Personal Reflections of “For the Health of It” This paper is my personal reflections of our group Image of Nursing Project. The stated purpose of the Image of Nursing Project is that it will: provide the student the opportunity to increase the visibility of the nurse and of the Hartnell College Nursing Program while imparting service, instruction, or advocacy to an identified population. (Hartnell NAH, 2018) Our group had already decided on a focus prior to them asking me to be a part of the project. I was thankful to be asked to be a part of the group as I was somewhat concerned about finding a group I would fit in with among students I didn’t know well. As it turned out we had mostly Explore, Examine, and Execute working styles with one …show more content…
We arrived in professional dress attire with our lab coat. On our 2 tables we placed informational handouts about healthy diet choices, flyers detailing Hartnell’s prerequisites, and a flyer containing an estimate of how much the cost of the nursing program would be. We also gave students an opportunity to touch and interact with equipment nurses use such as stethoscopes, penlights, and blood pressure cuffs as a way for students to see what tools Registered Nurses use and how they use them within their career. We also provided students with an SNA information sheet as well as information on the Nursing Mentorship program to encourage students to come to the meetings, ask questions, and see what Hartnell’s Nursing Program is about. In addition, we had 2 poster boards, one promoting our project as a whole and another visualizing how much sugar is in common drinks. We also provided informational flyers for the students to read at a later time or while waiting to talk directly to a group member. Nursing and Allied Health promotional items were given to students who filled out a short 5 question survey form as well as anyone who came to the table to request information. As the students only have a 30 minute lunch we also received permission to talk to 2 periods of the Health Careers class to promote Hartnell’s Nursing and Allied Health programs as well as share our experiences within the program. We split into 2 groups in order to share responsibility for discussion in the classroom. Each group member had a specific topic to discuss with my topic being support services available at Hartnell. I talked about the tutoring center, program specific counseling, financial aid help and the crisis counseling service. I measured my personal effectiveness in advancing the image of nursing by the response and questions the students asked
Presented issues such as lack of nursing opportunities for nursing graduates, lack of respect for the nursing profession and nurses being viewed as a threat by doctors continues to be of an existence today. As a nurse, I feel that it is of high importance to highlight these presented issues from the film not only because they were the most outstanding to me but because the nursing profession needs more
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experiencing in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. In this paper, I will address two of my learning needs and my goal for each. I will also discuss the plan I created in order to successfully meet my learning needs prior to becoming an RPN, and
I presume the role transition from academic nursing student to Graduate Nurse will be challenging and rewarding. In their findings, the researchers Doody, Tuohy & Deasy (2012) stated that for a successful transition NGNs need to be competent in a range of domains: interpersonal skills, managing workloads, providing health information, communication, and prioritising care delivery. Although I believe I am competent in the above specified areas, I am still not confident that I would get sufficient support in the hospital environment in terms of knowledge sharing, moral support and being given constructive feedback. Constructive criticism increases confidence in the work role and reduces stress in an individual (Doody, Tuohy & Deasy, 2012). In my previous professional placements I have been able to demonstrate my competency to work in the healthcare environment. I have received positive feedback from placement educators, buddy nurses and patients. Despite being competent in a range of the above areas NGNs may still face transition shock.
In-class discussions focused in on these various images of nursing and their damaging consequences. I have observed that I am not as assertive as I should be to dispute these negative images of nursing. I need to recognize when individuals make comments insinuating a negative portrayal of nurses. I will then proceed to educate these individuals on their uninformed views by demonstrating an understanding of my role as a nurse. This step will require knowledge and confidence; which I hope to acquire by the following strategies outlined in my knowledge confidence
As new nursing graduates begin the process of transitioning into the nursing practice. There are many challenges and issues associated throughout the transition. New graduates may embark on their journey through a graduate program or seek employment solo. The transition period may consist of challenges, that students will encounter during their journey. This essay will identify, discuss, and critically reflect on key nursing challenges that student nurses may face, throughout the process of the transition phase.
This is a research paper conducted on the very highly pursuited field of nursing. Nursing is a profession in the healthcare field that focuses or assisting others. Not to mention, nurses are heroes because of the many lives they save every day. This is an example that one doesn’t need tights or a cape to be a hero. Never the less, there are many reasons one may want to become nurse. Some of those reasons may be for personal gain or the greater good. However, before becoming a nurse one needs to be educated about educational requirements, licenses and certifications, projected salaries, and the projected job outlook for the next five – ten years for nursing. This research paper will provide thorough information on those four major aspects of
Nursing students at State University need better clinical experiences and better clinical sites. Clinical sites that have nothing to do or preceptors who don’t want to educate should be cut out and replaced with better sites. Ideally each clinical should allow nursing students to gain experience in critical skills and patient ca...
Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is barely two weeks old and already I am being enlightened and challenged to expand my experience of nursing. I will attempt to explain my personal journey and experience thus far including how and why I got here, my beliefs about nursing and related values, and my visions for the future.
Nursing has always been a key career in the health care system. Although it is not often focused on in media and stories surrounding health care, nursing is a career of great importance. If any patient was asked about their experience at a hospital or a care center, many will mention the capability and care that they received from the nurses. The health care system could not function efficiently, if at all, if nurses were not present to perform their part. Nurses are more than just physicians support staff. Of interest in this paper is why people choose to study nursing in university or college. From students just graduating high school to mature student who have prior degrees or education, nursing is a popular choice as a path to study
Image and profession go hand in hand. Image plays a very important yet controversial role in the nursing profession. The image of nursing is often inaccurate and falls short of the fair and correct portrayal of what the role of nursing truly is (Summers, 2010). With an inaccurate portrayal of what nursing really is comes the challenges of the profession. Popular stereotypes in nursing coming from both the past and today media and expectations take away the true meaning and role of the modern profession. Some common stereotypes include but are not limited to: unskilled, a way to marriage, and a physician’s helpmate. These stereotypes lead to many problems within the nursing profession including poor working conditions, insufficient support
Working with new graduate nurses has instilled in me the goal to share my knowledge and expertise with others and to teach others the art of nursing. My short-term goals are to complete the Master’s program by the summer of 2014. My second goal is to secure a job as a nurse educator at a hospital and work with my nurse manager to provide program like in-service to the hospital staff and students. I would like to incorporate my education from State University’s master’s program to assist hospital staff and patients in their learning process, with the use of new technology to facilitate the learning and understanding.
By understanding the values, goals of the nursing community, it gave me a better proficiency as to why my anatomy and chemistry classes strive for preparing us to being dedicated to what we do. Being able to understand how the communication between other medical co-workers and patients differ, has help me relate to the discussions we have had in class about using layman terms for patients, and learning various types of terminology that we are learning now and are going to have to use in the future. Understanding the concept of accuracy and need for conciseness in nursing, has also allowed me to relate to my anatomy class, as one mistake in terminology usage or diagnosis can harm the patient based on the medication or treatment they receive based on the misdiagnosis. Another advantage to the change in knowledge about how nurses communicate based on the concepts of communication, has allowed me to understand why my anatomy class is so rigorous and why the professor’s expect a lot out of the students. If we don’t have the knowledge of the lexis within our community, if we don’t provide accuracy and if we don’t understand the values of the community, not only does it create bad intercommunication within the field, but also reflect badly on the
There are many benefits to joining a professional organization and individuals become a member for a variety of reasons, but it is typically to advance or advocate for their career (Sullivan, 2001). Professional nursing organizations advocate for their members and nurses in general by providing a powerful influence and the support needed to meet changes in the world of healthcare (Matthews, 2012). According to Haley-Andrews, belonging to a professional nursing organization is important for nurses of all proficiencies. Membership can enhance the career of veteran nurses or play a critical part in creating a successful beginning for new graduate nurses (Haley-Andrews, 2001).
The ongoing education and training which supports the nursing as a profession must be maintained. The self-concept of nurses is enormously important in maintaining a professional identity.
The image of nursing plays a vital part in determining the history and future of nursing. It forms the framework of guidelines and protocols for promoting and improving the role of nurses in the modern world. Also, this paper stresses on the change in appreciation of their roles which have been damaged in the past years. The area of nursing has been facing various stereotypes from the public due to misconceptions created by the media. Therefore, the image of nursing is critical to nurses in general because it helps to evaluate them on the previous perceptions which are helping them to self-evaluate as a way of improving the quality of patient care. This paper outlines the issue of the image of nurses as a way of encouraging the performance
