over a day or two, it comes when we are surrounded with people that we love. Support and trust are also something that does not comes over a night, that is something that takes time to build. However, support does not mean that we need to support each other economically, we can support each other in many different ways, like be there for someone when they feel down.
During the Jim Crow era in the early twentieth century in the south, one major point was missing; equality. During this time the south was full of prejudice, discrimination, and racial hatred toward black people. Black people would be punished for only looking at a white person. Some of these punishments included being killed, beat, lynched, and arrested. All of these things revolved around the time period while Richard Wright was growing up. In Wrights autobiography Black Boy we learn that although he was born in such a rough time period, he is able to make his way to success. Wright was an independent and courageous boy. All throughout Black Boy we see the struggles he goes through and how tough life was for him as a child. Many of the tragic experiences Wright faces makes him the man he is at the end of the book. The main theme in this book is racism. Ever since Wright was a child he was only aware of two races, black and white. Not until a later age did he understand the difference of black and white people; this got him into a heap of trouble. A line in the book that stands out about his lack of knowledge of different races is "My grandmother who was as "white" as any "white" person, had never looked "white" to me." (Wright 31). This quote from the book shows that he sees people in his life to be white and that he isn’t aware of the difference of whites and blacks. It isn’t until later in the book that Wright is encountered with white folks. Black Boy shows a lot of racism. Wright as a young black boy tries to find his place in society throughout this book. There are several striking parallels throughout the book that can be vi...

Like Rose I was also placed into classes that didn 't help me out in any other way. Classes like ELL (English language learning) and some require course like art, and some repeat classes from middle school like us history. I like history, but I don 't like classes that teaches the same subject over again. I don 't dislike ELL, but feel like it limited student ability to be creative. Having to be taught boring diction and punctuation over and over again from one ELL class to another. The classes I was put in didn 't engaged me. up till high school where I could partially take any class I want, but still was forced into an art class for two school years. I decide to write about Mike Rose piece because I had similar experience in my education.
Along with each age group comes some worries. When you are in the childhood age group, things that seem big to you actually are not all that big. For example, when Dennis’ mom tells him he has to go to Margaret’s house while she goes to work all summer, he acts like it is the end of the world. In the adolescent age group things get a little more stressful. Some things that are stressful for the adolescents are keeping up their grades because school has gotten harder, getting a job, making the team, and things like that. With the adulthood and older adulthood age group comes the realization of necessities needed to just get by because it is the first time you are supporting yourself. As time goes on you ge...
It also shows how being outside of ones comfort zone can lead to valuable knowledge. Taking the children outside of their environment helped them realize the extent of economic inequality and social injustice they were facing. The anger felt from this knowledge, provoked Sylvia to want to work harder to achieve what others have. After gaining this knowledge, she could no longer be complacent with her situation and in her environment. She became determined to make positive changes so that she would never feel the way she felt in that toy store again. That was made evident in Sylvia’s last comment, “ain’t nobody gonna beat me at nuthin.”
About a boy is a novel which follows the lives of two people: Marcus and Will. Marcus is a strange kid who struggles with growing up, he is in need for acceptance outside of his own family, he is searching for his own identity, he is a victim of constant bullying and is suffering with his lack of parental care. Will is the complete opposite to Marcus. He is a 36 year old who is in his own extended childhood, he is searching for his identity not wanting to lose his youth, he ‘prides himself on his cool’ and simply can’t find a way to grow up. It is when these two opposing characters meet that they soon act as catalysts for each other. From their dependence on others they find independence for themselves within one another.
