Greek Religion Have you ever heard stories about that crazy guy that strikes people with lightning? That would be Zeus, king of the Greek Gods. The ancient Greek religion has a history with lots of stories and legends about gods with many traditions and practices that some would even call strange. In my paper though, I will be focusing on the origin, Gods, and afterlife of the ancient Greek religion. To begin with, the Greek religion has a very old history that dates far back. It is known to have been around since 3000 B.C., and started on an island in the Aegean Sea that belonged to the people of Crete (Robert). These people believed that all objects had spirits, and some of them had magical powers (Robert). Overtime, these objects developed …show more content…
I’ll start us off with the king, Zeus. Zeus is the one that controls the weather, and his most powerful weapon was the thunderbolt (Ancient). “The ancient Greeks believed that when lightning struck earth, it was a sign of Zeus being present (Ancient).” Next we have Hera, Zeus’s wife and the queen of the Gods. She was also the goddess of marriage and weddings (Ancient). After this, there is Athena. She is the God of wisdom, pot-making, and wool-working (Ancient). It is said that she invented the chariot (Ancient). Now we have Apollo, the God of the sun, truth, music, poetry, dance, and healing (Ancient). Next there is Demeter, the goddess of fertility and agriculture (Ancient). Zeus also had a brother named Poseidon, and he was the God of the sea (Ancient). After Poseidon, there is Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty (Ancient). The Gods had a messenger named Hermes, which is the god of travel (Ancient). Next is Artemis, the God of hunting (Ancient). The last three and Ares, the God of war, Hephaistos, the God of fire, and Dionysos, the God of high spirits. All of these Gods lived on Mount Olympus, except for Hephaistos because he was found as a threat to their home. This shows that all of the Gods had different personalities and
What ancient religion contains infidelity, incest, and life-time long punishments of which were almost, if not, are unbearable? Welcome to Greek Mythology! The Ancient Greeks envisioned higher powers, such as titans, gods and many other mystical wonders to account for every unexplainable thing they saw. As a result, a series of tales of betrayal, humiliation and entrancements sprouted from the imagination of the Ancient Greeks. The international bestseller, Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths, by Bernard Evslin, engages it’s readers, while telling the narratives of the Greek Gods.
In Ancient Greek Religion, Jon D. Mikalson aims to synthesis the elemental beliefs, the common practices, and the major deities worshiped by the Greeks. The book places an emphasis on religious life as experienced by Greek men and women. Mikalson provides a well-defined framework and focuses on key topics in nine thematic chapters: the epistemological basis and worship of Greek religion and sanctuaries; the nature of gods, heroes, and polytheism; cult myths; five major Greek cults; religion in the family and village; religion in the city-state; religion for the individual; the Hellenistic period; and the relation of Greek culture and religion. Alongside the text are ancient sources and a plethora of illustrations to help readers visualize religious life.
As stated above the Greek had twelve gods which they can go to accordingly when they are in need. Kithara who was the god of music and prophecy was one of the most important gods in Greece, the people of Greece go to him anytime they have questions about oracle. The Greek religion was most importantly about nature and honor which began in the bronze age from 3000B.C to 1050B.C. The Greeks and the Romans share one thing in common when it comes to sacrifice. “The religions of ancient Greece and Rome are extinct. The so-called divinities of Olympus have not a single worshiper among living men.” (Bullfinch pg1) The religions of ancient Greece and Rome are very old religions and are believed to in many ways have correlating deities. However, to begin understanding these similarities and differences we must first take a look at the family tree of the Greek gods and then of the family tree of the Roman gods and what all of these gods represent. The Greek gods were a large family with many gods and demigods. There were however a group of gods who were considered the major gods that lived on Olympus and met to decide the laws and fates of the entire world. Zeus, the god of the skies, was considered the king of the gods as well as men and was the father o...
Although, the Sumero-Akkadian Pantheon was made up of almost two thousand different gods and goddesses there were six major deities known throughout Mesopotamia. These gods were each the chief deities of main cities. However, with time their influence spread throughout other cities. Most of these gods represented the major elements of nature. Following are some examples: An, deity of Uruk, was the god of the sky, Nanna, deity of Ur, was the moon god, and Ea, deity of Eridu, was god of both water and wisdom. (33)
From the time of early Greece and Rome, around 2500-500 BC, humans have considered religion to be not only an explanation of how life was created, but also a guide on how to live life. Initially, religion in Greece was centered around the poetry of Homer and Hesiod. Gods were thought to be of great multiplicity and each had a distinct personality which reflected the society of man. Their essence lacked uniformity, as portrayed
Greek history began around 2000 BCE. The Greeks believed in many gods and goddesses. These gods and goddesses are known as the Olympians. Before the Olympians there were a group of elder gods known as the Titians. The Titians ruled the earth before the Olympians overthrew them. The ruler/king of the Titans was Cronus who was dethroned by his son Zeus. Most of the Titans fought with Cronus against Zeus and were punished by being banished to Tartarus. (Olympians. The Olympians) The Olympians are a group of 12 Greek gods. All the Olympians are related in some way. They are named after their place they live in, Mount Olympus. Mount Olympus is located up from the center of the earth. Here is where the major gods live and hold court. Mount Olympus is known to be an actual mountain or a region of the heavens. Each god and Goddesses have their own story on how they came to be and what they stand for. (Olympians. The Olympians)
The Olympian Religion of Ancient Greece was a religion that was based on fear, whereas the many mystery religions of Ancient Greece were based primarily on hope. The Olympian Religion was based on fear due to the instability and unpredictability of the gods and goddesses; it was believed that they could change their minds whenever they pleased. This left mortals scared and willing to do anything to avoid the wrath of the gods and goddesses. However, the mystery religions were based on hope and community, offering a sense of belonging due to their classless nature. The mystery religions also offered a belief of a better life after death which was appealing to many Greeks. In addition, there were many secret rites that offered mortals a way of communicating directly to the god of the mystery religion.
An important note of the differences in religions of the Greeks and Hebrews are their origins. The Hebrews, being monotheistic, praised a single spiritual god that is believed to be the creator and controller of all. In the book of Genesis, the Holy Scriptures of the Hebrews, god creates the universe, Earth, man and woman, and every living thing. “Cursed be the ground because of you … until you return to the ground- for from it you were taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”(Gen. 3, line 51) God spoke this to Adam and Eve after they ate from the tree of knowledge, which god had forbidden them from eating. The Hebrews believed that all of god’s intentions are good, yet every peril they experience is due to their own disobedience, for they now know the difference between good and bad. The Greeks on the other hand believed that many immortal physical gods walked the earth, each having a specific power or duty that usually explained a natural phenomenon. In comparison to the Torah, there is no written scripture on how the Greeks believed they came to be since stories of their gods were passed ...
As people look through history, certain things amaze and interest them. One thing I was amazed by was Greek mythology and what certain Gods were the Gods of. Most people know of the Gods named Zeus and Hades. Zeus, God of the sky and lightning and Hades the God of the underworld. In this essay I will be writing about the history of Zeus and Hades.
In ancient Greece, there were Greek Gods and Goddesses. The Gods and Goddesses consist of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Demeter, Aphrodite, Apollo, Artemis, Dionysus, Ares, Athena, Hermes, and Hephaestus. Each of these Gods and Goddesses had important roles. Zeus was the King of the Gods. He was the god of sky, thunder/light, law, order, and justice.
Greek mythology is the myths and legends the ancient Greeks centred their lives around. The ancient Greeks used it to explain the events and components of the world around them. Their religion included gods and heroes, creation stories, and the origins of their civilisations and rituals. It is topic that had been studied and examined in great depth for thousands of years. This fascinating religion's messages and influences are reflected in today’s modern society, and many similarities can be found between Greek mythology and modern religions, such as Christianity. This proposal will outline the research and project I hope to successfully complete.
Because of the under development of science, Ancient Greeks used mythologies and associated to the gods anything that they could not explain or understand, which also have revealed many aspects of their culture and society, including their views toward gods. Through the survived works of ancient Greeks, one can see that the concept of exchange plays a center role in the relationship between human beings and gods; and that the ancient Greeks had absolutely and undeniably respect for their gods, who are human-like and demand to be glorified.
