A green roof or a living roof is a vegetated covering for a roof with growing medium and plants that take place of ballast, asphalt, shingles or tiles. This is new technology that is directed by the demand for environmentally sound solutions in the building industry. A green roof is a man-made version of a natural soil profile. When rain falls, some are absorbed by the plants some are contained in the substrate and the rest percolates through the filter membrane into the drainage layer. The green roof structure comprises of eight layers, these are: sturdy roof structure, reliable water-proofing membrane, ponding membrane, tough protection fabric, water storing drainage layer, non-clogging separation fabric, engineered soil and appropriate plants. …show more content…
Ideal green roof plants must be drought resistance and have shallow roots. Two plants that bear these qualities are sedum and native grasses. Also, the growing media should have a high field capacity or the ability to hold water. Vermiculite, sand, perlite and organic material are the main materials because of their light weight and highly water absorbent. Aesthetics are one of the benefits of this roof, apart from this green roofs have other advantages. During warm months living roofs help reduce thermal loading which in turn reduce energy costs. They also improve air quality as green roofs absorb pollutants. These roof also contribute to biodiversity by providing habitat for birds and insects. Green roofs reduce urban heat islands by cooling roof surfaces. Storm water is managed by reducing impermeable surface area and 65-100% of rain water is retained. Also, these type of roof increase the durability of a roof membranes by preventing extreme fluctuations in temperature and UV rays from hitting the membrane and lastly green roofs broaden green space in urban

LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a certification program for green buildings with stringent requirements for building energy efficient and environmentally responsible structures. Some requirements of this program include specific building materials, smart grid capable, gray water reclamation systems, green space minimums, high levels of insulation and low thermal transfer glass (US Green Building Council). Green buildings are a must if we are to sustain our current level of growth. Despite the higher initial cost of these buildings, the long term energy savings make these buildings a smarter choice for
California currently faces the ominous blessing of the El Nino weather system, which promises to bring desperately needed rains in the form of storms and torrential rains. In preparation for these rains, California also has to address the homeless population, who will be stranded in the rains if adequate shelters are not provided for them. In his article, Sunnyvale: Fast-tracked Emergency Homeless Shelter Set To Open, Eric Kurhi cites expert opinions, utilizes emotional appeal, and employs rhetorical devices such as diction in order to provide information on the new homeless shelter opening in Sunnyvale while discussing the overall problem of homelessness.

Standing at 500 Griswold Street in downtown Detroit, the Guardian Building is one of Detroit’s most extravagant historic landmarks. The Guardian Building opened in 1929 in the financial district; built for the Union Trust Company, after a two year long process of construction and design. Today, the Guardian Building is owned by Wayne County, becoming its official headquarters. I fully support my group’s choice of the Guardian Building representing who we are as Detroit because it is a standing embodiment of Detroit’s artistic and architectural advancements as well as the city’s rise and decline of success; giving it the ability to illustrate the perseverance that great cities possess.
The front porch of my house was dirty, covered with red mud and the pain was chipping off the floor. So I decided to give it a face lift. This process involved washing and removing the furniture. Scrubbing the chipped paint of the floor. Giving the front porch floor a coat of paint.
If you allow certain things to be given to the general people without having it approved first, then there is something wrong because when there is the approved writing or statement on certain things, it would mean that they are good to go and people can trust in it or their service. Just like the sarnafil and roofing contractor they would need to be approved and don’t think that they shouldn’t because working on a roof isn’t an easy task and it would require a lot of things like the right equipment and knowledge and experience that is why it would be better for it to be approved.
Most people know that rain gutters are designed to help keep excess water off the roof. However, what many do not realize is that when the gutter becomes filled with leaves and debris, it is not able to drain water properly away from the home as designed. For the homeowner, that means that their roof can become damaged and in need of repair due to water pooling up around valleys and vents. In addition, water leaks are more likely to occur when water is not properly drained from the roof’s surface. Homeowners who contact a Denver roofing professional can learn about the importance of their gutters, how to keep them in top condition and any other tips necessary for keeping gutters functioning in a specific climate.
The movie The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978) by John DeBello is defined as a musical-horror-black-comedy, but most importantly it is known as a cult film. The movie depicts a world in which tomatoes are killers. Due to attacks, the president must create a specialist team to take down the killer vegetable. The team, composed of a lieutenant who never abandons his parachute, an underwater expert, and a master of disguise, must try and fight the seemingly indestructible tomatoes across the world. However, in the end it is a screechy teen pop song, “Puberty Love”, that makes the tomatoes retreat and the town rejoice. The B level film, produced by John DeBello with less than a hundred thousand dollar budget, was released in the United States
A green building (also referred to as sustainable building or green construction) is a structure that employs an approach that is responsible for the environment besides being efficient in regard to resources all through its life cycle: This is from selecting the site to designing it, constructing, operating, maintaining, renovating and demolishing it. To achieve this, the client, the engineers, the architects and the entire design team closely cooperate at all stages of a project (Yan and Paliniotis, 2006). Practicing Green Building complements and expands the conventional building design areas of comfort, durability, utility and economy.
