Do you have what it takes to be successful? Passion and perseverance, zeal and determination? Do you have grit? As Angela Lee Duckworth, an American psychologist, says, “Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in and day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years; and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it’s a marathon, not a sprint.” From her extensive studies, one characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success. It wasn’t social intelligence, good looks, physical health, and or IQ: It was grit. To me, grit is a motivator. It keeps you going when times get tough, when mistakes are made, and when obstacles seem daunting. The idea and trait of grit can be connected to my life, the arts, and the world around me.
First, examples of grit can be frequently found in daily personal life. My brother,

Michael, demonstrates remarkable grit. He is a dedicated runner who takes time out of his life almost every day to run at least three miles, pushing and testing himself to see if he can go farther, sprint faster. In the long run, his goal is making the varsity cross country team. He has set his eyes on that goal ever since he first joined cross country as a freshman, and now, as a sophomore, he has improved by so much. Michael knew that working up to the varsity team would make time and effort, and he used grit to make sure that he got what he wanted. Even after he badly sprained his ankle at the first meet, he didn’t give up hope. He rested and healed for a week and a half and then got right back up and worked harder than ever to make up for the unwanted break. As you can see, Michael has persevered with passion, and in doing so, his goal is closer to being achieved than ever. Next, many characters in literary works commonly exhibit grit in numerous ways.
For example, in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, the main characters Harry, Ron, and Hermione show extraordinary grit when they search for Voldemort’s horcruxes. It took several years for them to find and destroy all seven of the heinous objects, but they knew that they needed to complete the task so they did. They persevered over many dangerous obstacles, and many mistakes and arguments, too. When the trio was hiding out in the woods, they were captured by Death Eaters and brought to the Malfoy Manor to call on Voldemort to finish the battle once, and for all. Harry, Ron, and Hermione could have given up then and let the struggle be over, but no. Together, they fought hard and managed to escape, eventually completing their ultimate goal of destroying Voldemort and saving the world from destruction and despair. In summary, Harry, Ron, and Hermione realized that failure was not a permanent condition, and are great examples of
grit. Finally, grit can be found in various people and movements all around the globe and throughout history. A great example of this is Albert Einstein. Today, he is known as one of the greatest physicists to ever live. However, when he was growing up and in school, none of his teachers believed in him or thought that he would amount to anything. They thought him to be mentally handicapped, as he was unable to speak easily by age nine. Einstein was expelled from secondary school at the age of sixteen, failed the entrance examination for the Federal Institute of Technology, and was unable to go on to obtain the usual university assistantship due to the opposition of one of his professors. He did not let those obstacles stop him though. He had a love and fascination of the laws of nature, and was passionate about his education. In all, Einstein had a purpose and was determined for his education to be completed. To conclude, grit is an important factor is success and life in general. The world would be empty and fervorless without it. Overall, grit in my life, the arts, and the world can be found in my brother, Michael, the fantasy series Harry Potter, and the physicist Albert Einstein. All of these people and things have the qualities and characteristics of success. Without passion to fuel motives, without drive, people would be ambitionless. Great, revolutionizing ideas can occur, but nothing would be done about it. Grit is the force that pushes people to greatness.
In this article Emily Hanford is taking information from Angela Duckworth’s findings on the research of ‘grit’. Hanford quotes Angela Duckworth definition of ‘grit’ as , “‘sticking with things over the very long term until you master them.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford also quotes Duckworth’s article to then explain that the, “‘ gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon; his or her advantage is stamina.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford is thus explaining that grit is like perseverance; that a person who works hard can achieve as much as a person who has intelligence. By explaining to students that achieving in school is not just intelligence but also grit as well, it can make students realize that if they persevere in their studies they can make achievements just as a person with more
exis Hanson Professor Dosch English 101 3 May 2016 title In “The Downside of ‘Grit’: What Really Happens When Kids Are Pushed to Be More Persistent?”, Alfie Kohn; an author and lecturer, claims that not everything is worthwhile especially when going at a task for an extensive amount of time. He asserts that ‘grit’ (the passion and determination when pursuing long term goals) is becoming less persuasive and credible. Kohn states that grit can cause serious issues that have real consequences.
Grit. An uncommon word that describes our work habits and traits. It is a hidden, yet an
Are you fearless, brave, and double tough? You might have what it takes to be “True Grit” but only if you can be compassionate and sensitive at the same time. The Marriam-Webster their definition is mental toughness and courage. In the book True Grit by Charles Portis, Mattie Ross is a four-teen year old girl who sets off to find and kill Tom Chaney for the murder and robbing of her father. She hires a Marshal Rooster Cogburn who agrees to find and kill him for a price of 50 dollars. Before they leave Mattie meets a man named LaBoeuf, a Texas Ranger set out on the mission of capturing Tom Chaney for the murder of the Senator and his dog. Mattie Ross doesn’t want his help, she knows that LaBoeuf will try to take him back to Texas and have him hung, but that’s not what she wants she wants him to be responsible for her father’s death and be killed on the spot or hung in her town. Rooster Cogburn is the definition of “True Grit” opposed to Tom Chaney the coward that kills an unarmed man and robs him. He lacks every trait that “Grit” is supposed to be. Mattie Ross is a coin toss of “True Grit” and not having “Grit” sometimes it seems as if she does have it bun then her four-teen year old side shows that she really is just a young girl.
The importance of self control and grit in life's success is interlinked with talent, the relatively new research delves into the influence of self-control and grit in childhood and adulthood life stages. Grit and self control measures in childhood and adulthood may both predict and explain the differing levels of success in individuals with similar talent. Grit and self control are influential to success, important in both childhood and adulthood, right throughout an individuals life. Grit and success should therefor be focused on as a skill to improve when pursuing a goal, both short and long
“Over time, grit is what separates fruitful lives from aimlessness.”-John Ortberg this is a great quote that shows how grit is necessary in being successful in life. Grit is key to getting want you want and achieving dreams.
There are many crucial elements college students must have in order to obtain success. The most valuable aspect of self-improvement for a college student to have starts with grit. Grit can be obtained through keeping one’s goals in mind, sticking to a schedule, and staying resilient to animosity. Grit is defined as using perseverance and passion for the goals one has. Someone with grit has courage, resolve and a strong character. Try to picture a person clenching their teeth while faced with a difficult tack, yet they conquer it anyway.
Duckworth and other studiers of grit have greatly exhorted that possessing grit makes a better academic success. “MacArthur 'Genius' Angela Duckworth Responds To A New Critique Of Grit,” Anya Kamenetz discusses assistant professor of psychology Marcus Crede’s assessment of grit. Duckworth believe’s "Cadets who scored a standard deviation higher than average on the Grit–Scale were 99% more likely to complete summer training," however Crede proves that this claim is barely of importance by comparing the gritty cadets to the cadets in general. Crede claim is effective because Duckworth only measured the student who are already academically fit. Another statement from Duckworth would be "One characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of
Just imagine undertaking an important mission without ever giving up. Aengus from the Song of Wandering Aengus undertook the mission to search and find his true love. In the Trials of Apollo, Apollo attempted to save the Oracles and stop the beast. Michael, Bryson, and Sarah's mission in the Eye of Minds, was to stop the evil Kaine from destroying and hacking the world. However, all three had lots of perseverance, after many failed attempts and challenges, they never gave up.
During the period of time, no matter how many times of the failure that they experienced. They still have a strong feeling of the success and achieved their goal before returned home with a great amount of money. After they went through a certain numbers of failures then they felt no shames (Rohrbough). Th...
Each of the characters in the movie “True Grit” displayed differing levels of self-esteem and self-efficacy throughout the course of the movie. The Texas Ranger, La Boeuf, displayed the highest self-esteem score, 9, out of the three main characters. This high self-esteem can be observed in the way he constantly talks about his status as a Texas Ranger and in how he was always sure that he would find Tom Chaney no matter how far he ran. His self-efficacy was rated at high 7 due to his persistence in chasing Tom Chaney and his belief in his own ability to shoot Ned Pepper at such a long distance toward the end of the movie.
Failure can cause a torrent of mixed emotions and thoughts. One can begin to doubt their motives for even attempting to succeed at a certain task. Some people may choose to give up after failure, but there are a select few who rise up to the occasion and move forward to try and succeed no matter how many tries it takes. By overcoming those difficult moments in life, it gives a person a sense of accomplishment and pride and that alone is a beautiful thing.
Zoe is a very great attentive student. She is a student whoholds a lot of valuable pronciples from her Haitian-Cuabn culture. The monment she enters the building she greets people with respect. She always says good morning and refers to all staff and her peers by their name. Zoe always comes to school in a positive attitude. I have yet to see her upset which allows me to believe she is good in toning her emotions or personal life outside of school grounds. Outside of school she is always busy between homework, family and tutoring at the SCO Family Services program in Downtown, Brooklyn. By the end of her long day she is exhausted but yet a smile is always on her face giving no sinces of anger or worries.if I was to describe Zoe’s emotional tone or color it would be lavender. She is calm, soothing to me around but ye keps firm.she had a bright future a head of her. Between the classes I have observed her in she is always energetic, cheerful and strong minded. She is excited in theatre class showing off her acting skills and in Spanish class she is attentive when doing her Spanish class work.
The quality of unimaginable success is determined by grit. Despite confronting difficult life circumstances that delay the process individuals who are passionate, intelligent, and dedicated to one’s own success will continue maintaining consistency throughout their journey. Success is measured by an individuals’ commitment to effectively work hard towards life-changing goals. In the journal article “Grit: Perseverance and Passion for Long-term Goals,” Angela L. Duckworth conducts several studies in order to convey human’s capacity for higher achievements while still enduring challenges and failure. Although Duckworth’s research has proven that individuals who are less gritty tend to shift trajectory, I believe working hard and keeping “stamina” is essentially the key to achieving your goals (1088).
He went home, locked himself in his room and cried. But now he owns six MBA champions, and 5 MBA MVPs; that moment of getting cut from his high school basketball team become nothing. Walt Disney was fired from his first job because people said he is lacked of imagination and had no original idea; this man is now the creator of the biggest company on producing cartoon and children entertainment, Disney. This man failed in business twice and was defeated in eight elections. With all of his effort and never giving up when things get hard he became the tenth president of the United States; this name named is Abraham Lincoln. Those people are examples of overcoming failure and become successful. They did not let the pain of failure stop them from being successful. They keep fighting and thrive for victory. Those are examples of failure is only help people to reach their goal sooner or later. What matter is how hard you try and how bad you want to be success.
