Recommended: Beowulf comparison to the monsters
Throughout beowulf there's 3 battles he comes across, with not just any old monsters but with Grendel, Grendel's mother and the dragon. He soon realizes that he has to use different methods, techniques, and weapons, and he even wins different “trophies” each time. But little did they know how beowulf is the epic hero and will destroy him.
Monster one The first monster that beowulf came across was Grendal. When beowulf first met Grendel he came out of a dark, deadly swamp. Beowulf already knew what Grendel's great achievement was “Grendel came, hoping to kill.’ ( Grendel line 287 pg 48) What Grendel failed to know was this was going to be his last human supper “Grendel to gnaw the broken bones of his last human supper.” (line 310

She so eagerly greeted grendel with her claws, she submerges her charmless claws in him. But what she didn't know is that her foul play was no fight for him. Beowulf had no use for weapons he used his bare hands “He tossed his sword aside, angry.” “if weapons were useless he’d use his hands, the strength in his fingers.” (page 53 line 504) Moments later he gazed at the wall and there hammered into the wall a sword blessed with magic. “then he saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy sword, hammered by giants, strong.” He broke the chains and grabbed the sword from the wall angrily lifting it high over his head and slammed down with what drive is left of him. He got her in the neck and sliced through it, breaking bones and all. She plummeted onto the floor laying there lifeless. Beowulf noticed that his sword started melting soaked with her blood. Quickly still filled with angry he took his final revenge against Grendel lifeless body, and decapitated Grendel's head. Beowulf left the lake of fire with his trophies the Grendel's head and the hilt of the giants jeweled …show more content…
They started wrestling each other on the floor, Beowulf grab his sword to only throw useless lashes against the dragons strong thick scale. The dragon grew angry she let a roar of fire out and there went Beowulf frighten men ran with terror. Wiglaf was the only one loyal enough to stay true to his oath to his king. Beowulf was now desperate and pulled his sword from his belt, with what energy he has left he struck the dragon one good time. He aimed at the dragons spiteful head, but the sword snaps and shatters. The dragon lands among Beowulf body and bites his ooze out his neck, Wiglaf rushes to Beowulf side. Wiglaf stabbed the dragon in the stomach, causing the dragon to lash out with flames of hell. Lifeless Beowulf grabs a knife out his belt and stabs into the dragon deeply into the dragon flank. Already to late Beowulf started to realize the dragons bit was venomous and he was dying. Beowulf sends Wiglaf to retreat the the dragon's treasure. When Wiglaf return Beowulf told him he must look after the Geats and to order the troops to build remembrance of him called “Beowulf’s
The passage that I analyzed spans the action when Beowulf returns to the halls of Heorot after a harsh battle with Grendel’s mother. He returns to king Hrothgar in the great hall of Heorot to say that he has successfully completed his boast and killed Grendel’s mother. Beowulf states that it has been a very difficult underwater battle and that he has barely escaped with his life, “The fight would have been ended straightway if God had not guarded me” (Donaldson, 29). Beowulf mentions this due to the fact that the sword given to him by Unferth, called Hrunting, was powerless against Grendel’s Mother. Hrunting is useless against Grendel’s mother due to the fact that she has the same charm upon her as Grendel did, which is that no normal sword can pierce her skin. Then, by chance, Beowulf finds an ancient sword on a wall during the battle and uses it against the monster. This sword, which was crafted by the giants, is able to pierce the monster's skin and after one swing, the monster was cut in half. After using this ancient sword to murder the monster, Beowulf watches the blade of the sword melt away due to the toxicity of the monster's blood, until only the hilt was left. A hilt is the handle of a weapon or tool. The hilt is decorated with runic symbols and was given to King Hrothgar of the Danes as proof of Beowulf’s exploits. The King is also given the severed head of Grendel as further reassurance that their troubles at the great hall of Heorot is over.
Beowulf wants to fight Grendel, a monster wreaking havoc, and is boasting that he is more powerful and courageous.
After fighting and winning many battles, Beowulf's life enters a new stage when he finally becomes king of his homeland, Geatland. Even in his old age, his code of honor still obligates him to fight against an evil, fiery dragon. For fifty years he has governed his kingdom well. While Beowulf is governing, the dragon "...kept watch over a hoard, a steep stone-barrow" (Norton 55). Under it lays a path concealed from the sight of men. Over centuries no one had disturbed the dragon’s kingdom until one day when a thief broke into the treasure, laid hand on a cup fretted with gold, which infuriated the dragon. "The fiery dragon had destroyed the people's stronghold, the land along the sea, the heart of the country" (Norton 57).
Meanwhile, the blade of Beowulf's new sword melts because the blood is too hot and poisonous for it. Beowulf does not take anything from the cave besides Grendel's head and the handle of the miraculous sword even though there are many great treasures around. He swims back to the shore and is heartily greeted by his fellow warriors. Grendel's head is car...
With all his great achievements, he becomes king of his homeland (Geatland). Even in his old age, he still has an obligation to fight against the evils of nature. Beowulf hears about a dragon who has become extremely upset because a thief stole a cup from a treasure which he had been guarding for several years. When Beowulf asks for volunteers to fight against the dragon, all but one of Beowulf's followers run into the forest in fear. The one who stays with Beowulf, is a young warrior named Wiglaf.
Beowulf is a hero that shows honor respect and courage. In lines 710-1007 is where the battle with Grendel happened. Thinking of the destruction that he will get, Grendel bursts into Heorot. Grendel tears the door from its hinges with his hands and quickly becomes a Geatish warrior while Beowulf carefully looks around. When Grendel reaches out to pick Beowulf up, he is surprised to find his arm gripped with a strength than he never knew could even happen. Confused and frightened Grendel doesn’t want to run back to the safety of the swamplands. He tries to escape, but Beowulf wrestles him down to the ground. The crash around the hall, making noise on the walls and smashing the mead-benches. Grendel begins to panic in pain and fear; the sound
In the battle with the dragon, Beowulf is struggling and Wiglaf is the only warrior who helps Beowulf to eventually defeat this beast. The proceeding excerpt is from Beowulf which shows Wiglaf encouraging Beowulf to fight with everything he has left and he will be by Beowulf’s side. “Beloved Beowulf, Summon your strength, remember the vow You made of old in the years of youth Not to allow your glory to lessen As long as you lived. With resolute heart, And dauntless daring, defend your life With all your force. I fight at your side! (1587-1595)” The proceeding quote signifies that Wiglaf will never give up on Beowulf and will always fight on his side. A major characteristic of Wiglaf in this epic is his loyalty to his king, Beowulf. He will never give up on Beowulf. Even when the ten other warriors leave, he stays to help assist Beowulf in taking down the dragon. He is extremely loyalty to Beowulf and will never leave his side even in the face of death. Wiglaf loyalty towards Beowulf helps him to the killing of the mighty dragon at the end of the
Then the Danes decide to go back to Herot and while they are sleeping, Grendel’s mother comes to attack them in order to even the score for the killing of her son. Then she leaves, taking the body parts of her son and Esher (which is one of Hrothgar's close friends) with her. Beowulf attempts to save him by entering the monster-filled lake, although the sword that he uses is useless against the skin of Grendel’s mother. As he continues to fight, he grows tired, but then notices that there is a huge sword on the wall of the battle hall where he was dragged to. The sword just so happened to be a magical one that was blessed by the giants that made it.
While engaging the Dragon in combat, Beowulf runs into complications with it and realizes that his sword can do no damage. Beowulf finds himself in defeat for the first time. However, Wiglaf, one of Beowulf’s kinsmen, comes to his aid and together with the combination of courage and strength delivers a deathblow to the Dragon. Although Beowulf is mortally wounded and is about to die, he passes the throne to Wiglaf and gives thanks to God for the treasure they receive from the Dragon’s hoard. This ends Beowulf’s third and final heroic battle in this case with the
Beowulf is called upon again to defeat this monster. Beowulf puts on his armour and takes the sword Hrunting and descends into the monster’s lair. Grendel’s mother quickly grabs Beowulf and takes him to the battle arena. Once there, Beowulf fights and finds his sword cannot pierce the monster’s hide. So once again, Beowulf throws his sword aside and fights hand-to-hand. Yet, he could not defeat her with his hands alone. Then Beowulf sees, “hanging on the wall, a heavy, Sword, hammered by giants, strong And blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons.” Taking the sword and holding it high above his head he strikes the monster in the neck cutting deep into the skin, breaking bones and all. Thus ending his second heroic battle with a mythical beast and proving that he is indeed worthy of praise. Yet, this is not the greatest of his deeds.
Towards the end of Beowulf’s epic hero cycle and life as king, he had to take on one last monster, the Dragon. He commuted back to Geatland with his men. As he begins to fight the Dragon, his sword failed him, and Beowulf was left with no weapons. Then ten of the eleven men he brought fled in fear and Beowulf was left with only Wiglaf. They took on the Dragon together and successfully killed him only after being badly wounded in the neck. Beowulf then collapsed and passed on. This finished his cycle as hero and as
Beowulf looked over on the wall next to them and saw a magnificent sword hanging on the wall adorned with beautiful carvings, it was blessed with magic. No normal man could ever have lifted that sword, but Beowulf was no normal being. He waited for the right moment to go and retrieve the sword, and when he found the perfect opportunity and he ran straight towards the wall. He pulled the sword down with great force and began running towards Grendel’s mother. Beowulf took in a deep breath as he leaned back and heaved the sword forward. Beowulf had sliced straight through Grendel’s mother’s scaly neck, blood began to pour everywhere and he heard her bones cracking as the sword passed through her.
Also, in the poem Wiglaf helps defeat the dragon. Beowulf begins to fight the dragon but gets hurt doing so. The dragon ends up burning him with his flames. The confident Beowulf pulls the dragons cuts and pulls its heart out. Although in the poem, Wiglaf kills the dragon with his drew sword.
He and a group of young soldiers journey to the end of the land where the dragon’s cave was carved out of the side. Beowulf tells the others to stay back, that he would handle it. But as the battle ensued, the dragon grabbed him by the throat, and Beowulf dropped his sword. Another warrior stepped into help, and stabbed the dragon to calm him down. Beowulf pulled out his dagger and finished the beast.
Beowulf’s first accomplishment as an epic hero was his battle with Grendel. Grendel was a huge beast, a descendent of Cain, who ruthlessly murdered innocent Danes because he felt pity for himself. Upon hearing of the Dane’s problem, Beowulf set off to help the Danish without having been called upon. Even though Beowulf had men backing him, He drew battle with Grendel alone and without armor or weapons. Yet, Beowulf emerged victorious with the arm of Grendel as his trophy. Beowulf then went on to kill Grendel’s vengeful mother and a huge fire-breathing dragon who thought it had been done wrong by the Geats. Alas, the killing of the dragon would be Beowulf’s last great battle for the dragon took Beowulf’s life in the struggle for his own.
