Grendel's Mother's Attack
In Beowulf, we see a number of elements throughout the poem. First, we see a pagan warrior society. In this society the relationship between a king and his thanes is key. It is a symbiotic relationship in which the thanes defend the king and his land and fight his wars. In return, the king provides for his men. He offers them such items as mailcoats, swords, helmets, gold rings, mead, beer, shelter and companionship. This society also places great value on kinship. If one's kin is killed, it is the remaining relative's duty to make the killer pay for the death, either with his own life or the payment of wergild (the "man price"). Finally, we see the recurrence of the pagan ideas of fate and courage. Men believe that fate controls their lives. Beowulf constantly tests fate and believes that through courage he can live on in the memory of those who will live after him.
In the section of the poem dealing with Grendel's Mother's attack, we see the warriors settling down to sleep in Heorot after the huge celebration of Beowulf's victory over Grendel. They seem unaware of the fact that Grendel has kin who may come to avenge his death. Grendel's mother appears on the scene, snatches a man away and hurries back to the mere. When it is discovered a man is dead, sorrow is renewed. There is no more joy at Heorot, now that the she-monster has sought "payment" for the death of her son. Yet since she and her son are monsters, the thanes feel little sympat...
In the length of the poem, Beowulf goes from abandoned child to gallant warrior to King. This transformation, expressed in the tone and content of the poem, shows the importance of the relationship between lord and thane and expresses the ultimate value of that connection. From the difference in battle scenes to Beowulf’s speeches, it is clear that he has gone from a somewhat self-loving hero to a selfless king. Within this change he also goes from serving a lord to becoming a lord, and in that way the poem shows us the importance of both sides of the relationship.
The tale of Beowulf is a tale of human nature, people still want the same things that they wanted thousands of years ago. Even if people switch out words now to make themselves sound less selfish, it is still there. Beowulf makes such an interesting topic to discuss because it covers the normalities in Anglo-Saxon culture, the ethics of gift-giving and how these customs have carried over into today’s world. It is relatable if one looks at it from a more personal point of
“Poor Grendel’s had an accident… so may you all.” i believe that this quote is a blessing because in the last quote it said “They watch on evil, incredibly stupid, watching my destruction” throughout the book grendel tried to convince the humans that they cannot defeat him because there is no god that will save them from grendel's destruction. Also he tries to convince the humans that his loss from beowulf was not a meant to be event. Basically this quote mean that grendel has had an accident and will die. Grendel is not wishing death upon them, he is wishing an accident which is better than death. Grendel's words are not meant to affect mankind infact they are meant to alert the people and give them a heads up. Grendel also speaks with the
Grendel's mother, unknown to the Danes or Geats, is plotting to avenge the death of her son. After the celebrations are over in Heorot and everybody is asleep, Grendel's mother appears out of her dwelling place, the swamp.
An interesting comparison to this quote and the one previously mentioned, “She had snatched their trophy, / Grendel’s bloodied arm […]”, is the mention of hands. This reference shows the readers that Grendel’s mother’s actions were truly out of revenge, as she could have killed anyone, but she specifically killed one of Hrothgar’s closest ‘friends’. At this point in the poem, Grendel’s mother has disrupted whatever sense of stability, peace and happiness the other characters are feeling: “Rest? What is rest? Sorrow has returned” (l. 1322). This quote truly highlights the impact of Grendel’s mother’s revenge on this poem. It is evident that the mood of this poem has completely changed after the attack and that the people of Heorot are no longer in the same state of mind as they were a couple of hours previously. This sudden withdrawal of happiness in the poem is emphasized through the repetition of the word “rest” in Hrothgar’s
An innocent, joyless, outcast lurks in the depths of the earth. He is feared by all due to his violent behavior and thirst for humans. Stories about this monster stretch across lands, intriguing the one and only Beowulf. In this notorious Epic, Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Grendel is the Frankenstein of this poem, the Joker of this time period, the Lord Voldemort of this book. Basically, Grendel is the villain and when there’s a villain there’s a hero. Our hero today is Beowulf, who challenges Grendel and he trounced not only Grendel but Grendel’s mother as well. Not only are Grendel and his mother villains but they also played the role of being the outcast/scapegoat. Symbolically they play the role

At the beginning of the novel, Amir and Baba do not get along. Amir sees Baba as “a force of nature,
Most of Amir’s problems stem from the relationship with his father. Amir does not intervene in the alley because he thought “Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay, to win Baba” (77). Instead, Amir worries about his status and what others think of him. Amir gains the respect of Baba through winning the kite running competition “ And right there was the single greatest moment of my twelve years of my life, seeing Baba on that roof, proud of me at last” (66). Amir does not want to jeopardize this feeling. It is another reason why he does not intervene. It is not until Baba and Amir are in America is that their relationship drastically improves. Amir is one step closer to coming full circle when he graduates high school. After a night of celebrating Baba expresses his joy of Amir graduating by “ pointing to the car in front of [them]. It was an old model Ford...” (133). Baba has an overwhelming amount of pride in Amir that he gives him car to get to and from college. Their relationship is so strong that Baba is over the moon to arrange a marriage for Amir with a girl named, Soraya. Baba asks the father, the General, if Amir can marry Soraya, and “ [The general accepts]” (163). Baba is so proud of Amir and his accomplishments in his life and with only months to live “ Baba [spends] $35,000, nearly the balance of his life savings, on the awroussi, the wedding ceremony.” (169). The symbol of
“The origins of the Santiago Carnival go back to the end of the seventeenth century when processions would wind their way through the city streets celebrating the feast day of Santiago, the Patron Saint of the city.” Cuba Absolutely. “Carnival de Santiago de Cuba.” July 21-29, 2014. The Spanish would celebrate ST. James in their own way and then allowed the African slaves to celebrate it, they added their music and dances to the tradition. People then began seeing this tradition as a way to celebrate “el pueblo.” This mixed is was created how carnivals are celebrated in modern Cuba today. The Carnival dates were extended to celebrate other saints during the months of June, July and August and of course to party more. Different cities around Cuba chose what days they will celebrate it, they usually last a week long. Carnivals are full of life, lights and music. People spend the whole year preparing for this day. Dancers have to practice their choreographies, and groups of people have to prepare for the parade, they prepare for the order in which the Carnival goes and the people participating. The carnival starts with children parades, that time is dedicated to all the children. Following that are the walks, people walk and dance to the rhythm of the music and drums. They also do a commemoration to the Cuban heroes. Then the carousels start making their way in, it is very creative, making it perfect! They have different theme carousels with people dancing to the congas and the music. Street vendors also prepare for this celebration, which is a day of great compensation for them. Most of them sell “bocadito” which is sold a lot during carnival days, it is a ripped pork sandwich, and Cuban pizza which is homemade and it’s delicious! The party does not end when the carousel show is over, most kiosk, restaurants and bars are open for the after
Nevertheless, some people insist that fast foods, such as chips, hamburgers and fizzy drinks, that are so cheap and tasty, are not a consequence of the health problems. However, I strongly disagree that fast food has no bad impact on people’s health. I believe that fast food has a negative impact on society and, therefore, people must take care of themselves and lead a healthy lifestyle if they do not want to face serious problems with their
Back in the ice age there were no trees to go climbing in there were not two by fours to go make a deer stand with heck there was barely any wood to start and fire to get warm so there was none of our hunting. Back then they were nomads they would follow the herds of animals and would kill them and follow they never settled down they never learned about animals being in season like we do they didn’t know that during the winter birds would be gone and that deer would be around and that turkey were hibernating. So they would be following the birds as they left and would be making sure that they followed them enough that they could get food they would follow mammoths and get fur and food off of them. Then they wouldn’t have to move for a while so you see that everything that they wanted they had to go get, but they did have some weapons that we have today like back then they had the spear and other weapons that or tools that they mad...
Sleep is very important for many reasons, but many people in the world suffer from sleep disorders. This allows very little sleep to happen, even for several days at a time. I know when I do not get enough sleep, I am always extremely tired, occasionally not being able to do day to day activities. Not getting enough sleep can affect how people perform on a daily basis, especially when it comes to driving a vehicle, doing school work, and even work. One of the most common and devastating sleep disorders in the world is Insomnia, to which people can go without sleep for days.
... people, because Carnival is the one time of year they get to go out and have fun - they are the heart and soul of carnival. Carnival and samba are their main passions alongside football - soccer. Favelas are often members of local samba schools. Because samba schools often represent social clubs and neighborhoods, working classes of the favelas are a common sight when watching samba schools perform in the parades (Rio 1).
Sleep disorders are conditions that effect the ability to sleep well on a regular basis. They can be caused by health problems or by too much stress. More than 75% of Americans are effected by sleep disorders between the ages of 20 to 59. Depending on the type of sleep disorder people may have a hard time falling asleep or may feel extremely tired throughout the day. In some cases, sleep disorders can be a sign of another medical or mental health condition, but can go away if treated. If sleep disorders are untreated they can have a heavy toll on the human body.
