Our group worked well together and every member of our group contributed valuable information and ideas that ended up making an impact on our prompt page. Furthermore, I thought it was very useful when we came together as a group to narrow the topic down and pick the top 8 sources. In addition, I found working in a group effective because there were so many ideas and writing skills that people brought to the table. I believe creating the prompt page would have been much more difficult if it was turned into a one-woman job.
Our group chose to study colonization. To narrow the search, we each studied certain aspects of the topic. I learned more about the glamorization of colonization and how it is portrayed incorrectly in television shows and movies. A numerous amount of sources that came up were articles about movies and restaurants that have made colonization romantic and almost desired. Although, it did help that I already had a rough idea of where my paper was going from the start due to my previous knowledge and experience with technology. In addition, the skills that I learned through writing this paper was organization and forming your own opinion. Organization is important for a paper to flow well and be easier to understand. As said before, a synthesis essay is supposed to be a conversation and not the writer reiterating what their sources has already said. In the end, I believe time management was vital to this paper because it required various steps in order to complete and do a good job, this assignment is not something than can be done last-minute. Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
Early European exploration and colonization resulted in a multitude of cultural interactions among the Europeans, Africans, and American Indians. These diverse cultures were brought together, exchanged, and compacted into different, newer cultures, that included all of their views.
The first class I will discuss is romantic embracement. The authors who fall into this category generally feel that there is a need for people to recapture and revitalize our past whether the past was positive or negative. A romanticist view usually tends to misguide or mislead people about what had really occurred. Romanticist writers tend to sugar-coat or emphasize all of the positive aspects of the past without telling us about all of the horrible events that might have occurred. An example of a romanticist is Senghor who wrote such stories as Negritude and Black Woman . Another term developed for romantic embracement was Negritude. This basically means the love of one’s African past. As I had mentioned in my opening statement, colonialism had a great effect on the African past. Some even believe that because of colonialism all of the African history was wiped out and replaced with European history. Negritude writers agreed with this and thought that it didn’t fully get rid of the history but it did sever it magnanimously. Another issue of romanticist writing is the image of Africa that is conveyed today. Chinweizu poses some very strong questions such as "Was our past one uninterrupted orgy of sensuality? One boring canvas of idyllic goodness, fraternity, and harmony? Were our ancestors a parade of plaster saints who never…struck a blow or hurt a fly, and who suffered all psychic and physical pain gladly and cheerfully, or never suffered at all?" The problem with romantic embrace writers is that they show readers a very byes view of history. By reading novels and novellas by Negritude writers we will never truly know the truth of African past.

The group couldn't seem to find time for us to meet and plan our presentation, the first and only time all group members were present to work on the presentation was on the morning of the presentation. We worked on it and at the time I believed we had agreed on our final product, I personally felt all the slides needed at this point was editing and final touches to make it visually appealing for the audience. I went online to the google presentation we were using as a group to prepare our presentation and was surprised to see a different layout, additional slides, and contents which were different from what we as a group had worked on and approved as the final work we were going to present. It is the result of group polarization where discussions are enhance or exaggerate the initial leanings of the group. Therefore, if a group leans towards risky situation at the beginning of the discussion on average they will move toward an even riskier position. (Marks, 2015). In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. (Bion 1961, p26) The group must have a common purpose or a goal in order to succeed. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
This turned out to be the positive group experience for me and other group members. The team was sufficiently strong from the very beginning through the development phase to the end without any incident of conflict and disagreement. Every group member is reliable and understands their roles working in a group. They also understand the significance of progressing collectively towards the shared and common goal. In other words, our group reflected the synergy by the association we held with each other as a team and, thus, reflecting an example of being a successful
In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Regarding my specific gains in competencies, I feel that I learned the most and was most likely to gain specific group facilitating competencies at the weekly class. Learning in group class is taught me the tools to use to work with groups therapy, communities and also with individuals through the process of changes. In this past three months I think a lot of opportunities have been created to shadowing with (beside and behind) and being a part of group members to learn. Throughout this group project, I had an opportunity to observe and reflect how my personality traits contributed to and hindered the success of the team. According to the Big Five Model, I identify myself as low on extroversion, moderate on neuroticism as well as openness and high on agreeableness and conscientiousness.
The nonfiction genre allows the reader and writer to learn about a topic they particularly enjoy or one that they know nothing about. I learned that the nonfiction genre can become an enjoyable, hands-on experience. Our classroom environment opened my eyes to various ways to have a writer make nonfiction writing their own. Writer’s have the ability to find a topic they want to learn more about and it gives them an outlet to teach others. Student are able to use prior knowledge to develop an idea about a certain topic and create a piece with factual information. I learned that factual information can easily sound like it comes straight out of a textbook, but after learning about the different ways it relates
In conclusion, I really did enjoy the this group project. We had great group chemistry, an interesting topic, an effective and consistent preparation period. That sounds like a formula to a successful group project to me. This is probably the most enjoyable group work experience for me at Augustana so far. If I could, I would do it
